Having seen this, they would exclaim "Alas!" and disparage, thinking, "Brahmins, householders, and ascetics squeeze skin, flesh, and blood, giving gifts and performing meritorious deeds. But the monks, without knowing hot or cold, enjoy them without discrimination." Monks, it is good for you to enjoy what is given with faith moderately, abandoning, timely, observing, and sparingly. In summary: To enjoy moderately and abandoning, Likewise, timely and observing, To enjoy sparingly is. Then, the Blessed One praised enjoying moderately, abandoning, observing, and sparingly, and then said to the monks: Monks, therefore, seeing the ten benefits correctly, one should establish the foundation of learning for the disciples in the Vinaya. Like this and so on, as before. My disciples, for the learning of the Vinaya, should recite like this: If a monk makes a new seat, in order to make the new seat's color unappealing, he should use an old seat, that is, the Sugata's span around the edge. If a monk, in order to make the new seat's color unappealing, does not use an old seat, that is, the Sugata's span around the edge, and uses a new seat, he commits a Nissaggiya Pacittiya offense. Monk, refers to the one who possesses this Dharma. Seat, refers to each individual seat. New, refers to two kinds of new: newly made and newly obtained. Here, it refers to the newly made one. Making, refers to making it oneself or having others make it. In order to make the new seat's color unappealing, it means to make the new seat sturdy. One should use an old seat, that is, the Sugata's span around the edge, which means if he has another old seat, that is, the Sugata's span around the edge. Sugata, refers to the teacher. The Sugata's span, refers to half of a cubit and a dou with a measure. Around, refers to

Because everything is towering. The term "should be sewn" means should be connected. The term "not sewn" means not connected. The term "forsaking offense" means that after abandoning that object, one should confess the offense of transgression. Therefore, it is called forsaking offense. So, how does one commit an offense? If a monk uses a new cushion, no matter how small, without sewing the old cushion with a span of the Sugata, he will commit a forsaking offense. If the old cushion is completely worn out, or has holes, or cannot be repaired, there is no offense. If there is not that much (old cushion), there is no offense. For beginners, the insane, the mentally disturbed, and those afflicted by suffering, there is no offense. The abandonment of a span, that is, the fifteenth, is complete. Fifteenth, explaining the abandonment of a span.
