"What is Dharma?" He replied, "Son of good family, that in which letters do not arise at all is Dharma. Therefore, all Dharmas are unspeakable, soundless, and without expression. Son of good family, whoever says 'I am speaking' is speaking falsely. Whoever speaks falsely has no Dharma, no discipline." He asked, "Lord of Secrets, if the Tathagata speaks the Dharma, will he not become a false speaker?" He replied, "Peaceful Intelligence, the Tathagata has not spoken a single letter. Have I not said before that he does not speak? However, due to the power of aspiration, the words of the Tathagata are perceived by sentient beings." He asked, "What fault is there in speaking?" He replied, "It becomes a fault of verbal action." He asked, "What fault arises from verbal action?" He replied, "It becomes the fault of reading letters with the mind." He asked, "What is without fault?" He replied, "That which does not speak or express has no consciousness whatsoever. The absence of consciousness is without fault. That which does not create consciousness for oneself or for others is without fault." He asked, "What is the root of fault?" He replied, "The root of fault is clinging." He asked, "What is the root of clinging?" He replied, "Manifest clinging is the root." He asked, "What is the root of manifest clinging?" He replied, "The unreal conceptualization is the root." He asked, "What is the root of unreal conceptualization?" He replied, "The view of excessive focus is the root." He asked, "On what does one excessively focus?" He replied, "One excessively focuses on forms, sounds, smells, tastes, tangible objects, and Dharmas." He asked, "What is it like not to excessively focus?" He replied, "If one does not excessively focus on the latent tendencies of existence, Peaceful Intelligence, therefore, in order to abandon the focus on craving, the Tathagata taught the Dharma. Lord of Secrets, when this teaching of Vajrapani is explained, five hundred monks are liberated in mind, and two hundred Bodhisattvas attain acceptance of the Dharma of non-arising." This is the seventeenth chapter, entitled "The Discourse on Non-Duality." Seventeenth Chapter: The Discourse on Non-Duality.
