The Biography of Master Simha Bhadra The Biography of Master Simha Bhadra In particular, the biography of Master Simha Bhadra is as follows: Once, in the east, in a place called the Simhalengka Forest, there was a tree spirit residing in a large tree. A herdsman from that area passed away, and his wife, who was beautiful, went to herd the cattle. The tree spirit desired her and had intercourse with her, and a special son was born, named Gopala. His father gave him a precious jewel, and through the merit of the jewel, he was able to rule over the entire earth, and thus he built Nalanda. One of his lesser queens, in order to control the king, consulted a Brahmin master for magic. The master took medicine from the snowy mountains, consecrated it, and gave it to a servant girl. The servant girl slipped and fell, and the medicine was carried away by the water, gradually flowing into the ocean. The Naga king obtained it and consumed it, and thus the Naga king gained the power to rule the ocean. Meeting the queen, she gave birth to a son, Glorious Dharmapala. When offering sacrifices on an auspicious day, a snake's head appeared, and the king was very angry and prepared to punish him. At that moment, he showed a ring, and the king saw the Naga script, so he again honored and raised him. He wanted to build a temple that was more extraordinary than other temples, so he asked a seer. The seer said: Make seedlings from the cloth of monks and Brahmins, take butter from the houses of the king and merchants, take a bowl from the hermitage of ascetics, light a butter lamp, place it in front of the yidam, and pray. The emanation of Dharmapala will throw away the bowl, and build there. Doing as instructed, a crow came and threw the bowl into the lake, and he was very disappointed. At night, the Naga king appeared as a five-headed snake, saying: I am your father, I will dry up the lake and let you begin building. Hold a great sacrifice every seven days. Doing so, after twenty-one days, the lake dried up, and the temple of Odantapuri was built. That king had four sons: a king, a pandita, an accomplished one, and a king who committed evil deeds. Fearing that the last son would be troubled by wealth, he gave him a jewel. He had a son named Devapala.
