圣者锡杖经。 圣者锡杖经。 圣者锡杖经。顶礼一切佛与菩萨。尔时，世尊告诸比丘：汝等应受持此锡杖。何以故？过去诸佛亦持此锡杖。未来诸佛亦持此锡杖。现在诸佛亦持此锡杖。我今现证菩提而持锡杖，如是过去、未来、现在诸佛亦教声闻受持锡杖。故今我现证圆满菩提，如诸佛之法，亦为汝等宣说。汝等亦应受持锡杖。何以故？锡杖者，亦名智慧之杖。亦名功德之杖。以能善显圣者之智慧故，名智慧之杖。以能成办功德之基故，名功德之杖。此锡杖乃是象征圣者种姓之大丈夫，趋向正法之路的胜幢，忆念之所依，是为具义之行，故汝等应如法受持。尔时，具寿大迦叶从座而起，整理衣衫，偏袒右肩，合掌，右膝着地，向世尊如是禀白：世尊，何故名锡杖？应如何受持？祈请世尊宣说。我等亦当如教奉行。世尊告迦叶：善听谛听，我当为汝宣说。锡杖者，是轻盈之义。凡依此杖者，能除烦恼，必能出离三界，故名轻盈。锡杖者，是能显现之义。持锡杖者

Then, the Bhagavan addressed the monks: "You should all hold this kharsil (begging staff). Why is that? Because the Buddhas of the past also carried this kharsil. The Buddhas of the future will also carry this kharsil. The Buddhas of the present also carry this kharsil. Just as I have now attained enlightenment and carry the kharsil, so too, the Buddhas of the past, future, and present teach the Shravakas to hold the kharsil. Therefore, now that I have attained perfect enlightenment, I am teaching you as the Buddhas have taught. You should also hold the kharsil. Why is that? The kharsil is also called the staff of wisdom. It is also called the staff of merit. Because it excellently reveals the wisdom of the noble ones, it is called the staff of wisdom. Because it accomplishes the basis of merit, it is called the staff of merit. This kharsil is a symbol of the noble person's lineage, a supreme man, a victory banner that turns towards the Dharma of the path, a reminder, and an action with meaning. Therefore, you should hold it according to the Dharma." Then, the venerable Maha-Kashyapa rose from his seat, arranged his robes, bared one shoulder, folded his palms, knelt on the ground with his right knee, and said to the Bhagavan: "Bhagavan, why is it called a kharsil? How should it be held? Please explain, Bhagavan. We will also act according to your teachings." The Bhagavan said to Kashyapa: "Listen well and keep it in mind, and I will explain it to you. It is considered to bring forth the light of wisdom, therefore it is called manifestation. The staff rattle is called non-retrogression, because whoever holds the staff rattle will surely be liberated from the three realms of existence, and will no longer cling to appearances, therefore it is called non-retrogression. The staff rattle is called comprehension, because who holds the staff rattle? Comprehending suffering, emptiness, the mixture of the three realms' afflictions, as well as the Four Noble Truths and the Twelve Links of Dependent Origination, because one can clearly comprehend these, it is called comprehension. The staff rattle is called removing pride, because whoever holds the staff rattle will completely abandon the actions of pride, therefore it is called removing pride. The staff rattle is called extending, because whoever holds this staff rattle will distance themselves from the five desires, therefore they will abandon the attachment to desire, the five aggregates will also dissipate, the five existences will also be completely abandoned, tending towards Nirvana, and will also distance themselves from the actions of fabrication, therefore it is called extending. The staff rattle is called obtaining, because whoever holds the staff rattle will obtain the precepts, samadhi, and wisdom treasures of the Buddhas, thereby attaining liberation, therefore it is called obtaining. The staff rattle is called complete accomplishment, because whoever holds the staff rattle will manifest the Dharma treasury of the Buddha, and by practicing according to the Dharma, will not decline, but will be perfected, therefore it is called manifest accomplishment. The Blessed One said: Light Protector, the meaning of the staff rattle is vast and numerous, it cannot be fully stated, but you should temporarily receive it as such. Light Protector said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, the meaning of the staff rattle is indeed so.

Those who completely hold this staff bell have sixteen aspects of conduct, such as: the four noble truths, namely suffering, origin, cessation, and path; the four immeasurables, namely loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity; the four meditations, namely the first meditation, the second meditation, the third meditation, and the fourth meditation; the four formless absorptions, namely the sphere of infinite space, the sphere of infinite consciousness, the sphere of nothingness, and the perfection of the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception. Furthermore, there are thirty-seven aspects of conduct, such as the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment being complete, and clearly distinguishing these dharmas, personally realizing them with one's own body, not following after sounds, delighting in these dharmas, gaining freedom to enter the gate of liberation of emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, and being without any joy, is called a noble one. Because of having such inner qualities, one holds the external staff bell.
