Then, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Maitreya at that time spoke these verses: After the Great Hero has passed away, whoever hears such a sutra, and having heard it, rejoices, how much merit will that be? In order to fully enjoy the delight of amusement, give to each sentient being enough to fill the entire Jambudvipa (Southern Continent), including conches, gold, silver, jewels, pearls, vaidurya, conch shells, coral, agate, horse-drawn chariots, ox-drawn chariots, elephant-drawn chariots, multi-storied houses, and houses. On the ground, Bodhisattva Mahasattva Maitreya entreated, saying: "Bhagavan, it is so. Tathagata, it is so. The generous donor, the person of the great generous donor, even by this cause, accumulates much merit for the sake of bestowing all the means of happiness upon so many sentient beings. Bhagavan, what need is there to mention offering to an Arhat above that?" After he entreated thus, the Bhagavan spoke to the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Maitreya, saying: "Maitreya, you should believe and understand. The generous donor, the person of the great generous donor, if he serves all the sentient beings of countless hundreds of thousands of kotis of world realms with all the means of happiness, and accumulates merit by offering to an Arhat, and also, from one person to another, becomes the fiftieth hearer, and that person hears one verse or just one word from this Dharma category and rejoices, then the object of merit of that person's rejoicing is more numerous than the object of merit of the generosity of the generous donor, the person of the great generous donor, and the offering to an Arhat. Maitreya, in front of this merit that is manifestly accumulated with rejoicing and the virtue that is manifestly accumulated, the merit that was manifestly accumulated with the previous generosity and the offering to an Arhat cannot even approach one part in a hundred, one part in a thousand, one part in a hundred thousand, one part in a koti, one part in a hundred kotis, one part in a thousand kotis, one part in a hundred thousand kotis, one part in a hundred thousand trillion kotis. It cannot be counted, it cannot be numbered, it cannot be compared, and it cannot be a cause.
