Chapter Fifty-Seven Chapter Fifty-Seven Furthermore, Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the perfection of morality, from the moment of generating the initial thought, with the intention of possessing all-knowingness, he guards morality. For him, the mind of attachment will not become an obstacle, hatred will not become an obstacle, ignorance will not become an obstacle, latent tendencies will not become an obstacle, pervasive activity will not become an obstacle. Other non-virtuous dharmas that become obstacles to enlightenment, such as stinginess, or bad morality, or a disturbed mind, or a lazy mind, or a mind with little diligence, or a distracted mind, or a mind of perverse wisdom, or pride, or contempt, or great pride, or the pride of 'I', or the mind of a Hearer, or the mind of a Solitary Buddha, will also not become obstacles. Why is that? Subhuti, it is because he knows that all dharmas are empty of their own nature, and he sees all dharmas as non-existent, unborn, unfulfilled, and unmanifest. Even if he enters into the dharma-nature of all dharmas, all dharmas are without any power. He enters with the nature of non-action. Because he possesses such skillful means, he cultivates the perfection of morality by increasing virtuous roots. He practices the perfection of morality, and he ripens all sentient beings, and he purifies the Buddha-field. Otherwise, for the sake of saving all sentient beings and ripening sentient beings, apart from practicing the perfection of morality, he does not desire such a result as the fruit of morality that is enjoyed in samsara. Furthermore, Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the perfection of patience, from the moment of generating the initial thought, he cultivates patience with the intention of possessing all-knowingness. For him, the mind of attachment will not become an obstacle, hatred will not become an obstacle, ignorance will not become an obstacle, latent tendencies will not become an obstacle,

Thus, knowing that all dharmas are empty of their own nature, and seeing that all dharmas are non-existent, unborn, incomplete, and unmanifest, even if one enters the dharma nature of dharmas, all dharmas are without any power. One enters through the characteristic of non-action. Because one possesses such skillful means, one engages in the perfection of diligence, increasing virtuous roots. He engages in the perfection of diligence, and completely matures sentient beings, and completely purifies the Buddha-fields. Furthermore, in order to completely protect all sentient beings and to completely mature sentient beings, other than engaging in the perfection of diligence, there is no desire for such a result as fully enjoying the fruits of diligence in samsara. Furthermore, Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva engages in the perfection of meditation, from the initial generation of the mind, he takes hold, and with the intention of possessing all-aspects of knowledge, he enters into all the meditations. Attachment will not obscure him, hatred will not obscure him, delusion will not obscure him, latent tendencies will not obscure him, manifest activity will not obscure him, and other non-virtuous dharmas that become obstacles to enlightenment, such as miserliness or bad morality, or a disturbed mind, or a lazy mind, or a mind of weak diligence, or a distracted mind, or a mind of perverse wisdom, or pride or contempt or great pride or the pride of 'I', or even the mind of a Hearer or the mind of a Solitary Buddha, will not obscure him. Why is that? Subhuti, it is because he knows that all dharmas are empty of their own nature, and he sees that all dharmas are non-existent, unborn, incomplete, and unmanifest.
