The Biography of the Bodhisattva Shantideva The Biography of the Bodhisattva Shantideva The biography of the Bodhisattva Shantideva is known as the seven wonderful stories, namely: pleasing the supreme deity, the magnificent prosperity of Nalanda, the cessation of disputes, the wondrous one, the beggar, and the subduing of the heretical king. Among them, first, in the southern country called Good Wheel, the son of King Good Armor, named Shanti Armor, was born. In his youth, he studied many sciences, and in particular, he requested a sadhana of Manjushri's Sharp Sword from a certain Kussulu, and through practice, he saw the face of the deity. Soon after, his father passed away, and the night before he was to be crowned king, he dreamed that the venerable one was sitting on the throne where he himself was to sit the next day, saying: Son, this seat is mine, I am your spiritual friend, it is not appropriate for you and I to sit on the same seat. When he woke up, he knew that he could not take the throne, so he fled to Nalanda and took ordination before the leader of the five hundred panditas, Shengtianshen, and was named Shantideva. He listened to the Dharma of the inner conduct of the noble ones and abided by it, and composed profound treatises, but his outer conduct was unknown to others except for eating, sleeping, and walking. Therefore, he was called Busuku the Third, and others, judging by his outer conduct, thought that the work of an ordained person was the three wheels, but this person did not conform to any of them, so they thought that he should not enjoy the offerings of faith and should be expelled. They also thought, if we take turns reciting the sutras, he will surely leave on his own. So, they assigned him to recite the sutras, but he said he could not. After reporting to the abbot, the abbot said: You should assign him yourself. After assigning him, he agreed to recite. Some people wondered what kind of person he was, and with doubts in their hearts, they set up a high Dharma seat in the midst of the assembly in order to test him. Then, in an imperceptible way, he pressed down on the seat with his hand and ascended, and most people became doubtful. Then, he asked: Should I recite what has been recited before, or what has not been recited? He requested to recite what had not been recited. The Compendium of Trainings is vast, the Compendium of Sutras is small, the words are concise and the meaning is vast, the Bodhicitta.
