Both attained the fruit of enlightenment, bowed their heads at the feet of the Blessed One, and then returned to their heavenly abode. The next day, early in the morning, Ananda said to the Blessed One, "Last night there were two gods who came and attended to the Blessed One. The light of their bodies illuminated and beautified everything. What deeds did they do in the past to obtain such a result?" The Blessed One said to Ananda, "In the past, after the Buddha Kashyapa had passed into nirvana, when the Dharma was near destruction, two Brahmins took the eight precepts for one day and one night. One of them prayed to be born as a god. The other prayed to become a king, and then they returned home. When one of them returned home, his wife called him to eat, and he said, 'I have taken the precept of not eating after noon in the Buddhist religion, so I do not want to eat.' The wife said, 'You are a wanderer. If we have our own religious precepts, why do you take the precepts of another teacher? If you do not eat with me, I will tell the other wanderers what you have said, and they will not allow you to gather and talk with them, and they will drive you away.' When he heard this, he could not bear it, and in a panic, he ate with his wife at an inappropriate time. The two men each ended their lives as long as their life force allowed. The one who prayed to become a king was born into the lineage of kings because he kept the precepts.

Please grant me the ritual of the eight precepts for one day. If you do not give it, I will turn the king's land into the ocean.'" So the message was conveyed. Because at that time there were no Buddhas living in the world, the sacred Dharma had also disappeared, and the model of the eight precepts for one day could not be found. If this matter was not accomplished, he feared that disaster would come immediately, so he fell into contemplation and was unhappy. The king said to one of his ministers, "A dragon is asking me for the model of the eight precepts, and I cannot refuse to give it if I cannot find it." The minister replied, "If there is no Dharma in the world, where can I find it?" The king said to the minister, "If you cannot find it, I will kill you." The minister went home very unhappily. That minister had an old father. The father saw that his son used to speak with a smile and radiance, but now why is he speaking with a frown, unlike before? So he asked his son in detail what had happened. His father said, "There is a pillar in my house that always emits light. See what is inside it." So he instructed him.
