The fourteenth, concerning the teaching of abandonment held for six years. The fourteenth, concerning the teaching of abandonment held for six years. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was dwelling in Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's Garden in Shravasti. At that time, such an idea arose in the minds of the monks: "These mats are too many. They say, 'This mat is too long, this is too short.' Then they abandon it and use others. This mat is too narrow, this is too wide. This is full of holes everywhere, worn out, and difficult to repair.' They abandon it and use others. These monks make and make, discard the mats, causing things to increase and actions to decrease. Recitation, reading, chanting, yoga, attention, and the inner peace of mind are disturbed. Monks, why are you so content with little?" Monks, such an idea arose: "These mats are too many. They say, 'This mat is too long, this is too short.' Then they abandon it and use others. This mat is too narrow, this is too wide. This is full of holes everywhere, worn out, and difficult to repair.' They abandon it and use others. These monks make and make, discard the mats, causing things to increase and actions to increase. Recitation, reading, chanting, yoga, attention, and the inner peace of mind are disturbed," they scold each other, slander each other, and exclude each other. At that time, the monks reported this matter to the Bhagavan. Then, because of this event, this origin, this cause, the Bhagavan convened the monastic community of monks, and so on, as before. The Buddhas, the Bhagavans, act knowingly, and so on, also as before. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, rebuked the monks: "Monks, how could such an idea arise in your minds: 'These mats are too many?' You say, 'This mat is too long, this is too short.' Then you abandon it and use others. This mat is too narrow, this is too wide."

So. This, in all of everything, is a hole and, flesh exhausted and, difficult to heal those themselves. Is it true to abandon it and allow others to do it? Venerable ones, no. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, has greatly condemned great desire and, not knowing contentment and, difficult to nourish and, difficult to fill. Then the Bhagavan praised small desire and, knowing contentment and, easy to nourish and, easy to fill and, reducing and, simple implements and, the merits of practice and, beautiful and, warm awareness itself, and then to the monks He gave the command: Monks, therefore, seeing the ten benefits perfectly, you should establish the basis of learning for the hearers in discipline, and so on as before. My hearers should recite the basis of learning in discipline in this way: If a monk makes a new seat, he must keep it for six years unwillingly. If a monk abandons that old seat within six years, it is okay, even if he does not abandon it, if he makes another new seat, he commits a relinquishing offense, the Bhagavan established the basis of learning for the hearers in discipline. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, dwelt in a solitary place, in a solitary forest. Because the solitary place was cold and windy, the chief monks could not endure the seat for six years, and those coldnesses interrupted the work place. The Buddhas, the Bhagavans, act knowingly, act knowingly, know but do not act, act in time, do not act out of time, act in accordance with meaning, do not act not in accordance with meaning, the Buddhas, the Bhagavans, block acting not in accordance with meaning with a water dam. Among them, the Buddhas, the Bhagavans, are knowers of time, because they act in accordance with meaning. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, greeted the venerable Ananda: Ananda, why have the chief monks interrupted the work place? Venerable one, the Bhagavan said this: If a monk makes a new seat, he must keep it for six years unwillingly. If a monk abandons that old seat within six years, it is okay

It is okay not to abandon it. If another seat is used, it is an offense of abandonment. In the Vinaya Sutra, the Blessed One established the basis of training for the Shravakas. Therefore, those monks with cracked hands, who could not use cushions for up to six years, often perished from the cold. The Blessed One said: 'Ananda, any monk with cracked hands who cannot use a cushion for six years should request permission from the Sangha to use a cushion for up to six years.' The request should be made as follows: After arranging the dwelling, strike the ghanta and admonish the monks with words of inquiry. When the entire Sangha has gathered and is in harmony, the monk with cracked hands should expose one shoulder, prostrate according to seniority, squat next to the elders, join his palms, and say: 'Venerable Sangha, please listen. I, a monk with cracked hands, named so-and-so, have been unable to use a cushion for six years. I, a monk with cracked hands, named so-and-so, humbly request the Sangha to grant me permission to use a cushion for up to six years out of compassion.' The request should be repeated twice or three times in this way. Those monks should not act out of trust or confidence in the monk with cracked hands, but should have the entire Sangha go there, or send monks appointed by the Sangha, and have them bring the cushion before their eyes, or bring the cushion to the center of the Sangha. If the cushion is too long, they should cut it short. If it is too short, wool should be added. If it is too wide, they should sew it together. If it is too narrow, wool should be added. If it is torn or has holes, wool should be added. If it is full of holes, worn out, and difficult to repair, then one monk should make a request and perform the karma below it. Venerable Sangha, please listen. This monk with cracked hands, named so-and-so, has been six
