If urged, what should we do? Then, those sons of good families, with reverence for the Bhagavan and with their own past conduct and aspirations, uttered a lion's roar before the Bhagavan: "Bhagavan, after the Tathagata has completely passed into nirvana, we will go to the ten directions, and by the power of the Bhagavan, we will grant permission to write down this Dharma category for sentient beings; we will grant permission to read it; we will grant permission to remember it; we will grant permission to explain it. The Bhagavan will also reside in other realms and will protect, save, and conceal us." Then, those Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas spoke these verses to the Bhagavan in harmonious tones: "Bhagavan, please do not be discouraged. After you have passed into nirvana, we, in the extremely degenerate times of the future, will explain this sacred Sutra Pitaka. We will endure the abuse, beatings, and threats with sticks from children. We will humbly guide them. In the degenerate times of the future, those with wrong views, deceitful, and arrogant children will perceive the unobtained as obtained. They will be attached to monasteries, even dividing the robes, and claiming to be practicing frugality in the use of resources. Those evil-minded ones will say such things. They will be attached to and crave flavors, and will preach the Dharma to householders, acting as if they possess the six superknowledges, and will also engage in flattery. They are filled with violent minds and hatred, and only think of family and wealth. They will enter secluded monasteries and slander us. They will say to us: 'This is for the sake of gain and honor; these monks are heretics, and they will greatly proclaim their own fabrications.' For the sake of gain and honor, they will fabricate their own sutras and preach them in the midst of the sangha, and they will greatly mock us in this way. In the presence of kings, princes, as well as the king's ministers, Brahmins, householders, and other monks, they will not praise us, and will even say that we are heretics. Because of reverence for the great sage (Buddha), we will endure all of this."

At that time, those of evil wisdom will revile us. Saying, "These ones will become Buddhas," we shall endure all things. In the destructive age of strife, in times of great and terrible fear, many monks in yaksha form will speak unpleasant words to us. Out of respect for the lord of the world, we shall rejoice and exult greatly. Having donned the armor of patience, we shall expound this sutra thoroughly. O Guide, we do not seek our bodies and lives for our own benefit. Because we seek enlightenment, we uphold your entrustment. Those evil monks who are not skilled in expounding according to circumstances, such ones will appear in later times, as the Bhagavan himself well knows. Expulsion from monasteries, various kinds of binding and beating, and even being driven out of the country, we shall endure all anger. The World-Protector has declared, "By remembering, in later times, fearlessly in the midst of the assembly, you shall thoroughly expound this sutra." O Guide, this one seeks this, wherever it arises in cities and villages. Having gone to those places, you shall offer your entrustment. O World-Sovereign, Great Hero, we understand your commission. Having attained the utterly peaceful extinction, please keep it slightly in mind. From whatever directions the lamps of the world have departed from the ten directions, knowing their aspirations, we shall speak truthful words. This concludes the twelfth chapter, called "Exhortation to Hold" from the White Lotus Sutra of the Wonderful Dharma. Twelfth: Chapter on Encouragement to Hold.
