The Noble Great Sound, Called the Great Vehicle Sutra. The Noble Great Sound, Called the Great Vehicle Sutra. In Sanskrit: Ārya Mahāraṇa Nāma Mahāyāna Sūtra. In Tibetan: The Noble Great Sound, Called the Great Vehicle Sutra. Homage to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Thus I have heard, at one time, the Blessed One was dwelling in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Garden, together with a large community of monks. Then, the Venerable Ananda, having dressed in the morning in his lower and upper robes, took his bowl and went to Shravasti for alms. While going for alms in Shravasti, the Venerable Ananda saw a large, multi-storied house, plastered and cleaned inside and out, with the doors well secured and the windows covered. Having seen it, he thought to himself: "Who would build such a large, multi-storied house and offer it to the monastic community of monks from the four directions? Or who would place a relic of the Tathagata, the size of a mustard seed, inside a stupa-shaped vase the size of an amalaka fruit, erect a life-tree the size of a needle, and hang an umbrella the size of a juniper leaf? Or who would make an image of the Tathagata the size of a span? Which of these two would accumulate the most merit?" Then, the Venerable Ananda, having returned from his alms round in Shravasti, ate his meal, put aside his bowl and robes after having finished eating, washed his feet, and went to the place where the Blessed One was. Having arrived, he bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One and sat down to one side. Having sat down to one side, the Venerable Ananda said to the Blessed One: "Venerable Sir, this morning I dressed in my lower and upper robes, took my bowl, and went to Shravasti for alms. Venerable Sir, while I was going for alms in Shravasti, I saw a large, multi-storied house, plastered and cleaned inside and out, with the doors well secured and the windows covered. Having seen it, I thought to myself: 'Who would build such a large, multi-storied house?'"

If someone builds such a storied house and gives it to the Sangha of monks from the four directions; and someone else places a mustard seed-sized relic of the Tathagata after his complete passing into nirvana inside a stupa's vase the size of an emblic myrobalan, erects a needle-sized life-tree, and hangs an umbrella the size of a juniper leaf; or makes an image of the Tathagata the size of a full measure. Which of these two do you think will increase merit the most? I report this matter to the Blessed One. After he made this request, the Blessed One spoke thus to the venerable Ananda: Ananda, well done! well done! Ananda, if you build such a storied house and give it to the Sangha of monks from the four directions; and someone else places a mustard seed-sized relic of the Tathagata after his complete passing into nirvana inside a stupa's vase the size of an emblic myrobalan, erects a needle-sized life-tree, and hangs an umbrella the size of a juniper leaf; or makes an image of the Tathagata the size of a full measure. Which of these two will increase merit the most? Your request is good, your courage is excellent, and your judgment is virtuous. Therefore, Ananda, listen well and keep it in mind, and I will tell you. Ananda, if someone builds such a storied house and gives it to the Sangha of monks from the four directions; and someone else places a mustard seed-sized relic of the Tathagata after his complete passing into nirvana inside a stupa's vase the size of an emblic myrobalan, erects a needle-sized life-tree, and hangs an umbrella the size of a juniper leaf; or makes an image of the Tathagata the size of a full measure. Ananda, the former merit does not even approach one part in a hundred of this merit. It does not approach one part in a thousand, one part in a hundred thousand, a number, a part, an example, or a cause. Why is that? Because the Tathagatas, Arhats, Perfectly Awakened Ones, possess such immeasurable qualities, namely immeasurable discipline, immeasurable concentration, immeasurable wisdom, and immeasurable liberation.
