The explanation of the earth is as follows: In this life, one obtains three certainties in one's mind: thinking of taking essence from meaningless enjoyments; hoping to abandon the lower realms and attain the heavens or the ten bhumis; and hoping to do good deeds and abandon miserliness. At the time of death, one obtains three appearances: remembering the good deeds, remembering the Buddha, and offering lamps oneself, thinking of giving alms later. Also, at the time of death, one obtains four appearances: seeing the sun and moon, the retinue of gods, and the Buddha in front, and seeing oneself respectfully joining one's palms to them. At the time of death, one's memory does not decline and one does not become deluded, and one is born as a god in the Heaven of Thirty-Three. Then, after the end of that life, one is born as a human, meets the appearance of a Buddha, remembers past lives, goes forth, and makes offerings to the Buddha. In all lifetimes, one is born into a good family, is beautiful in form, and no one has evil thoughts towards one. Illness, suffering, and bad dreams do not occur. One obtains four kinds of complete purity: purity of body, abandoning the four roots and the five kinds of alcohol; purity of speech, abandoning the four: lying, slander, harsh words, and idle talk; purity of mind, abandoning covetousness, malice, and wrong views; abandoning heedlessness and alcohol; and honoring the Buddhas and Shravakas. Also, one obtains eight dharmas that one will desire: the eye of flesh, the divine eye, unbroken morality, a heavenly body, leisure and endowments, pleasing the appearance of a Buddha, the kingdom of a Chakravartin, Indra, and the body of Brahma. Also, one obtains eight benefits: the immeasurable fearlessness of the Buddha, miraculous powers, morality, samadhi, wisdom, liberation, knowing the minds of sentient beings, and entering immeasurable samadhi. This is also the instruction: For those who wish to attain the state of a Pratyekabuddha, offering lamps as large as Mount Meru in all directions to the Pratyekabuddhas for hundreds of kalpas is less meritorious than offering a single blade of grass by those who wish to attain enlightenment. The merit of offering lamps to the Buddha, focusing on the Buddha for the sake of attaining Buddhahood, is that on the stupa of the Tathagata, one step of the stupa is illuminated for a short time like a flash of lightning.

The merit of that cannot be explained by the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. With unwavering faith and reverence, having faith in the Buddha, making a small lamp, or visualizing the stupa of the Buddha as a staircase, or visualizing the stupa while slightly closing the eyes, that merit cannot be explained by anyone other than the Buddha; it is immeasurable, thus it is said. Those prose passages are a summary of the meaning of the Sutra of Offering Lamps. Furthermore, in the Sutra Requested by King Clear, it is also said: By offering a lamp for an unparalleled offering, eyes like open blue lotuses, clear and beautiful, with long and beautiful eyes, possessing the immaculate eyes of the gods. Thus and so forth it is said. Offering directly to the Buddha, and offering with visualization even though the Buddha is not present, the merit is the same, thus it is said. To dispel the obstacles that enter the lamp: On top of a lit lamp, place a small white cake with its head downwards, and recite Oṃ Amṛte Hūṃ Phaṭ (藏文:ཨོཾ་ཨ་མྲྀ་ཏེ་ཧཱུྃ་ཕཊ,梵文天城体:ओम् अमृते हुं फट्,梵文罗马拟音:oṃ amṛte hūṃ phaṭ,汉语字面意思:嗡,甘露,吽,啪) many times, with that small white cake head downwards, recite the mantra to the lamp, and sprinkle mustard seeds, and from then on, obstacles will not enter, thus it is said. Although the outer, inner, and secret aspects of the lamp are explained in the peaceful and wrathful lamps, etc., these benefits spoken of in the sutra are definitely the benefits of this outer lamp alone. Thus, A-ra-ga quickly compiled and wrote this. May it be auspicious! ! Compiled and published by the Ancient Book Restoration Room of Nangchen (Nangchen County), Angang Gongqiao Culture, Exoteric and Esoteric Dharma Increasing Continent Monastery in Upper Kham. Briefly stating the benefits of lamps.
