Chapter Sixty-Five: The Chapter on the Means of Serving. Chapter Sixty-Five: The Chapter on the Means of Serving. Having spoken thus, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, the practice of a Bodhisattva, the practice of a Bodhisattva, if it is called the practice of a Bodhisattva, Blessed One, what is the synonym for what is called the practice of a Bodhisattva?" The Blessed One said: "Subhuti, what is called the practice of a Bodhisattva is the practice for the sake of enlightenment. Therefore, it is called the practice of a Bodhisattva." He asked: "Blessed One, upon what does the practice of enlightenment of a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practice?" The Blessed One said: "He practices upon the emptiness of form, and he practices upon the emptiness of feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness. Likewise, he practices upon the emptiness of the elements, the sense bases, and the internal and external dharmas. He practices upon the emptiness of the perfection of generosity, and he practices upon the emptiness of the perfection of morality, the perfection of patience, the perfection of diligence, the perfection of meditation, and the perfection of wisdom. He practices upon the emptiness of internal emptiness, and he practices upon the emptiness of external emptiness, and he practices upon the emptiness of internal and external emptiness. Likewise, combining them, he practices upon the emptiness up to the emptiness of self-nature. He practices upon the emptiness of the first dhyana, the second dhyana, the third dhyana, and the fourth dhyana. He practices upon the emptiness of loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity. He practices upon the emptiness of the sphere of infinite space, the sphere of infinite consciousness, the sphere of nothingness, and the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception. He practices upon the emptiness of the four mindfulnesses, and he practices upon the emptiness of the four right abandonments, and he practices upon the emptiness of the four legs of miraculous power. He practices upon the emptiness of the five faculties, and he practices upon the emptiness of the five powers, and he practices upon the emptiness of the seven branches of enlightenment.

The eight branches of the noble path are practiced as emptiness, and the doors of liberation, emptiness, signlessness, wishlessness, all the samadhis, the ten powers of the Tathagata, the four fearlessnesses, the four analytical knowledges, the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha, the complete purification of the Buddha-field are practiced as emptiness, causing sentient beings to fully mature is practiced as emptiness, the confidences are practiced as emptiness, the practice of letters is practiced as emptiness, and the entry into letters is practiced as emptiness, and the entry into the non-existence of letters is practiced as emptiness, and form is practiced as emptiness, and the realm of the conditioned is practiced as emptiness, and the realm of the unconditioned is practiced as emptiness. Therefore, from where one does not make a duality of enlightenment, one should practice accordingly. Subhuti, if a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom in that way, it is practicing for the sake of enlightenment. After he said that, the venerable Subhuti said this to the Blessed One: Blessed One, if we say Buddha, Buddha, Blessed One, what is the synonym for calling Buddha? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, the meaning of reality is called Buddha. Subhuti, also because he has truly realized the true Dharma, therefore he is called Buddha. Subhuti, also because he has realized the true meaning, therefore he is called Buddha. Subhuti, also because he has truly realized all dharmas as they are, therefore he is called Buddha. He said: Blessed One, if we say Bodhi, Bodhi, what is the synonym for calling Bodhi? The Buddha said: Subhuti, that which is called Bodhi is a synonym for emptiness. That is a synonym for Suchness. That is a synonym for reality. That is a synonym for the limit of reality. That is a synonym for the sphere of Dharma. Subhuti, also called Bodhi, that is only a synonym for name.

It is the meaning of purity. Furthermore, Subhuti, enlightenment is suchness, non-erroneousness is suchness, non-otherness is suchness, and the nature of non-otherness; therefore, it is called enlightenment. Furthermore, Subhuti, enlightenment is that which realizes all phenomena as mere names and signs; therefore, it is called enlightenment. Subhuti, enlightenment is the enlightenment of the Buddhas, the Bhagavat; therefore, it is called enlightenment. Furthermore, Subhuti, enlightenment is that by which the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, manifestly and perfectly awaken; therefore, it is called enlightenment. When this was said, the venerable Subhuti said to the Bhagavat: Bhagavat, if a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices this enlightenment, it is practicing the six perfections, and even practicing all-knowingness. What is the root of virtue that is accumulated, diminished, decayed, increased, arisen, ceased, completely defiled, or completely purified? When this was said, the Bhagavat said to the venerable Subhuti: Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who practices this enlightenment, practices the six perfections, and even practices all-knowingness, does not practice for the sake of accumulating any dharma, nor for the sake of diminishing, nor for the sake of decaying, nor for the sake of increasing, nor for the sake of arising, nor for the sake of ceasing, nor for the sake of completely defiling, nor for the sake of completely purifying. Why is that? Subhuti, the enlightenment of a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who practices the Perfection of Wisdom does not abide closely in a manner of clinging, for the sake of accumulating, diminishing, decaying, increasing, arising, ceasing, completely defiling, or completely purifying. He asked: Bhagavat, if the enlightenment of a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who practices the Perfection of Wisdom is dharma,
