Chapter Fourteen: The Prophecy of the Retinue of the Four Great Kings Chapter Fourteen: The Prophecy of the Retinue of the Four Great Kings Thereafter, the ninety thousand gods and asuras of the retinue of the Four Great Kings, up to the gods of Garlanded Elephant, also saw the offerings. Having heard the prophecy, they were satisfied, pleased, and delighted. Great joy and happiness arose, and with a sense of contentment, they generated strong devotion in order to attain the teachings of the Buddha. For example, just as a person on a merchant ship, when reaching the middle of the water, knows the ship will break and generates strong devotion to cross from this shore to the other, so too, the ninety thousand gods of the retinue of the Four Great Kings developed joy in the greatness of the Buddha. In order to attain the teachings of the Buddha, they generated strong devotion, seeking the Buddha's teachings and striving to make offerings to the Bhagavan. Together with the Four Great Kings, they manifested ninety thousand beautiful and radiant jewels. Most of these were of the nature of red pearls, starlight color, lapis lazuli, gold, and diamonds. They also manifested ninety thousand sweet celestial musical instruments. Holding ninety thousand canopies made of various precious jewels, they played the ninety thousand sweet musical instruments, descending from the sky above. They circumambulated the Bhagavan three times, scattering Mandarava flowers, great Mandarava flowers, Manjushaka flowers, great Manjushaka flowers, Parushaka flowers, great Parushaka flowers, and emanated flowers upon the Bhagavan. They scattered them, completely scattered them, utterly scattered them. Having made these offerings, they again circumambulated the Bhagavan three times, praising him with verses: Seeing the qualities of the Victorious One, The ninety thousand gods have all come, Before you, the Guide, They stand with palms joined in reverence. There is no arrogance, nor discouragement, There is no desire, nor regret, There is no foolishness, nor wonder, They pay homage to the Two-legged One. You have destroyed the continuum of existence, Ignorance is utterly purified, The stake of craving is uprooted.

You have overthrown the banner of pride. You have extracted the thorn of suffering. You have abandoned the poison of wounds. You are the epitome of knowing and acting. Guide, you revive the wounds. You have abandoned all afflictions. You have severed all bonds. You are detached from all unions. Sage, you have transcended all attachments. The realm of the Victorious One is: Emptiness and absence of characteristics. To the Blessed One, the aspiration is also: In all aspects, possessing a name. You have uprooted and cast away craving. Ignorance has pierced the heart. The four inversions. Are completely abandoned in every way. Where the world is small. Like a clever hunter. It becomes fearful and afraid. You have truly seen the ultimate reality. Sentient beings fall like a collapsing heap. Because they do not understand praise. They are shrouded in the darkness of ignorance. They delight in the prison of samsara. You have truly and accurately. Seen those beings in the void of annihilation. By what pure eye is transformed. The light of wisdom is fully revealed. Disassembling the aggregates into emptiness. Name and form are also like accumulation. The elements and the sense bases. Are disassembled into selflessness and emptiness. By what dharma and by what name. How should one proclaim what dharma. That dharma is empty by that dharma. Sage, you have taught emptiness. When a magician, on something non-existent. Manifests a great multitude of beings. There is no sentient being to be found therein. Just as there is no life and no person. Likewise, the aggregates, the elements. The faculties and the sense bases too. Are not real, but an illusion. The holy being has taught thus. Just as a painter. Paints the image of a woman. Although he shows equality and inequality. Heaviness and lightness. He deceives the eyes of children. There is no inequality in it. Likewise, the realm of dharma is equal. Children are deluded by it. Whoever understands your teachings. Well-learned, will not be deluded. Like a myrobalan in the palm of the hand. The all-knowing one, you have taught thus. With your great wisdom. Kindling the lamp of wisdom. After turning the excellent wheel of dharma. Teaching the dharma to sentient beings. May we swiftly.
