Chapter Five: The Chapter on Vast Intelligence. Chapter Five: The Chapter on Vast Intelligence. Then, the Bodhisattva Vast Intelligence requested the Blessed One, saying: Blessed One, the Bodhisattva is skilled in the secrets of mind, intellect, and consciousness. When we say a Bodhisattva is skilled in the secrets of mind, intellect, and consciousness, Blessed One, to what extent is a Bodhisattva skilled in the secrets of mind, intellect, and consciousness? To what extent is the Tathagata called skilled in the secrets of mind, intellect, and consciousness? After this request, the Blessed One said to the Bodhisattva Vast Intelligence: Vast Intelligence, it is good, good that you have approached the Tathagata to inquire about this matter, as you have entered for the benefit of many beings, for the happiness of many beings, with love for the world, and for the purpose, benefit, and happiness of all beings including gods and humans. Vast Intelligence, therefore, listen, and I will explain to you the skill in the secrets of mind, intellect, and consciousness. Vast Intelligence, in this cycle of six realms, whatever sentient beings, in whatever category of sentient beings, whether in the birth-place of egg-born, or in the birth-place of womb-born, or in the birth-place of moisture-born, or in the birth-place of spontaneously born, where the body manifestly arises and occurs, there, initially, there are two ways of taking up: the taking up of the physical sense organs with a basis, and relying on the habit of elaboration that applies names to characteristics, names, and discriminations, the mind of all seeds ripens, enters, grows, increases, and expands. In the realm of form, both of these takings-up exist, but in the realm of the formless, these two takings-up do not exist. Vast Intelligence, consciousness is also called the consciousness of taking-up, because it holds and takes up this body. It is also called the ālaya-vijñāna (ཀུན་གཞི་རྣམ་པར་ཤེས་པ་,kun gzhi rnam par shes pa,ālaya-vijñāna,all-ground consciousness), because it completely and thoroughly connects with this body through the meaning of being one with accomplishment and happiness. It is also called mind, because...

Therefore, it is completely mixed and closely connected with form, sound, smell, taste, touch, and all dharmas. Wise one, relying on and abiding in the apprehending consciousness, these six aggregates of consciousness, namely, eye consciousness, ear consciousness, nose consciousness, tongue consciousness, body consciousness, and mind consciousness, arise. Among them, relying on the eye and form, which possess consciousness, eye consciousness arises. Simultaneously with that eye consciousness, the mind consciousness, which is simultaneous, has the same object, and discriminates, also arises. Wise one, relying on the ear, nose, tongue, which possess consciousness, and the body and touch, which possess consciousness, body consciousness arises. Simultaneously with that body consciousness, the mind consciousness, which is simultaneous, has the same object, and discriminates, also arises. If one eye consciousness arises simultaneously, then one mind consciousness, which has the same object as the eye consciousness and discriminates, also arises simultaneously. If two, three, four, or five aggregates of consciousness arise simultaneously, then there, the five aggregates of consciousness and one mind consciousness, which has the same object and discriminates, also arise simultaneously. Wise one, for example, in a great flowing river, if the condition for one wave to arise is near, then only one wave arises. If the condition for two or very many waves to arise is near, then very many waves will arise, and that river will not be interrupted by its own flow, nor will it be completely exhausted. In a very pure mirror, if the condition for one image to arise is near, then only one image arises. If the condition for two or very many images to arise is near, then very many images will arise, and that mirror
