Thus it is said. Furthermore, even those born as humans experience the suffering of birth, aging, sickness, and death; the suffering of those who have possessions being unable to be content and finding it difficult to protect them; the suffering of those who have nothing being poor and finding it difficult to acquire; the suffering of fearing separation from beloved friends; the suffering of fearing encountering enemies, and the suffering of the encounter itself. Asuras also have the suffering of fighting and strife. Except for the five Pure Abodes, most of the god realms also suffer because they will fall to the lower realms. Thus, wherever one is born in the three realms, there is no happiness. In such a cycle of existence, whether as gods or humans, or in the various forms of life such as hell beings, hungry ghosts, and animals, birth is not a good thing; birth is a vessel of many harms, please understand. Thus it is said. Therefore, wherever one is born in the six realms, it is suffering. What saves us from that suffering is the Three Jewels. If we take refuge in the Three Jewels, we will be saved from the fears of this life and all immediate harms, and we will be saved from the suffering of the lower realms in the next life and the suffering of eternal samsara. In this world, too, our wishes will be fulfilled, and ultimately we will have the benefit of accomplishing the welfare of the Buddhas and sentient beings. Dagpo Rinpoche said: Taking refuge in the Three Jewels is important at the beginning because it surpasses ordinary people and non-Buddhists; it is important in the middle because it saves us from the suffering of samsara and the lower realms; it is important at the end because it causes us to attain the fruit of the three kayas. The Seventy Verses on Refuge state: Whoever takes refuge in the Three, That is the root of the eight vows. The Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, Are the refuge of those who desire liberation. Thus it is said. In order to obtain such benefits, and for this purpose, think of taking refuge in the Three Jewels, and meditate in this way: In the space in front of you, on a throne of eight lions, on a lotus, sun, and moon cushion, is the Victorious Shakyamuni Buddha, his body the color of pure gold, one face and two arms, his right hand in the earth-touching mudra, his left hand in the meditation mudra, possessing the thirty-two major marks and eighty minor marks of a great being, radiating immeasurable light. He is with the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, the victorious ones of the ten directions and their retinues.

Meditate on being surrounded by warriors. First, it is very important to accumulate merit towards the Three Jewels. By accumulating merit, happiness is attained. Therefore, people should accumulate merit, and accumulate it again and again, starting from this very day. As it is said, offer all the offerings of the world and all bodily enjoyments with faith and reverence. Think: I request the Buddha as my teacher, the Dharma as the path, and the Sangha as companions on the path, and imitate them. May all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas residing in the ten directions heed me. May the Sangha heed me... (repeat three times) After that, may the teacher heed me. Note: From this time onwards, until I reach the essence of enlightenment, I (name) go for refuge to the Buddha, the foremost of the two-legged beings; I go for refuge to the Dharma, the foremost of the detached ones; I go for refuge to the Sangha, the foremost of the assemblies. This is the method, it is good! Having thus gone for refuge to the Three Jewels, one must learn eleven precepts, namely, the five common precepts: one should remember the qualities of the Three Jewels and learn to take refuge; one should always strive to make offerings to the Three Jewels; even for the sake of life, kingdom, or reward, one should not abandon the Three Jewels; whatever sickness or suffering may arise, one should not seek other means; wherever one goes, one should prostrate to the deities of that direction, make offerings, and practice taking refuge. The three special precepts are: having gone for refuge to the Buddha, one should not prostrate to other worldly deities; having gone for refuge to the Dharma, one should not harm sentient beings; having gone for refuge to the Sangha, one should not associate with non-Buddhists. The three subsequent precepts are: one should cultivate respect for the representations of the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, and abandon disrespect. It is very important to protect these precepts. Having these precepts, one must generate Bodhicitta. The necessity of generating Bodhicitta is that it surpasses the attainment of liberation in the Hearer Vehicle's self-peace, and enters one into the ranks of Bodhisattvas, entering the state of Buddhahood. Thus it is said. May all sentient beings, as infinite as the sky, have happiness and be free from suffering with loving kindness.

Thereby, may we attain the enlightened state of a Buddha, complete with compassion. For the sake and purpose of equanimity, free from bias, may we employ our body, speech, and mind in virtuous deeds. Generate the intention to meditate on the Great Compassionate One. From the state of emptiness, upon a lotus and moon seat. Visualize a single white seed syllable HRIH (Tibetan: ཧྲཱིཿ, Sanskrit Devanagari: ह्रीः, Sanskrit Romanization: hrīḥ, Literal Chinese meaning: Sha). From that HRIH, radiate light. Make offerings to the Buddhas. Purify the sins and obscurations of all sentient beings. Transform into the assembly of deities of the Great Compassionate One. The light rays gather back and dissolve into the HRIH. The HRIH melts into light. Oneself becomes Lord Great Compassionate One, like the sun rising over a snow mountain. One face, four arms. The first two hands are joined in prayer at the heart. The lower right hand holds a string of pearls. The lower left hand holds a lotus flower. Seated in the vajra posture. The hair is tied upwards in a matted topknot. Adorned on the head with a silk diadem and five jeweled crests representing the five Buddha families. Adorned with various precious ornaments such as earrings, necklaces, armlets, bracelets, and anklets. On a moon disc at the heart, surrounded by a white HRIH syllable, the mantra OM MANI PADME HUM (Tibetan: ཨོཾ་མ་ཎི་པདྨེ་ཧཱུྃ, Sanskrit Devanagari: ओँ मणि पद्मे हूँ, Sanskrit Romanization: oṃ maṇi padme hūṃ, Literal Chinese meaning: Om! Jewel in the Lotus! Hum!) revolves clockwise, radiating light. All sentient beings, the outer world and its inhabitants, transform into the Great Compassionate One. All sounds become the sound of the six-syllable mantra. All thoughts and perceptions are practiced in the state of union of wisdom and luminosity. By meditating in this way, the body transforms into the Nirmanakaya, speech into the Sambhogakaya, and mind into the Dharmakaya, thereby benefiting all sentient beings. Afterwards, based on this root of virtue, may all sentient beings be born in Sukhavati. And so forth, make dedications. May the ritual called "The Rosary of Jewels: Refuge and Bodhicitta" be virtuous and auspicious! The refuge and bodhicitta of Tishri Sangye Rechen, along with the preliminary visualization and oral instructions, were performed as service to Sangye Rechen, and Kusalupa Shila Ghirti, following the instructions of the lama, has well-arranged it for the sake of the fortunate ones. The Rosary of Jewels: Refuge and Bodhicitta.
