Second, the Chapter on Extensive Learning. Second, the Chapter on Extensive Learning. The Blessed One said: "Good man, if a Bodhisattva possesses four qualities, then he has accumulated extensive learning like a great ocean, which will never be exhausted. He will constantly accumulate the precious treasure of extensive learning, understand the true meaning of all dharmas, and thereby skillfully comprehend the meaning of words. What are the four? The Bodhisattva diligently seeks the twelve parts of scripture spoken by the Buddha, namely: Sutra, Geya, Vyakarana, Gatha, Udana, Nidana, Avadana, Jataka, Vaipulya, Adbhuta-dharma, Itivrttaka, and Upadesha. After diligently seeking them, he reads and recites them; after reading and reciting them, he reflects on them correctly; after reflecting on them correctly, he diligently practices them as taught. Good man, if a Bodhisattva possesses this first quality, then he has accumulated extensive learning like a great ocean, which will never be exhausted. He will constantly accumulate the precious treasure of extensive learning, understand the true meaning of all dharmas, and thereby skillfully comprehend the meaning of words. Furthermore, good man, a Bodhisattva does not dwell on any dharma. Even when abiding in meditation and samadhi, he should not have any attachment. Because of non-attachment, he will obtain the wisdom of non-attachment from all dharmas. Having obtained the wisdom of non-attachment, he will obtain the vision of unobstructed wisdom in all dharmas. Why is that? Good man, because there is no dharma that can be bound by desire. If a Bodhisattva possesses this second quality, then he has accumulated extensive learning like a great ocean, which will never be exhausted. He will constantly accumulate the precious treasure of extensive learning, understand the true meaning of all dharmas, and thereby skillfully

will also be fully understood. Furthermore, noble son, a Bodhisattva, through the causes and conditions of fully practicing the Dharma, remembers the Buddha and remembers the Buddha's teachings. When, through the causes and conditions of the Dharma, he remembers the Buddha and remembers the Buddha's teachings, he does not truly see any Dharma that should be clung to. Because there is no clinging, he does not mentally fixate on all Dharmas. Because there is no fixation on all Dharmas, there will be no obstruction in answering questions. If a Bodhisattva possesses these three Dharmas, it is as if he has accumulated a vast ocean of learning, which will not be exhausted, and he constantly accumulates the treasure of extensive learning. Having obtained the definitive meaning from the Dharmas, he will thus understand the meaning of the words well. Furthermore, noble son, a Bodhisattva, because he possesses perfect unconditioned love, has no obstruction to purification. Unconditioned love is that which does not take up objects. Why is that? Noble son, if one abides in any sign, it also generates attachment, hatred, and delusion. If one abides in any sign, it generates attachment, hatred, and delusion. Abiding in the sign of things, or the sign of substance, or the sign of aggregates, or the sign of sources, or the sign of elements, or the sign of Dharma, or the sign of non-Dharma, also generates attachment, hatred, and delusion. Therefore, noble son, all those that are associated with the signs that are taken up are called wrong views. The Bodhisattva, in order to pacify all those signs, practices loving-kindness, because beings are destroyed, signs are also destroyed, and things are also destroyed. Because of the destruction of things, views are also destroyed. Therefore, the Bodhisattva dismantles all phenomena and practices loving-kindness. Such loving-kindness is called unconditioned loving-kindness. What is such unconditioned loving-kindness?

That is called the loving-kindness of Dharma. Such loving-kindness of Dharma is called the loving-kindness of the Buddha. What is the loving-kindness of the Buddha? That which is without manifestation of fabrication and without destruction is called the loving-kindness of the Buddha. Furthermore, that which is the correct understanding of all dharmas as they are is called the loving-kindness of the Buddha. Gangpo asked: Blessed One, how should one act in order to fully understand all dharmas as they are? The Blessed One replied: Gangpo, the term 'understanding' should not be thought of as 'this is Dharma' or 'this is not Dharma.' Why is that? Gangpo, if one says 'there is Dharma,' then that is not Dharma. If there is no Dharma, then there will be no non-Dharma either, so there is no elaboration on that. That which is without elaboration is called Nirvana. Having thoroughly examined it in that way, do you think it is very far away? Or is it very close? Gangpo asked: It is neither far away nor close. Why is that? Blessed One, such a meaning has neither direction nor place. There is neither what is called 'inner' nor what is called 'outer.' The Blessed One said: Likewise, Gangpo, your dharmas should be counted. Blessed One, what kind of dharmas should be counted? Gangpo, those dharmas that are clung to by childish ordinary beings, the Thus-Gone One does not make them an object, does not practice them, and does not manifest them. That which is not understood as such dharmas is called counting. Gangpo, those counts of dharmas are because they are not Dharma discriminations. Gangpo, now I shall explain to you such an extremely solitary, supreme, and excellent Dharma, which is the complete collection of the Buddha's path. Gangpo, in the future, if worldly people are attached to gain, if they hear this sutra, they will not be inclined to listen to and accept it. Gangpo, this word 'bodhi' that I speak, you...
