Chapter 9: The Chapter on the Roots of Virtue. Chapter 9: The Chapter on the Roots of Virtue. Then, the Blessed One again spoke to the Venerable Ananda: "Ananda, if even generating a single thought of virtue towards the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, is not in vain, what need is there to mention other roots of virtue? Ananda, therefore, in order to widely understand this meaning, I will give you an example. Here, some wise individuals will understand through an analogy that even generating a single thought of joy towards the Tathagata is not in vain. Ananda, it is like this: For example, a certain person takes a drop of water, dividing it into a hundred parts finer than the tip of a hair, and then comes to me and says: 'O Gautama, please hold this drop of water in your hand. After a kalpa has passed, you must return it to me complete and without any loss. You must not let this drop of water be dried by the wind and the sun, do not let wild animals and flocks of birds drink it, and do not let it mix with other water. You must store this water in a container and not place it on the ground.' The Tathagata takes it and places it in the great Ganges River, in a place where it will not be disturbed by the waves. That drop of water, within the great Ganges River, is not disturbed by the waves, nor is it drunk by wild animals and flocks of birds. That drop of water flows together with the great river, gradually going into the great ocean. Then, that drop of water completely disperses, and even by the end of a kalpa, it does not disappear, but is completely held. That person also exists for a kalpa, being completely held, and I also exist for a kalpa. If that person, after a kalpa has passed, comes to me again and says: 'O Gautama, I need that drop of water, please return that drop of water to me.' Ananda, even after a kalpa has passed, the Tathagata, with his wisdom, knows that the drop of water is in such and such a place in the great ocean. Ananda, the Tathagata possesses such wisdom that the Tathagata can find that drop of water from the great ocean, that drop of water as fine as the tip of a hair.

Just as someone who goes back and forth a hundred times to fetch water, takes the water and it is not mixed with other water, does not follow other moisture, is not defiled, is not mixed, is equal and without increase or decrease, and then gives it back to that person, possesses such wisdom. Ananda, the Tathagata's wisdom is thus completely pure. The Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened One, is thus known to be great in miraculous power, great in strength, and great in authority. He possesses such immeasurable wisdom and is endowed with such unobstructed wisdom vision. Ananda, those Tathagatas who, even if a drop of water is placed so small, will not be exhausted for a long time, are noble, supreme, and keepers of what is placed. Ananda, this example is shown in order to understand the meaning. What is the meaning to be expressed here? Ananda, "the fine tip of a hair" is called a term for the mind. Ananda, "the great Ganges River" is called a term for the stream of samsara. Ananda, "one drop" is called a term for the root of virtue of generating one thought. Ananda, "the great ocean" is called a term for the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened One. Ananda, "person" is called a term for Brahmins and householder devotees. "Abiding for an eon" is called a term for the root of virtue generated for the Tathagata that will not be exhausted. Ananda, just as one drop of water of a certain person will not be exhausted for a long time. Ananda, similarly, if generating one thought for the Tathagata is also not exhausted, what need is there to mention other particularly excellent roots of virtue? Ananda, the fruit of all of these is nirvana, and I declare that they will ultimately reach nirvana. Ananda, furthermore, for the Tathagata, any sentient being who generates one thought of joy and then commits other wrongdoings

Or fallen into the animal realm, or gone to the world of Yama, whenever the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, endowed with great compassion, appear in the world, they, with the unobstructed and unimpeded wisdom of the Buddhas, know that these beings, having previously made roots of virtue, have fallen into wrongdoing due to some evil deeds. The Buddhas, the Bhagavat, knowing that they possess the roots of virtue previously made, with that virtuous mind, the blessing of the roots of virtue, and the previous cause, deliver them from that fall. Having delivered them, they turn them away from suffering. They place them on the cool shore of peace and happiness, free from fear. Having placed them, those Buddhas, the Bhagavat, say to those sons of good family: 'Remember that you previously planted and established such roots of virtue to such and such Buddhas, the Bhagavat, at such a time, in such a lifetime.' They are reminded and exhorted, and then they remember by the power of the Buddhas, and say: 'Bhagavat, it is so! Sugata, it is so!' The Buddhas, the Bhagavat, say to them: 'Sons of good family, these roots of virtue are those that were previously planted in the Buddhas; they are not exhausted, nor are they wasted. Just like this, this Nirvana, which pacifies all suffering, is also obtained from that basis. Sons of good family, you have gone to the realm of your ancestors and the realm of the noble ones. You have long walked in what is not the realm. You have revolved in the beginningless and endless cycle. Sons of good family, planting roots of virtue in beings like me is not wasted.' Ananda, just as a king's son or a merchant's son is imprisoned for some offense, and then he is mentioned and rebuked for his previous offense, and then he is quickly released. Similarly, Ananda, those who previously planted roots of virtue in the Buddhas, whether they have fallen into hell, the animal realm, or the world of Yama due to some evil deeds or other offenses, when the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, appear,
