The Sutra of Ri Kundgawo. The Sutra of Ri Kundgawo. In Sanskrit: Giri Ananda Sutra. In Tibetan: The Sutra of Ri Kundgawo. Homage to the noble Three Jewels with reverence. Thus have I heard, at one time, the Blessed One was dwelling in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Garden in Shravasti. At that time, at that moment, the venerable Ri Kundgawo was afflicted by a severe and painful illness. Then, the venerable Kundgawo went to where the Blessed One was, and having arrived, prostrated to the Blessed One and sat to one side. Having sat to one side, the venerable Kundgawo said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable one, the venerable Ri Kundgawo is afflicted by a severe and painful illness. Venerable one, I beseech the Blessed One to act kindly. Monk, go to where the venerable Ri Kundgawo is, and go with compassion." Then, the Blessed One said to the venerable Kundgawo: "Also, Kundgawo, you go to the monk Ri Kundgawo and explain the ten perceptions. Speak also of the place that is endowed with consciousness. Furthermore, when the monk Ri Kundgawo hears these ten perceptions, he will be able to separately recognize the places afflicted by illness. What are the ten? The perception of impermanence, the perception of selflessness, the perception of impurity, the perception of cutting off, the perception of abandonment, the perception of detachment from desire, the perception of cessation, the perception of not rejoicing in all the world, the perception of impermanence in all compounded things, and the perception of mindfulness of breathing in and out. What is the perception of impermanence? This, venerable Kundgawo, go to a solitary place, or under a tree, or to an empty house, and you should separately recognize this. Form is impermanent, feeling is impermanent, perception is impermanent, formation is impermanent, consciousness is impermanent; these are the five aggregates of taking, which should be seen as impermanent. Therefore, teach the perception of impermanence. Kundgawo, what is the perception of selflessness? This, monk Kundgawo, go to a solitary place, or

Either under a tree or going to an empty room, one should separately examine these. The eye is without self, form is without self, the ear is without self, sound is without self, the nose is without self, smell is without self, the tongue is without self, taste is without self, the body is without self, touch is without self, the mind is without self, phenomena are without self. These are the six internal and six external sources, all without self. One should look at and contemplate what is without self. Venerable Ananda, teach these things that are without self. Venerable Ananda, the perception of impurity is that a monk, Venerable Ananda, should examine this very body, from the top of the head to the soles of the feet, enclosed by the skin, full of various kinds of impurities. In this body are hair, body hair, nails, teeth, skin, flesh, sinews, bones, marrow, kidneys, heart, liver, lungs, spleen, stomach, large intestine, small intestine, bladder, feces, bile, phlegm, pus, blood, sweat, fat, tears, grease, saliva, mucus, pus-like fluid, urine, and brain—these are the thirty-two impure substances. One should look at this body as impure. Venerable Ananda, teach these impurities. Venerable Ananda, what are the interruptions? A monk, Venerable Ananda, should go to a monastery, or under a tree, or to an empty room, and separately examine these. This body has much suffering and many interruptions. Various kinds of diseases arise in this body. For example, eye disease, ear disease, nose disease, tongue disease, body disease, head disease, inner ear disease, mouth disease, tooth disease, lung disease, difficulty in breathing, rhinitis, fever, stomach disease, fainting, hemicrania, sores, boils, ringworm, smallpox, consumption, forgetfulness, hemorrhoids, scabies, body itching, herpes, eczema, blood bile disease, diabetes (madhumeha, मधुमेहा,madhumeha, honey urine), carbuncle (aṃga, अङ्ग, aṃga, limb), scrofula (sīlāka, सीलाका, sīlāka, stone piece), swollen testicles, bile disorders, and phlegm disorders.
