The Great Vehicle Sutra Called 'The Question of the Noble Brahmin Woman Srimati' The Great Vehicle Sutra Called 'The Question of the Noble Brahmin Woman Srimati' In Sanskrit: Ārya Śrīmatī Brāṣpuṇī Paripṛcchā Nāma Mahāyāna Sūtra. (The Great Vehicle Sutra Called 'The Question of the Noble Brahmin Woman Srimati') Homage to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas! Thus have I heard. Once, the Bhagavan was dwelling in the Deer Park at Ṛṣipatana in Vārāṇasī, together with a great monastic community of about seven hundred monks, and a great many Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas. Then, the Bhagavan, having dressed in his robes and lower garments in the early morning, and carrying his alms bowl, set out for alms in the city of Vārāṇasī, together with the venerable Ānanda, the monk who followed him, and the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva Maitreya. Then, the Bhagavan, having gone for alms in the city of Vārāṇasī in due order, went to the house of the Brahmin woman Srimati, and having arrived there, remained in one place for alms. The Brahmin woman Srimati saw the Bhagavan, beautiful and inspiring faith, his senses calmed, his mind calmed, tamed and having reached the other shore of peace, having gone to the other shore of supreme peace, peaceful and tamed, guarded and without sin, his senses tamed, his complexion excellent, endowed with supreme splendor, like a sea, clear and bright and without turbidity, manifestly noble like a golden pillar, immovable, unshakeable, having attained, blazing with glory, radiant, distinct, clear, and she saw him from afar. Having seen him, she became delighted in her mind, and being delighted in her mind, she went to where the Bhagavan was, and having arrived, she paid homage to the feet of the Bhagavan and the feet of the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva Maitreya, and then, with her palms joined together, she bowed down before the Bhagavan and said this to the Bhagavan: "Bhagavan, you have come well! Bhagavan, you have come well! Bhagavan, please be seated on this prepared seat." After she had said this, the Bhagavan

And the Bodhisattvas Mahasattvas each resided in their respective places. Then, the Brahmin woman Shri Devi, knowing that the Bhagavan and the Bodhisattvas Mahasattvas were dwelling in comfort, approached the Bhagavan, folded her palms, and said to the Bhagavan: "Bhagavan, I have heard that the Bhagavan turned the wheel of Dharma in the Deer Park at Varanasi. Bhagavan, what kind of Dharma did the Bhagavan turn?" The Bhagavan said to the Brahmin woman Shri Devi: "Shri Devi, conditioned by ignorance are the formations; conditioned by the formations is consciousness; conditioned by consciousness are name and form; conditioned by name and form are the six sense bases; conditioned by the six sense bases is contact; conditioned by contact is feeling; conditioned by feeling is craving; conditioned by craving is grasping; conditioned by grasping is becoming; conditioned by becoming is birth; conditioned by birth are old age and death, and sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, and despair arise. Thus, this entire great mass of suffering arises. With the cessation of ignorance, formations cease; with the cessation of formations, consciousness ceases; with the cessation of consciousness, name and form cease; with the cessation of name and form, the six sense bases cease; with the cessation of the six sense bases, contact ceases; with the cessation of contact, feeling ceases; with the cessation of feeling, craving ceases; with the cessation of craving, grasping ceases; with the cessation of grasping, becoming ceases; with the cessation of becoming, birth ceases; with the cessation of birth, old age and death, and sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, and despair cease. Thus, this entire great mass of suffering ceases. Shri Devi, this wheel of Dharma, which cannot be turned in accordance with Dharma in the world by any ascetic, Brahmin, god, demon, Brahma, or anyone else, was turned by the Tathagata in the Deer Park at Varanasi."

O rto. After speaking thus, the Brahmin woman Endowed with Glory said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, is ignorance within or without? The Blessed One replied: Endowed with Glory, it is not so. She said: Blessed One, if ignorance is neither within nor without, how can this non-existent ignorance become the cause of actions? Blessed One, is there any dharma in the next world? He replied: Endowed with Glory, it is not so. She said: Blessed One, is there a form of ignorance? The Blessed One replied: Endowed with Glory, there is not. Endowed with Glory, ignorance arises in the form of what is not true, but does not arise in the form of what is true. Endowed with Glory, ignorance arises in the form of what is inverted, but does not arise in the form of what is not inverted. She said: Blessed One, if there is no ignorance, from what do actions arise? And from what does suffering arise? Blessed One, for example, if there is no root of a banyan tree, how can its branches, leaves, and twigs appear? Blessed One, similarly, if ignorance has not arisen and does not exist, how can ignorance be known to be the cause of actions? The Blessed One replied: It is so. Endowed with Glory, since all dharmas are empty by their own nature of emptiness, ignorant ordinary people who are without learning, without knowledge, and without understanding manifestly perform actions. Because actions exist, existence is manifestly accomplished. Because existence exists, suffering is exhausted by being experienced. In this, there is no one who manifestly performs actions, and there is no one who manifestly accomplishes existence. This is the ultimate truth of dharmas. Endowed with Glory, however, thinking about how sentient beings will realize the ultimate truth, the Tathagatas, Arhats, and Perfectly Awakened Buddhas teach the Dharma to sentient beings by adopting conventional terms. Endowed with Glory, conventional terms are not true. Why? Because there is no one who comprehends them, and there is no one who knows them. Endowed with Glory, for example, the emanation of the Tathagata.
