The Sutra of Nanda's Ordination The Sutra of Nanda's Ordination In Sanskrit: Nanapravrajya Sutra. In Tibetan: The Sutra of Nanda's Ordination. Homage to the All-Knowing One! Thus have I heard at one time, the Blessed One was dwelling in the Nyagrodha Grove in Kapilavastu. Then, in the morning, the Blessed One, having put on his robes and lower garments, and taking his bowl, went with the venerable Ananda, who followed him, to Kapilavastu for alms. Then the Blessed One went to the house of a noble son named Nanda. The noble son Nanda saw the Blessed One coming from afar. Having seen him, he quickly prepared a seat for the Blessed One and said: Blessed One, please come! It is good that the Blessed One has come! Blessed One, please be seated on the prepared seat! The Blessed One sat down. Then the noble son Nanda prostrated himself at the feet of the Blessed One and sat before the Blessed One. Then the Blessed One said to the noble son Nanda: Nanda, why do you not renounce? Nanda replied: Blessed One, what is the meaning of the word 'renunciation'? The Blessed One said: It is the complete abandonment of all sins. It is the complete elimination of desire, hatred, and delusion. It is the washing away of all the defilements covered by the darkness of fighting, quarreling, fault-finding, arguing, debating, deception, and hypocrisy. Like the ground for all crops, it is the basis of all virtues. It is the source of all jewels. It is the wish-fulfilling jewel of all happiness. It is the place of the rank of all virtues. It is the breath of all sentient beings. It is the trust of all beings. It is the giver of fearlessness to all living beings. It is the good vase of all poor sentient beings. It is the protector of those without refuge. It is the refuge of those who are impoverished by seeking everywhere and are afflicted by suffering. It is the unmixed quality of all Buddhas.

Yes. All sentient beings should make offerings to it. The wise should praise it. It is the path for those who go to liberation. It should be attended to by pure sentient beings. It should be relied upon by those who are vessels. It is what cuts off the gate of bad destinies. It is what opens the gate of higher realms and liberation. It is what completely fills the hosts of gods. It is what completely cuts off all suffering. It is what liberates those who are bound by the bonds of craving. Joyful one, this is called renunciation. It is the home of right view. It is the true vow of liberation. It is attending to nirvana. It is closely cutting off the continuum. It is the destroyer of afflictions. It is what removes subtle increases. It is what destroys the nets of bad views. It is what overthrows the banner of the maras. It is what raises up the speech of patience. It is what reverses the wheel of samsara. It is what turns the wheel of dharma. It is what dries up the ocean of milk. It is what destroys the mountain of bones. It is the end of birth, old age, sickness, and death. It is what lays down the burden of the aggregates. It is what pulls out those who are sinking in the mud of afflictions. It is what liberates those who are bound in the prison of home. It is what exhausts harmful feelings. It is what cuts off doubts and those whose stains of affliction have become firm. It is what gives respite from the fears of old age and death. It is what exhausts separation from what is pleasing. It is the shore of happiness and fearlessness for those who are tormented by the suffering of samsara. It is what transcends the desire realm. It is what truly transcends the form realm. It is what completely transcends the formless realm. It is what obtains the ultimate bliss of true nirvana. Joyful one, this is called renunciation. It is like the eye of all the world. It is the lamp in the darkness of ignorance. It is what purifies the continuum. It is what completely pacifies all diseases of affliction. It is what completely shows the path to those who have lost the path. All dharmas
