Thirteenth, The Chapter on Defining Samadhi. Thirteenth, The Chapter on Defining Samadhi. Then, the Blessed One addressed the youth Moonbeam, saying: Therefore, youth, if a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva wishes to attain unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, they should be skilled in defining Samadhi. Youth, what is the definition of Samadhi? It is the suchness and equality of all dharmas, without inequality, without discrimination, without differentiation, without fabrication, without arising, without ceasing, with all conceptualization, differentiation, and total conceptualization completely severed, with no object of mind, without attention, with all discriminating consciousness completely severed, with all attachment, hatred, and delusion completely severed, without limit, free from marginal attention, with attention completely severed, knowing the self-nature of the aggregates, elements, and sense bases, becoming the place of mindfulness, wisdom, realization, shame, stability, ritual, field of activity, and diligence, the place without afflictions, the place of peace, with all elaboration completely severed, the training of all Bodhisattvas, the conduct of all Tathagatas, field of activity, with all qualities completely perfected, this is called the definition of Samadhi, youth. A Bodhisattva-Mahasattva abiding in this definition of Samadhi is inseparable from Samadhi, their mind is without confusion, they possess great compassion, and they accomplish the benefit of immeasurable beings. Then, at that time, the Blessed One spoke these verses: Samadhi is the ground of unequaledness, extremely difficult to see, subtle and peaceful, destroying all perceptions, therefore it is called Samadhi. Without conception and without differentiation, without grasping and without showing, the mind also has no object, therefore it is called Samadhi. When one attains equality, in all dharmas there is no pride, the nature of no pride as it is, this is proclaimed as Samadhi. Dharma has not even a speck of dust, the name of dust is also nonexistent, Dharma

Phenomena are without object, therefore it is called samadhi. The mind's lack of object is also called discrimination. If this dharma is not discriminated, thus know samadhi. Sounds well indicate all meanings, but the sound itself has no substance. Sound is like an echo in the mountains, like the sky in the void. These dharmas do not abide, and no place is contemplated for them. The non-abiding is not found in its own nature by the name of place. Those who speak of going, dying, and transferring, such going does not exist. The absence of going, by the name of going, is therefore said to be samadhi. Not being in equilibrium is called arrogance. This equilibrium is also the second kind of arrogance. Without arrogance, gradually practice bodhi. Mindfulness without arrogance is supreme bodhi. Equality and inequality, peace is the Buddha-land. Stillness and insight, the signless is this. If this peaceful Buddha-land is cultivated, then one is diligent in this peaceful samadhi. When the aspect of meaning enters into consciousness, letters and the like cannot cause it to enter. Having abandoned all sounds and melodies, one becomes equally abiding, and there is no arrogance in that. Whatever bodhisattvas abide and diligently practice this samadhi as it has been taught, even if this realm is consumed by the fire of an eon, it will not be burned by the fire by entering into the king of mountains. Even if it is burned for many hundreds of thousands of eons, the sky has never been burned before. Thus, knowing that all dharmas are equal to the sky, one will not be burned by fire. Even if the Buddha-lands ignite, and one prays that these ignitions may be completely pacified, abiding in samadhi and making this prayer, even if the lands are destroyed, there will be no change in that. The power of one's miraculous abilities also becomes limitless. One also goes unimpeded in the sky. Abiding in samadhi as taught, bodhisattvas experience these qualities. Birth, death, and transfer, even if they change, there is no birth, no death, and no transfer. Whoever thus truly knows, it is not difficult for them to obtain samadhi. Without death, transfer, and birth, the protector of the world has thus spoken well. Thus knowing the protector of the world, therefore also know samadhi. Not being defiled by the world, worldly dharmas.
