Homage to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas! Thus have I heard. Once, the Blessed One was dwelling in Rājagṛha on Vulture Peak Mountain, together with a great Saṅgha of monks, one thousand two hundred and fifty monks, and also with the venerable Ānanda who was attending him. At that time, the wandering heretics, in order to harm the Blessed One, sent forth seven great Vetālas. When they went to the Blessed One, they could not find an opportunity, nor could they find a target. Since they could not find an opportunity, nor could they find a target, they went to where the venerable Ānanda was, and touched the body of the venerable Ānanda. As soon as they touched him, Ānanda was filled with unbearable, intense, and burning suffering, feeling as if he was about to die. Venerable One, Blessed One, it is so. Ananda, therefore, listen well and thoroughly, and keep it in mind, and I will speak. Ananda, the great Rakshasa that is touching you is powerful, difficult to subdue, and if seen, there are seven harms. Which seven? They are: the Garland Holder, the Jewel Holder, the Fierce One, the Chandalas, the Peacock Heart, the Life Ender, and the Lava One. These seven great Rakshasas are powerful, difficult to subdue, difficult to approach, have great magical powers, and are mighty. Ananda, each Rakshasa, if they wish, can throw the King of Mountains, Mount Sumeru, with the thumb of their left foot. The King of Mountains, Mount Sumeru, will be shattered into the size of mustard seeds. Looking upwards will cause it to crack, looking sideways will cause death, looking in the four directions will cause it to be burned by fire. They have touched you. Even so, due to the power of the Tathagata, the reverence for hearing the Dharma, and the blessings of the Tathagata, your body is still alive. Blessed One, please dispel (the pain) well! Please avert (the pain)! Please make a mudra! Please bind with a thread! Ananda, therefore, listen well and thoroughly, and keep it in mind, and I will declare. Tadyathā: Hara, Mahāgāre, Ghasaravati, Dhara Dhari, Dhāraṇi, Tsora Tsora, Ṇikarotati, Kottasamādhini, Samara Saraṇi, Saraṇakotamati, Sambhave, Bhavana, Nāgare, Bhādanī, Sādānitī Svāhā. Ananda, if you recite this Dharani mantra fifty-two times and untie fifty-two knots, it will harm the hearts of all those who cause forgetfulness and all spirits. Done by all demons.
