The first includes the benefits of listening, explaining, and both combined, totaling three. First is the benefit of listening. The *Bodhisattva Pitaka Sutra* states: \"Through listening, one knows all dharmas; through listening, one turns away from sins; through listening, one abandons the meaningless; through listening, one attains Nirvana.\" Its meaning is explained in the *Commentary on Reasoning* as: These four lines explain in sequence that by understanding the tenets of inner and outer schools, one understands what to accept and reject; by obtaining the training in discipline, one turns away from misconduct; by obtaining the training in mind, one abandons meaningless desires; and by obtaining the training in wisdom, and relying on it to manifest the exhaustion of defilements, one attains Nirvana, these are four benefits. Or, obtaining the correct view, transcending karma and afflictions, and transcending the pervasive afflictions of birth, these are four benefits. Or, gaining faith in the Dharma assembly, ordaining, guarding the doors of the senses, avoiding harm by being free from attachment to desires, and realizing the truth to attain Nirvana, these are also four explanations. The *Commentary on Reasoning* states that the Bhagavan proclaimed five benefits of listening to the Dharma: what has not been heard will be heard, what has been heard will be purified, doubts will be abandoned, views will be made upright, and the words and meanings will be deeply understood with wisdom. Its meaning is to hear extensively, to make it clear and without impurities, to obtain certainty, to understand correctly, and to realize the truth, these are five benefits. The first two completely purify the wisdom of listening, the middle two completely purify the wisdom of thinking, and the last shows that the wisdom of meditation will also be completely purified. Furthermore, there are five benefits of listening to the sacred Dharma: to make the uncomprehended comprehended, to abandon incorrect grasping, to determine what is uncertain, to make what has been determined the essence, and to train the eye of the wisdom of the noble ones. Furthermore, water produces five benefits: soaking rice and so on." } ] ============================================================

Water makes things cool, removes dirt from bodies, clothes, and vessels, alleviates the complete burning of the body in summer, quenches intense thirst, and causes grass, grains, and forests to grow and flourish. Similarly, generating faith in the Buddha's teachings cools the lineage of suffering, removes the dirt of immoral conduct, alleviates the complete burning of desire, pacifies the thirst for rebirth, and causes the roots of qualities conducive to enlightenment, grains, and forests to grow and flourish. These five benefits should also be understood as originating from gaining faith and the three trainings associated with karma. Therefore, for these five benefits, one should listen to the Buddha's teachings with desire and reverence. Fire has four functions: burning, cooking, warming, and illuminating. Similarly, the fire of the Buddha's teachings burns away the afflictions of those whose minds are ripe, ripens the roots of virtue in those whose minds are not ripe, causes those who delight in existence to become weary, and for those who have become weary, are consumed by doubt, and have entered a wrong path, it illuminates the path and what is not the path. Therefore, one should listen to the Dharma with reverence. One should rely on five foundations for a comfortable entry point: to be without impurity, to completely pacify heat, to completely pacify thirst, to experience the joy of play, and to go from this shore to the other shore. Similarly, the Buddha's teachings are a comfortable entry point: to be without the impurity of immoral conduct, to completely pacify the complete burning of desire, to pacify rebirth, to experience the joy of play with special qualities such as contemplation, clairvoyance, immeasurables, and liberation, and to go from this shore of the perishable collection to the other shore of Nirvana.
