Chapter 9: The Secret of the Tathagata's Mind. Chapter 9: The Secret of the Tathagata's Mind. Again, the Lord of Secrets, Vajrapani, said to the great Bodhisattva Peaceful Intelligence: "Peaceful Intelligence, what is the secret of the Tathagata's mind, and what is the complete purification of the activities of the mind? Peaceful Intelligence, it is like this: For example, those beings who are born in the realm of gods who abide in the formless realm, even if they abide for eighty-four thousand kalpas with a single object of consciousness, they do not reach the ultimate limit of samadhi. Their consciousness does not follow after other consciousnesses. Then, having died and transmigrated, they take birth according to how they have accumulated karma. Peaceful Intelligence, likewise, the consciousness of the Tathagata does not abide. From the night when the Bodhisattva attains unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, manifesting perfect and complete Buddhahood, until the night when the Tathagata enters completely into the realm of nirvana without remainder of aggregates, the Tathagata's mind has no turning back. The mind has no conceptualization. The mind has no discrimination. The mind has no alteration. The mind has no measure. The mind has no disturbance. The mind has no elimination. The mind has no distraction. The mind has no pride. The mind has no inferiority. The mind has no guarding. The mind has no movement. The mind has no extreme joy. The mind has no confusion. The mind has no holding of grudges. The mind has no deception. The mind has no definite thought. The mind has no delight. The mind has no harm. The mind has no entering. The mind has no extreme movement. The mind has no conceptualization. The mind has no various conceptualizations. The mind has no complete conceptualizations. The mind has no calm abiding. The mind has no vipashyana. The mind does not follow after consciousness. It does not abide in its own mind. It does not look at the minds of others. The mind does not abide in the eye. It does not abide in the Dharma. The mind does not abide in an object. The mind does not abide in the mind. The mind does not abide within."

There is no attachment. The mind does not dwell outside. The mind does not enter into the dharmas. The mind does not enter into wisdom. The mind does not contemplate the past, future, or present. Peaceful Wisdom, the Tathagata is thus one whose mind is completely pure; the mind does not manifest any dharma, and yet its wisdom enters into all dharmas without attachment or hindrance. Because one's own mind is completely pure, one does not see the mind of any sentient being as impure; even seeing is not seeing, it is peaceful and without discrimination. Even seeing, one does not engage in elaboration. One does not see seeing with seeing and differentiated seeing. The Tathagata's wisdom is not the seeing of the flesh eye, nor the seeing of the divine eye, nor the seeing of the wisdom eye, nor the seeing of the Dharma eye, nor the seeing of the Buddha eye. It is not the hearing of the divine ear, nor the seeing of the minds of others, nor the recollection of former lives, nor the manifestation of miraculous powers, nor the knowledge of the exhaustion of defilements, yet it is also not that it does not correspond with all dharmas, but rather it corresponds without attachment to all dharmas. The streams of that Tathagata's wisdom are without effort, and are spontaneously accomplished and abide without manifest action. He also sees all the actions of sentient beings. He also thoroughly knows the afflictions and purifications of all sentient beings. His knowledge of the ten powers, the fearlessnesses, and the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha is also without forgetting, and those qualities of the Tathagata are spontaneously accomplished, without effort, and enter without manifest action. The Tathagata is also separated from mind, intellect, and consciousness, and also does not abandon the state of samadhi. He also does all that Buddhas do not do, and his wisdom, which has no attachment to all dharmas, also does not attach to anything. Peaceful Wisdom, for example, whatever second Tathagata is emanated by the Tathagata, that one has no mind, and also no intellect.
