Great King, furthermore, I have given many gifts and performed many meritorious deeds for the sake of seeking the unsurpassed, perfectly complete, and enlightened Bodhi. Listen to what I have done. Great King, in the past, in the city called Varanasi, there was a king named Brahma-datta who ruled the kingdom. From "wealthy and prosperous" to "ruling the kingdom according to Dharma" is the same as before. At that time, the diviners prophesied that there would be no rain in Varanasi for twelve years. Then, King Brahma-datta had an announcement made in his country: "Listen, knowledgeable citizens living in my country! The diviners have prophesied that there will be no rain for twelve years. Those of you who have enough food and drink for twelve years, stay! The others should go to a place where food and drink are plentiful! Return when the years are good again!" At that time, in the city of Varanasi, there lived a householder named Mediator, who was wealthy, had abundant possessions, enjoyed great prosperity, was vast, spacious, possessed the wealth of Vaishravana, and whose wealth rivaled that of Vaishravana. He summoned his steward and said: "Hey, inner manager, do we have enough provisions to support myself and my retinue for twelve years?" He replied: "Master, we do." Then, the householder Mediator and his retinue stayed. The other crowds went to places where food and drink were plentiful. When Buddhas do not appear, solitary Buddhas, who have compassion for the lowly and the wicked, who delight in solitary places, and who are the sole objects of veneration in the world, will appear. At that time, in one direction of Varanasi, five hundred solitary Buddhas resided. In another direction, there were also five hundred solitary Buddhas. Then, those five hundred solitary Buddhas, in the morning, having put on their robes, carrying their begging bowls and Dharma robes, went to where the householder Mediator was, and upon arriving, said this to the householder Mediator: "Householder, can you offer alms to five hundred renunciates for twelve years?"

They sowed the seeds. The wisdom of the lord of the gods, Indra, is to look downwards, so he thought, "Among all the objects of offerings in the world, the most excellent are the solitary Buddhas, and among all the patrons, the most excellent is the householder Mediator, I should help them."
