He obtained clairvoyance and individual perfect knowledge. He did not look to the gains, attachments, and honors of existence. He became a place where the gods with power and near power worshipped, remembered, and spoke respectfully. Then, the monks asked the Buddha, the Blessed One: "Venerable Aphyewo, what deeds did he do that, as a result of those deeds, he was born into a wealthy, rich, and prosperous family? What deeds did he do that, as a result of those deeds, he became Aphyewo? This one pleased the Blessed One and did not displease him. As soon as he generated the mind of renunciation, his inauspiciousness disappeared and became auspicious. Having renounced in the teachings of the Blessed One, he abandoned all defilements and directly realized the Arhat." The Blessed One said: "Monks, this one has done and accumulated deeds. Monks, in the past, in this very auspicious eon, when the lifespan of beings was twenty thousand years, the perfectly complete Buddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, the Gone to Bliss, the Knower of the World, the Tamer of Beings, the Unsurpassed, the Teacher of Gods and Humans, the Buddha, the Blessed One, named Light Protector, appeared in the world. At that time, in Varanasi, there was a layperson who was very learned, a speaker of Dharma endowed with wisdom and the fearlessness of liberation, who was honored, respected, revered, and offered to by all the laypeople. Then, when the perfectly complete Buddha Light Protector stayed and resided in Varanasi, the assembly of laypeople went to the perfectly complete Buddha Light Protector to listen to the Dharma. Then, after the perfectly complete Buddha Light Protector departed from that place, those laypeople listened to the Dharma from that layperson. Those assemblies of laypeople also gave five hundred karshapanas as offerings to that layperson. That layperson also offered those five hundred karshapanas to the Sangha. Then, later, that layperson, together with those groups of laypeople, went to the temple.

They went into the room. At that time, the Sangha of monks was performing a Vinaya ceremony, and the temple manager expelled all the lay practitioners outside the temple, saying, "Do not let you hear this." Then, those groups of lay practitioners said to that lay practitioner, "If we can be expelled by the monks, why would someone like you, who is learned, intelligent, confident in liberation, and skilled in Dharma, be expelled?" After saying this, their perception of him as wise disappeared. Then, that lay practitioner became angry because of this, and said to the monks, "I have done so much for you who sit on piles of dung, and yet you not only speak against me alone, but also degrade me in front of the assembly." Then, the monks thought, "This person's afflictions have become base and degenerate," and said to the lay practitioner, "Lay practitioner, you have spoken harsh words. Confess your fault! Otherwise, you will experience the unpleasant result of that karma." Then, that lay practitioner also felt great remorse, thinking, "I have spoken harsh words to such worthy objects of veneration. I have done wrong." So he confessed his fault, gave offerings, performed virtuous deeds, took refuge for life, kept the precepts, and at the time of death made the aspiration: "Alas, may the karma of speaking harsh words to such pure beings not befall me! If the result of this karma inevitably ripens upon me, then as soon as I generate the mind of renunciation, may my inauspiciousness disappear and become auspicious! By the merit of respecting the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, giving offerings, performing virtuous deeds, taking refuge for life, and keeping the precepts, may I be born rich, wealthy, and into a family with great possessions wherever I am born! May my name in the world be the auspiciousness of all the world!"

English

May it be fulfilled! May everything I think and desire be accomplished. Monks, what do you think? The person who was a layperson at that time was this beggar. Because he spoke harsh words to those monks, the ripening of that karma caused him to be born as a beggar for five hundred lifetimes. He gave alms and accumulated merit. In one lifetime, he took refuge and protected the precepts. At the time of death, he made aspirations. The ripening of that karma caused him to be born wherever he was born into a wealthy, rich, and prosperous family. He became the auspiciousness of all the world, because this person pleased me and did not displease me. As soon as he generated the mind of renunciation, there was no inauspiciousness, and auspiciousness arose. Then he became ordained in my teachings, abandoned all defilements, and directly realized the state of an Arhat. Verse 7, first part.
