Then, the lord of the gods, Indra, said this to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, this perfection of wisdom is profound! Alas, Blessed One, this perfection of wisdom is difficult to see and difficult to realize!" After he had said this, the Blessed One said this to the lord of the gods, Indra: "Kauśika, it is just so, it is just so. Kauśika, this perfection of wisdom is profound! Kauśika, this perfection of wisdom is difficult to see and difficult to realize, because the sky is deep, this perfection of wisdom is deep. This perfection of wisdom is difficult to see because it is secluded. It is difficult to realize because it is empty." After he had said this, the lord of the gods, Indra, said this to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, those beings who will listen to this profound perfection of wisdom, and having heard it, will also hold it, recite it, understand it, diligently recite it, explain it, explain it in detail, uphold the words, chant it, and write it down, those beings do not possess meager roots of virtue!" Kauśika, if all the beings in Jambudvipa, however many there are, were established on the path of the ten virtuous actions, Kauśika, what do you think? Would those beings accumulate even more merit on that basis?" Indra replied: "Blessed

Many have passed away! Many Sugatas! The Blessed One said: Kausika, whether a son or daughter of good family generates more merit than this: whoever listens to, hears, and then grasps, holds, recites, comprehends, diligently recites, teaches, closely teaches, instructs, chants, and writes down this Perfection of Wisdom. Kausika, whatever son or daughter of good family listens to this profound Perfection of Wisdom, and having heard it, grasps, holds, recites, comprehends, diligently recites, teaches, closely teaches, instructs, chants, and writes it down, the accumulation of merit from the roots of virtue they possess, compared to the accumulation of merit arising from the discipline of all beings in Jambudvipa, does not even approach one part in a hundred, one part in a thousand, one part in a hundred thousand, one part in a koti, one part in a hundred koti, one part in a thousand koti, one part in a hundred thousand koti, one part in a hundred thousand koti. It does not even approach in number, cannot be compared, cannot be illustrated by examples, cannot be a basis, cannot be a cause. Then another monk said to Indra, the lord of the gods: Kausika, that son or daughter of good family who listens to this profound Perfection of Wisdom, and having heard it, grasps, holds, recites, comprehends, diligently recites, teaches, closely teaches, instructs, chants, and writes it down, has surpassed you! Having said this, Indra, the lord of the gods, said to that monk: Noble one, even a single thought of enlightenment generated by that son or daughter of good family has surpassed me! What need is there to say about listening to, grasping, holding, reciting, comprehending, diligently reciting, teaching, closely teaching, instructing, chanting, and writing down this profound Perfection of Wisdom? What about after hearing it?
