Second, the chapter on the Passing of the King. Second, the chapter on the Passing of the King. Then, not long after the venerable Asvajit passed away, King Suddhodana admonished the Sakyas, saying: "Friends, it is like this: for example, the sign of the sunrise is the appearance of a red glow. When the red glow appears, it is known that the sun will rise. Friends, in the same way, the monk Asvajit is also a sign of the coming of the Bhagavan, the All-Knowing One. Whatever qualities the monk Asvajit speaks of are certainly the qualities of the All-Knowing One. Friends, therefore, prepare those excellent vehicles. Why is that? Because today we will go to see the Bhagavan, who is supremely beautiful to behold." The Sakyas replied, "Excellent!" and listened to King Suddhodana's command, quickly praising the excellent vehicles. At that time, King Suddhodana ordered that the entire area between Kapilavastu and Nyagrodha Park be leveled as the king's path, spread with clean sand, and decorated to be pleasing to the eye, filled with flowers, adorned with silk banners and many garlands, and at intervals, dancers, musicians, wrestlers, drummers, cymbal players, musical instruments, singing equipment, and all kinds of implements were arranged. Then, King Suddhodana, together with the best of vehicles, and himself riding on the best of vehicles, set out from the great city of Kapilavastu and went to the Nyagrodha Park. At that time, the vehicles of some of the Sakyas were of this kind: all the chariots were blue, drawn by blue horses, the ornaments were also blue, adorned with nets of bells and chimes, surrounded by blue ornaments, with umbrellas, swords, helmets, jewel-adorned yak-tail fans, blue celestial maiden ornaments, attendants wearing uncut blue cloth and carrying blue ornaments were attending, holding whips with blue ornaments, equipped with many guides, and blue banners were raised. Each chariot had a hundred people adorned with blue ornaments.

surrounded by their respective retinues. Such were the vehicles of the Shakya Lela. Like this, the chariots were all red, all white, and all radiant. Each chariot was also surrounded by hundreds of people with colorful ornaments, just like before. Behind each of those chariots, there were also eighty thousand elephants adorned with golden ornaments, all furnished with golden banners and covered with golden nets. On top of those eighty thousand elephants, eighty thousand radiant and pleasing seven-jeweled palaces were placed, and then they proceeded. Behind those eighty thousand elephants, there were also eighty thousand horses adorned with golden ornaments, strung with golden bells, and possessing seven-jeweled decorations, furnished and then proceeding. Then, the Blessed One saw King Shuddhodana and the Shakyas coming from afar and said to the monks: Monks, those of you who have not seen the gods of the Thirty-Three going to the pleasure garden, look at these who are coming from the Shakya's rice field place! Why is that? Monks, those Shakyas who have come from the rice field place are similar to the gods of the Thirty-Three going to the pleasure garden. To this, it should be said: From the sacred city called Rice Field Place, King Shuddhodana, the supreme among men, how he comes with his retinue, listen to me! Hundreds of thousands of supreme chariots, well decorated and beautifully adorned, from the sacred city of Rice Field Place, the supreme among men has appeared. The chariot is blue, and the decoration is also blue, the horse is also blue, together with the blue retinue. The five marks are also all blue, likewise, the supreme clothes are also blue. The whip is also blue, and the ropes are also blue. Together with the net of jingling bells, the people are also wearing blue clothes, adorned by raising blue banners. The chariot is yellow, and the decoration is also yellow, the horse is also yellow, together with the yellow retinue. The five marks are also all yellow.
