Chapter Six, entitled "The Prophecy of the God Ganga Dara." Chapter Six, entitled "The Prophecy of the God Ganga Dara." Volume Two. Thus have I heard. Once, the Blessed One (Sanskrit: Bhagavān, Romanized Sanskrit: Bhagavan, literal Chinese meaning: World Honored One) was dwelling in the bamboo grove of the Kalandaka bird in Rajagriha. At that time, in that country, there was a great minister who was very wealthy, but he had no son. At that time, on the bank of the Ganges River, there was a shrine of the god named Mani-bhadra (Sanskrit: Maṇibhadra, Romanized Sanskrit: Manibhadra, literal Chinese meaning: Jewel Virtue), and everyone bowed down to it and made offerings. That great minister also went to that shrine and prayed thus: "I have no son. I have heard that you, O god, possess immeasurable virtues, and that you can protect all beings and fulfill the wishes of others. Please protect me as well. If you grant me a son, I will cover your body with gold and silver, and I will anoint the shrine where you dwell with incense and ointment. If there is no sign, I will tear down your shrine and smear your body with filth and excrement." When the god heard this, he thought: "That minister is rich, powerful, and influential. A mere low-caste person cannot become his son. I am weak and cannot fulfill his wish. If I do not do as he wishes, I will surely suffer misfortune and insult." Therefore, the god who guarded the shrine prayed to Mani-bhadra, but Mani-bhadra did not have such power either. So he went to the son of Vaishravana (Sanskrit: Vaiśravaṇa, Romanized Sanskrit: Vaiśravaṇa, literal Chinese meaning: All-Hearing), and prayed to the son of Vaishravana. The son of Vaishravana also thought, "I cannot give him a son with my power alone." So the son of Vaishravana went to Indra (Sanskrit: Indra, Romanized Sanskrit: Indra, literal Chinese meaning: Powerful Lord) and prayed thus: "My minister, named Mani-bhadra, says to me: 'In Rajagriha (Sanskrit: Rājagṛha, Romanized Sanskrit: Rājagṛha, literal Chinese meaning: King's House) there is a minister who is asking me for a son. If I do as he wishes, he will make offerings and services. If I do not do as he wishes, he will tear down the shrine and insult it.' He has made such a vow. If it is not possible to avoid doing as he has vowed, please, O Indra, Lord of the Gods, grant him a son." Indra said: "This is very difficult, but now there is a way.

At the time when his life was about to end, there was a son of the gods who had lost his five merits. The gods said to him, "You are certain to die. After you die, be born as the son of that minister." The son of the gods said, "I have faith in renouncing and practicing the holy Dharma. If I am born into a noble and prominent family, it will be difficult to renounce. If I am born into an ordinary family, it will be easy." The lord of a hundred gods said again, "Son of the gods, be born there. If you have faith in renunciation, I will also help you." That son of the gods passed away there and was born in the womb of that minister's wife in his family. Later, when he was born, he gave birth to a good child who was handsome and pleasing to look at. They took him to a diviner to have his fortune told. The diviner also looked at him and asked, "Where did you first get this child?" They said, "We obtained him from the river god of such-and-such river." Therefore, they named the child "Gangdar." Later, when he grew up, he said to his parents, "Please allow me to renounce." His parents said to him, "We are so rich and powerful, possessing great wealth, and you are our only son. You must continue our lineage and support your parents, so we cannot allow you to renounce." That child was very unhappy because his wish was not fulfilled. He thought, "If I end this life and am born into an ordinary family, and then request to renounce, it might be easier." So he went outside and jumped off a high rock. He jumped off the rock and fell to the ground, but he was not injured or damaged. Then he went to the bank of a great river and jumped into the river, but the river floated him up and he came out happily. He ate potent poison, but the poison did not harm him or cause any damage. He thought again, "If I do something that violates the king's law, perhaps the king will kill me." So he thought that the king's consorts and maids came out of the palace to bathe in the pond in the garden. They took off their clothes and jewelry and put them on the tree. Gangdar saw them putting their clothes and jewelry on the tree and entered the garden, (and saw) the consorts.
