and without. Because they possess immeasurable wisdom and vision of liberation. Ananda, if this Jambudvipa, which is seven thousand yojanas in width and breadth, were filled with stream-enterers, once-returners, non-returners, arhats, and pratyekabuddhas, like a field of rice, a field of sesame, a grove of reeds, a grove of cattails, or a grove of sugar cane, and someone were to provide them with robes, alms, bedding, medicine for illness, and necessities as they wished for as long as they lived, and after they had all passed into complete nirvana, a stupa were made for them, and offerings were made with umbrellas, cymbals, banners, fragrances, incense, garlands, powders, and unguents. If someone were to place a relic of the Tathagata, as small as a mustard seed, in a stupa vase as small as an amla fruit after the Tathagata's complete nirvana, and erect a life-tree as small as a needle, and hang an umbrella as small as a juniper leaf, or make an image of the Tathagata as small as a span, Ananda, this merit is not even close to the previous merit by a hundredth part, a thousandth part, a hundred thousandth part, or by number, part, example, or cause. Why is that? Because the Tathagatas, Arhats, Perfectly Awakened Buddhas possess such immeasurable qualities as these, namely, they possess immeasurable morality, immeasurable samadhi, immeasurable wisdom, immeasurable liberation, and immeasurable wisdom and vision of liberation. Ananda, the Eastern Continent of Purvavideha, which is eight thousand yojanas in width and breadth, if it were also filled with stream-enterers, etc., up to the wisdom and vision of liberation, should be spoken of extensively as before. Ananda, the Western Continent of Aparagodaniya, which is nine thousand yojanas in width and breadth, if it were also filled with stream-enterers, etc., should also be elaborated as before. Ananda, the Northern Continent of Uttarakuru

It is said that even those who constantly enter the island waters, which are tens of thousands of yojanas wide, will be filled with water. As before, it should be elaborated in detail. Ananda, the lord of the gods, Indra, has a palace called "Victorious Palace," which has eighty-four thousand very stable pillars. All of those pillars are made of heavenly blue beryl. Ananda, the Victorious Palace is spread with golden sand and sprinkled with sandalwood water, covered with golden nets, and surrounded by golden bells. Ananda, if someone were to completely fill the three-thousand great-thousand world realm with such palaces and give them as alms to the monastic community of monks from the four directions, and if someone were to make offerings to the relics of the Tathagata after his complete nirvana, even if it were only the size of a mustard seed, as before, extensively. Ananda, the son of Embodied Light, King Ajatashatru of Magadha, killed his father, who had entered the lineage, and in order to make offerings to the relics of the Tathagata, he would pay homage to one-eighth of the relics. He will strive to regard it as supreme, as an image, as an offering, as a remembrance, and as a prayer. Because he did that virtuous deed praised by the Buddha, he went to the hell realm once, but because of that karma, that root of virtue, and that which he had previously practiced well, he will be liberated from there and will not fall back for twenty kalpas. He will shave his hair and beard, wear saffron robes, and properly go forth from home to homelessness, manifest self-awakening, and he will become a group called "Victorious Solitary Buddhas." Why is that? Because the Tathagatas, Arhats, Perfectly Awakened Buddhas, are endowed with immeasurable dharmas such as these, endowed with immeasurable morality, immeasurable samadhi, immeasurable wisdom, immeasurable liberation, and immeasurable wisdom and vision of liberation. Ananda, in this way, the Tathagatas, Arhats, Perfectly Awakened Buddhas, are endowed with immeasurable dharmas, therefore to them

The fully ripened result of offerings should also be understood as immeasurable in this way. When this Dharma discourse was spoken, this great earth shook in six ways: when the east was high, the west was low; when the west was high, the east was low; when the south was high, the north was low; when the north was high, the south was low; when the center was high, the edges were low; and when the edges were high, the center was low. Then, the venerable Ānanda said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, what is the name of this Dharma discourse? How should I hold it?" The Blessed One said: "Ānanda, therefore, hold this Dharma discourse as the Drum of Ambrosia. Also hold it as Great Sound." Then, the venerable Ānanda greatly praised what the Blessed One had said, rejoiced, prostrated at the feet of the Blessed One, circumambulated the Blessed One three times, and then departed from before the Blessed One. Thus concludes the Mahāyāna Sūtra entitled "The Noble Great Sound." Translated by the Indian Abbot Biśuddha Siṃha and the translator, the monk Gewa Pal. Revised and finalized by the Indian Abbot Vidyākara Siṃha and the revising translator, the monk Deva Candra. The Mahāyāna Sūtra entitled "The Noble Great Sound."
