At one time, the Blessed One was dwelling in Lhasamālabu, together with the great Yaksha general Vajrapāṇi. Then, the lord of the gods, Indra, went to where the Blessed One was, and having arrived, he bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One and sat down to one side. Having sat down to one side, the lord of the gods, Indra, said this to the Blessed One: Blessed One, when I go to the battlefield to fight, do you know that I am defeated by the illusions, vidyā-mantras, secret mantras, and medicines of the Asuras? Blessed One, in order to take care of us, to have compassion for us, and to completely destroy and utterly defeat the illusions, vidyā-mantras, secret mantras, and medicines of the Asuras, please teach the great secret mantra of great victory well. Then, the Blessed One said this to the lord of the gods, Indra: Kauśika, it is so. When fighting with the Asuras, being defeated by vidyā-mantras, secret mantras, and medicines, it is so.
