The stages of refuge, opening the door to liberation. The stages of refuge, opening the door to liberation. A treatise called "The Stages of Refuge, Opening the Door to Liberation" is presented. Namo Ratna Trayaya (藏文,梵文天城体,梵文罗马拟音,汉语字面意思:Homage to the Triple Gem). Here, a simple practice of taking refuge is explained in three points: the necessity and benefits of taking refuge, the objects and manner of taking refuge, and the precepts after taking refuge. First: The gateway to entering the Buddha's teachings is taking refuge in the Triple Gem. Therefore, to extract the essence from this basis, one must first take refuge in the Triple Gem. Moreover, to be included among Buddhist practitioners, one must take refuge in them. For one's actions to become Buddhist practices, one must also take refuge in them. Benefits: These include entering the Buddhist path, increasing merit upon taking vows, exhausting karmic obscurations, liberation from the lower realms, completing accumulations, being difficult to harm, accomplishing goals, attaining enlightenment, and other great benefits, as explained in the sutras. Second: The objects of refuge are the Triple Gem and their retinue. Worldly deities are only objects of temporary hope, not ultimate refuge. Although powerful worldly deities may fulfill some temporary wishes, they cannot accomplish the ultimate benefit. Therefore, the Buddhas, having exhausted faults and possessing inconceivable qualities, are worthy of refuge because they have great compassion, the ability to benefit others, and the desire to do so. The sacred Dharma, which is truly taught, is also worthy of refuge, and the noble Sangha who practice it are also worthy of refuge. The details should be learned elsewhere. There are two ways to take refuge: intention and ritual. First, one takes refuge with the intention of temporarily pacifying one's own illnesses and evil spirits, with the aim of escaping the lower realms, with the aim of escaping the suffering of samsara, and with the aim of liberating all sentient beings from the suffering of the lower realms and samsara. Among these intentions, the latter is more excellent than the former.

The actual thought of refuge is: From the bottom of your heart, believe that the Three Jewels have the power to save you from all sufferings, and whatever happiness or suffering arises, you must explain with an open mind that "You know." Second, although there are many different versions of the ritual, both elaborate and concise, here it is done for the sake of easy entry: Lord of a hundred families, Great Vajradhara, Secret, Terrifying, etc., assembly of yidam deities, In an instant in the sky in front, Invite to be seated on a lotus seat. Having become the protector of all sentient beings, Deity who destroys the forces of the hordes of demons, Knowing that all things are completely pure, Please come to this place, Blessed One, with your retinue. Those who dwell in the pure realms of the ten directions, Root and lineage lamas, yidams, Three Jewels, Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Hearers, Solitary Realizers, and Dharma Protectors, Invite to come and dwell in the sky in front. Saying this, visualize Vajradhara surrounded by the assembly of yidam deities, and the objects of refuge such as Shakyamuni Buddha, Maitreya, Manjushri, and Avalokiteshvara actually coming and dwelling in the sky. At this time, if you wish, you can do the seven-branch offering from "As many as exist" to "Dedicate to Great Enlightenment." Alternatively, you can offer with "Om Guru Sarva Buddha Bodhi Sattva Sapariwara Argham" to "Sparsha Pratitsa Svaha." Then, thinking that all sentient beings, including your mother, etc., surround you, doing so will be especially beneficial. Together with them, in one voice: I and all sentient beings take refuge in the lama. I take refuge in the Buddha. I take refuge in the Dharma. I take refuge in the Sangha. Recite the four refuges, one set or three to a hundred thousand times, as much as possible, and at the end recite: I take refuge in the deities of the yidam mandala and their retinues. I take refuge in the glorious protectors, the Dharma-protecting guardians who possess the eye of wisdom. Also recite the six refuges as much as possible. Then, I prostrate to and take refuge in the lama and the Three Jewels. May you protect me and samsara and the lower realms.
