Please protect us from all fears and unfavorable circumstances. For this reason, please bless us. Please embrace us in all lifetimes without separation. Recite this three times. At that time, rays of light emanate from the objects of refuge, touching oneself and all sentient beings, purifying all karmic and afflictive obscurations, thinking that they have been purified. Finally, the objects of refuge also transform into light, dissolving into oneself and all sentient beings, generating a strong devotion, thinking that one has been blessed. Thereafter, thinking that the virtuous roots of taking refuge will become the cause for sentient beings to attain Buddhahood: I take refuge in the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha until enlightenment. By the merit of my generosity and other virtues, may I attain Buddhahood for the benefit of all beings. Recite this three times, which is also generating the mind of enlightenment. If refuge and generating the mind are condensed, that is sufficient. If done in sections, it will also be complete and perfect. If one wishes to elaborate on generating the mind, from "I take refuge in the Three Jewels" to "May I attain Buddhahood for the benefit of all beings," recite three times, taking the entering mind of enlightenment. Then, may all sentient beings have happiness and the causes of happiness. If they have it, how wonderful! I will make them have it. May all sentient beings be free from suffering and the causes of suffering. If they are free, how wonderful! I will make them free. May all sentient beings never be separated from the happiness without suffering. If they are not separated, how wonderful! I will make them not separated. May all sentient beings be free from the two, near and far, attachment and aversion, and abide in equanimity. If they abide, how wonderful! I will make them abide. Recite this three times, meditating on the four immeasurables. If condensed, do as before up to "May it become." Performing the refuge ritual in this way is based on performing it with the ritual. However, in general, during times of going, staying, sitting, and lying down, if one has a strong thought of remembering the Three Jewels, even without reciting the words, it also becomes refuge. Third, the precepts: Having taken refuge in the Buddha, one should rely on him and not ultimately take refuge in worldly gods and spirits.

Do not rely on others. Having taken refuge in the Dharma, respect even a single verse of the Dharma, and abandon harming sentient beings. Having taken refuge in the Sangha, respect even those who merely hold the appearance of renunciants. Do not befriend those who are non-Buddhists or who do not respect the Three Jewels. One should learn to treat representations of body, speech, and mind with reverence, and to offer the first portion of what one eats and drinks. It is also very meaningful to take refuge with the aim of pacifying the illnesses and demonic obstacles of the patron. In short, whether for one's own benefit or that of others, it is good to slightly alter the wording after taking refuge, or to do it as before. This was written by the Shakya monk named Shedup at the urging of the mantra-holder and faithful Ngawang Dorje, who earnestly requested, "Please write something like this, and I will have it carved into a block print." May this also benefit countless sentient beings! Auspicious! The visualization sequence of taking refuge, opening the door to liberation.
