Knowing that their mara palaces were collapsing and becoming damp, they thought to themselves: What is the cause, what is the reason, that these places appear damp? Is it that a bodhisattva is sitting at the heart of bodhi and will not awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment? As they looked around, they saw the bodhisattva sitting at the heart of bodhi. Then those wicked maras disappeared from their respective places, and each mara, surrounded by billions, trillions, hundreds of thousands of yakshas with many different colors, many different garments, many different shapes, many different sizes, many different movements, many different heads, many different weapons, and many different banners, spoke in many different ways, and with the great power of the maras and the great magical powers of the maras, each mara's retinue was twenty thousand yojanas in extent, filling eighty-four thousand yojanas around, and came to the foot of the bodhi tree. With great force, it would harm sentient beings, so that sound was made inaudible. This act of Peaceful Wisdom is also the realm of the Bodhisattva's skillful means. Peaceful Wisdom, the gods who attend to enlightenment, knowing that the demons had come, warded off those evil demons with sixteen kinds of repulsions. Evil ones, what can you do, you who delight in causing poverty and misfortune? You are too insignificant! Why is that? Evil one, you are like a small wrestler encountering a great wrestler, you will be defeated by the Bodhisattva. Evil one, you are like a great hero destroying the enemy's army, you will be defeated by the Bodhisattva. Evil one, you are like a firefly encountering the moon, you will be overwhelmed by the Bodhisattva. Evil one, you are like a gust of wind blowing on a handful of chaff, you will be destroyed by the Bodhisattva. Evil one, you are like a great tree being uprooted, you will be overthrown by the Bodhisattva. Evil one, you are like a lion charging into a herd of deer, you will be frightened away by the Bodhisattva. Evil one, you are like sunlight falling on dirty water, you will be completely purified by the Bodhisattva. Evil one, you are like a great king attacking an unfriendly city, you will be destroyed by the Bodhisattva. Evil one, you are like missing the chance to kill an unkillable person, you will be driven away by the Bodhisattva. Evil one, you are like a merchant losing a large amount of travel expenses, you will be confused by the Bodhisattva. Evil one, you are like a king of Dharma losing his kingdom, you will be made to grieve by the Bodhisattva. Evil one, you are like an old crane with broken wings, you will be placed in the heart by the Bodhisattva.

Sinner, you are like a great vajra falling on a stone, but the Bodhisattva will completely destroy you. Peaceful Wisdom, in this way, the gods who attend to enlightenment avert the evil demons with sixteen kinds of aversion, but those evil demons do not turn back. Then, the Bodhisattva, in countless billions of eons, practices giving, subduing, well-disciplining, morality, patience, diligence, meditation, wisdom, loving-kindness, compassion, joy, equanimity, mindfulness, right abandonment, miraculous feet, faculties, powers, branches of enlightenment, the path, calm abiding, insight, knowledge, and completely purifying liberation. Therefore, he extends his right hand, which is soft, young, very young, and like the color of gold. Moved by great compassion and with the extraordinary intention to completely liberate all beings, starting from the crown of his head, he anoints his entire body, manifests all the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, of all realms, and with mindfulness and awareness, strikes the great earth.
