English
of beings and individuals, which is called the characteristic of non-self of material and immaterial phenomena. "Breakdown of speech" means the type of sound made of speech, having attained the state of letters and words. "Appropriated earth elements" are called kamma-born earth elements. "Collision in them" is the connection. "It comes into being with a form and modification by way of its co-arising, and by which it is perceived" is the connection. All four-origin material phenomena within one's own continuum are also sometimes called "appropriated," thus it says, "or indeed, by the four-origin element." Among the two, the basis and the instrument, the mind-born earth element, which occurs as a moving form on the side of the instrument, colliding with the earth element on the side of the basis, collides only with the kamma-born earth element. It is not possible to say that it does not collide with other earth elements, therefore, the word "only" is used here. "And the two modifications" means the two modifications: body modification and speech modification. "How then should it be understood as unmixed?" It says, "And here..." and so on. "And that arrangement of the manner of their collision exists" is the connection. "Of them" refers to the mind-born earth elements. "For the attainment of various sounds" means for the attainment of sounds like 'ka', 'kha', etc. And what was said in the section on body-intimation: "This meaning will become clear in the discussion of the origin of letters above." Making that clear here, it says, "And here..." and so on. "For by that, it is stated in the root commentary" is the connection. "And here" is in the text of the root commentary. "In the earlier part" means in the earlier part of the path of distinct letter production. "By various javana-paths" means by various kinds of javana-path occasions. "Even of the first javana-consciousness... of the first impulsion consciousness arisen in the path of distinct syllabic utterance. The meaning is that its repetition is obtained from the preceding path-moments. And "repetition" is to be understood as a conventional term, as stated below. "Its" refers to the distinct syllable. And it is stated in the grammar texts: "One should utter a long vowel," referring to the five long vowels. In the Mithinda Pañhāpāṭha: "More than a hundred cartloads of rice." A cart full of rice grain is called a rice-cartload. In more than a hundred rice-cartloads. Abhimaññanaṃ is pride. "The rest here is in the manner stated in 'bodily intimation'." That is, it means in the manner stated by "they occur in the continuum of mind-born material qualities that are the cause of movement." Here, however, it should be stated "the aggregates of season-born material qualities occur in the continuum of mind-born sounds that cause vocal differentiation." Therefore, he says, "as far as possible." "The meaning of occurrence" is the meaning of causing going forward and so on, and recitation and so on, to occur. "And here," and so on. "In those devoid of the desire to inform" it should be understood that bodily intimation in going forward and backward and so on, and vocal intimation in reciting suttas and so on, are devoid of the desire to inform others. "In the two informing intimations" refers to the informing bodily intimation and the informing vocal intimation. The former is bodily intimation, and the latter is vocal intimation. Afterwards, it is known only by pure mind-door impulsion, not by five-door impulsion—this is the connection. Having taken it by the eye-consciousness path—this is the connection. "By the bodily intimation path"— this bodily intimation path is to be understood for the intimation of intention by means of grasping with the hand and so on, without making vocal differentiation. Why is this alternative, "it is intimation because it is known by oneself," stated? He says, "for it itself," and so on. "In the middle" refers to the middle of the intimation-grasping path and the intention-grasping path. How are the two meanings, "it intimates intention in the active intimations" and "it is known by oneself," obtained? He says, "but in the two," and so on. This one goes forward, Knowing "this one retreats," they know the act of advancing and the mind generating that act. Even the sound of another's speech, without the desire to make another understand, is "another's speech." And they know the mind of lust. Therefore it is said in the Mūlaṭīkā: Even without the desire to make another understand, the manifestation of advancing, etc., is an intention, a modification co-arising with one's own mind. (La.) Both are simply communication. Regarding modified material forms. "Fit for action" means suitable to be applied in actions like advancing. Non-slowness is called swift activity. "That is its characteristic" is the analysis. "The fitness for action conducive to bodily activity is its characteristic" is the compound. "Elements" means either the great primary elements, or elements like bile and phlegm. The phrase "the arising of water, reckoned as putrid mouth-saliva." "Unbearable burden" means a burden impossible to carry. "That occurs" means bodily lightness occurs. The elements present in the body make it stiff - this is the context. "One who kills violently" is an āmarika. The letter 'd' is an augment. A band of robbers plundering villages and towns. Beset by fear of them. "Turning around" means turning around having become deformed. "It becomes fundamental" means when unwholesome things are consumed, it arises first. It is either excessively cold, or excessively hot. It is said that when that arises, all other arisings occur. "These three kinds of material forms are special modes of the material body." Thus, therefore, it is called modified material form - this is the connection. Regarding characteristic material forms. "Accumulation" means going to the state of being accumulated. "From the beginning" means at the beginning. "From above" means in the upper part. "Accumulation" means accumulation at the beginning. "Further accumulation" means accumulation again and again. "By way of filling the duration" means by way of filling one's existence for a long time, even a hundred years or a thousand years. "By that method" means by that method stated, having included origination and growth, without considering the various meanings of the prefix. And of each one, the present continuity. There, among mind-born material forms, of in-breaths and out-breaths, or The arising, growth, and continuation of letters, such as those of the hand or door, are seen. Likewise, the various successions of forms arising from various minds. The arising, growth, and continuation of various successions of forms that cause pleasure and pain, due to the diversity of postures in season-born forms, are seen. Likewise, the various successions of forms arising in the body from external contact with stumps, thorns, etc., from contact with cold, heat, etc., from contact with wind, sun, etc., and also forms like eye diseases. In nutriment-born forms, the successions of even and uneven forms arising in the body due to the diversity of nutriment. "This is the method" is the illustrative method for external continuities. By this, it illustrates the arising, growth, and continuation of the continuities of beings, the continuities of hands and feet, etc., and the continuities of hair and body hair, etc., in the internal continuity. "Aging" is the decline from a fresh state. In the Pāli text: "The alteration of what is established" means another kind, otherwise. The state of being otherwise is alteration. By this, change is stated, either by way of old age or by way of various diseases and afflictions. "Likewise, due to the connection with the distinction of states" means that the form of birth itself arises at the beginning. After that, it itself grows. After that, it itself continues. Thus, due to the connection with the distinction of states. Therefore, it says "that itself," etc. "Connects" means it makes a connection. In the summary verses, etc., they are easily understood. "And here, the latter," etc. "The mere state established by convention" means that designations such as "person," "being," "self," "soul," etc., are merely established by convention. They are not established by inherent nature. For they are called "established by convention" because the great multitude has agreed and spoken of a "person" as existing based on the five aggregates. But they are not established by inherent nature. Therefore, it is established that there is no such thing as a "person" in the discourse of the Noble Ones. But these forms, being established by inherent nature, are established as existing even in the discourse of the Noble Ones. Therefore, it says "by such," etc. "Established by the course of pure phenomena" means that the earth element is a pure phenomenon. it is. It goes to arising, it goes to decay, it goes to dissolution. Therefore, its arising, its decay, its dissolution are established by the pure course of phenomena. Thus, the ultimate characteristic of these characteristic-forms, established by the pure course of phenomena, should be understood. And similarly for the two kinds of intimation, for the three kinds of altered forms, and for the delimiting form. And just as for these forms, so too for Nibbāna, the ultimate characteristic, established by the pure course of phenomena, exists. For defiling phenomena, when not cultivated on the noble path, they continue to arise in the cycle of existence. But when cultivated, they go to non-arising, to cessation. Therefore, the non-arising and cessation of defiling phenomena are established by the pure course of phenomena. Thus, the ultimate characteristic of Nibbāna, established by the pure course of phenomena, should be understood. "There is, monks, the unborn, the unbecome" — this Sutta should also be mentioned here.
