Fourth, advising both to accomplish the meaning of Dharma. Fourth, advising both to accomplish the meaning of Dharma. Fourth is, regarding such hearing and thinking entering the path, with the words, "Those with discipline, hearing, and thought, should diligently engage in meditation," it is explained that pure discipline is the foundation. As the Samadhiraja Sutra says: "However much of the Dharma is awakened, if one is arrogant with hearing and does not protect discipline, breaking discipline and falling into evil destinies, much hearing cannot protect them." Thus it is said. Even with much hearing and discipline, it must be connected with thinking and meditation. As the Sutra of the Monk Who Abides in the Dharma, called Bhikshu, says: "Not relying on meditation, but only with the combination of hearing and thinking, one does not abide in the Dharma; not relying on hearing and thinking, but only with the combination of meditation, one does not abide in the Dharma; but relying on both, abiding in both, then one abides in the Dharma." Thus it is said. The Ornament of the Sutras also says: "Thus, whatever meditation of a yogi is, it is not meaningless; whatever teaching of the Sugata is, it is not meaningless; if one could see the meaning with just hearing, then meditation would become meaningless; if one could enter meditation without hearing, then the teaching would become meaningless." Thus it is said. Therefore, one should first protect discipline as the antidote to breaking discipline, which is the basis or cause of many sufferings. Then, one should strive to purify afflictions. The order of that is as Shantideva said: "One should cultivate patience, seek much hearing, then dwell in the forest, diligently practice samadhi, and meditate on the unattractive and so on." Thus it is said. Among these, patience is needed first, because without it, one would inevitably feel weary, and therefore not enter hearing. If there is no much hearing, one will not know the means of meditation to abandon afflictions, therefore one should seek much hearing. Even if one knows the Dharma through much hearing, if one acts like a blind person, samadhi will not arise. As the Moon Lamp Sutra says: "Even if one speaks with words that accord with the Dharma, anger and disbelief, speaking loudly, this is the Dharma of children; if one truly knows its meaning, then one will not doubt." One should abandon gain, respect, desire, attachment, and association with children, and in the forest with deer, birds, and trees.

The earth makes no pleasing proclamation, with those comforts of companionship, when will we dwell together? This shows the secluded forest. If one does not strive to abandon distraction, one will not enter into meditative equipoise. Therefore, one must strive for meditative equipoise, and its result is the purification of afflictions, so one should meditate on the unattractive and so forth. Even if one hears much, if it is separated from practice, that is a great fault. As asked by the Fierce One: If one has hearing and has obtained this leisure and endowment, but does not subdue the mind attached to gain and so forth, then that becomes the only deception of the world with the gods. Also, from the Heap of Jewels: Light Protector, it is like a person being carried away by the great ocean water, dying of thirst. Light Protector, some renunciates and Brahmins learn many doctrines and become fully aware, but do not eliminate craving for desire, do not eliminate craving for hatred, do not eliminate craving for delusion, those are carried away by the ocean of Dharma, and die of the thirst of afflictions, and will go to bad destinies. Therefore, for someone like me who only talks and has no practice, there is no essence, so thinking about the meaning and practice is important. From the Sutra Encouraging Higher Intention: Being full of hearing, one does not become respectful, attached to various debating words, becomes talkative and without mindfulness, these are the faults of liking to talk. The inner mind becomes very distant from the inner mind, and the body and mind are not well subdued, becoming arrogant and having many knots, these are the faults of liking to talk. Children's ability to think about the holy Dharma greatly diminishes, the mind becomes inflexible, very rough, and far from calm abiding and insight, these are the faults of liking to talk. Always without respect for the lamas, but creating delight in defiled words, dwelling in the meaningless, wisdom diminishes, these are the faults of liking to talk. That one is not respected by the hosts of gods, and at that time desire does not arise for that one, having fallen from their own correct knowledge, these are the faults of liking to talk. Those who have many bodies manifestly, those wise ones
