The Tenth: Explanation of the Three Obscurations The Tenth: Explanation of the Three Obscurations The Tenth: When explaining the three obscurations, the sutra says: Among the three obscurations—the obscuration of karma, the obscuration of afflictions, and the obscuration of maturation—killing one's mother, killing one's father, killing an arhat, causing dissension in the sangha, and drawing blood from the body of a Tathagata with malicious intent, these five inexpiable karmas, which only cause one to be born in hell in the next life and cannot be interrupted or separated by other karmas or destinations, are the obscuration of karma. Very strong afflictions are the obscuration of afflictions. Among these, there are two types of afflictions: strong and intense. The first is that which arises continuously, that is, from small to medium, from medium to large, arising without interruption, so that there is no opportunity to abandon it with antidotes, and therefore it is considered the obscuration of afflictions. (The second is) that which arises intensely, but because it is easy to abandon, it is not included among the three obscurations. The three lower realms, mindless beings, and those born in the north where the sound is unpleasant, are the obscuration of maturation, because they are the result of being thrown by previous karma. Therefore, obscurations are considered to be of three types, because they obstruct and hinder the noble path and the virtues that lead to the noble path, such as becoming warm. So, wouldn't it be the case that the noble path would not arise in those who have great afflictions, such as Little Path, Angulimala, and Gawa? For them, as long as those obscurations have not been purified, the path will not arise, but when it arises, there will be no great afflictions. Furthermore, if the inexpiable karmas that obstruct the noble path and its preparatory path are the obscuration of karma, then the three lower realms, the Great Brahma, the absorption of non-discrimination, mindless beings, those born from eggs, those born from moisture, becoming female, meat-eaters, etc., and the karmas that lead to the attainment of the eighth existence, would also become the obscuration of karma, because those born in these places will not generate the virtues of the noble path and the preparatory path, and the noble ones
