"Of these" means of thoughts and mental factors. In the Vibhāvanī text. "Due to its proximity" means due to its proximity to that rebirth. "Or by taking that" means by taking the conjunction, by the word "conjunction" itself. "Occurrence of objects" means the occurrence of objects such as kamma and kamma-signs, by way of their appearing at the doors. "Mar are accomplished in their arising, thus, they are accomplished in the javana-impulses in the arising of death. By this, it is shown that the arrangement for the arising of death is primarily concerned with javana-impulses, not primarily concerned with cuti-consciousness. For in that arrangement, there is no statement about the occurrence of an object in that cuti-consciousness. It is only in the javana-impulses. But that cuti-consciousness is accomplished by the patisandhi-consciousness, which is established at the beginning of that existence. "Of those" means of those outside the thought-process. "Become" means appear. "From that" means from this. "To be gone" means to be reborn by way of taking rebirth. "They go" means they proceed. "Across" means across. "Bent" means gone, proceeded, or extended. "By similarity of birth" means by the state of being of similar birth by way of the animal realm. "They mix" means they mingle. "From the accumulation of happiness" means from the collection of happiness. "They shine" means they illuminate. "Having done thus" means having made the meaning of this statement, the connection is that the higher devas are called asuras. "Vepacitti's blows and so forth" means the devas and asuras like Vepacitti, the lord of asuras, and Paharada, the lord of asuras. "Opponents of devas" means opponents of the Tavatimsa devas. "Similar to devas" means similar to the Tavatimsa devas. "Vemanika petas" means petas named Vemanika. "Vinipatika" means those of the unfortunate deva-class named Vinipatika. Their occurrence will become clear in the phrase 'and of the Vinipatika asuras' above. "They too" means the beings in the Lokantarika hell. "Kalakañcika petas" means petas named Kalakañcika. Thus, the connection is that Vessabhu and others, the Yama kings, mentioned in the Kathavatthu Pali, are not. Vessabhu, Notti, Soma, Yama, and Vessavana, these are the kings of the departed. "Kingship" means the state of being a king, the duty of a king. And those who are called yakkhas and rakkhasas, the connection is that they act and wander. "Doers of cruel deeds" means doers of fierce deeds. "In Revati's mansion" means in the story of Revati's mansion. "From this" means from the human world, or from the happy existence. Among them, there are also yakkhas and rakkhasas who are earth-dwelling, Also those dwelling in the sky. "Various kinds of actions" means thirty-two kinds of deeds to be done. The connection is also with the hell-guards. "Of the three" means of the three planes of misery. Plane of misery. "Their minds are uplifted" or "their minds are abundant," a two-fold analysis. "Uplifted" means risen. "Abundant" means extensive. Why are their minds very sharp? It is said, "of the perfected," and so on. Because it was said in the previous sentence in a way common to infinite world-systems, "in this" and so on is said again. There is nothing to be said. The meaning is that the Omniscient Buddhas and others arise right here. "They grasp" means they grasp by making it more. "Heroes" means those whose minds are heroic in evil and wholesome deeds. "Mindful" means those with extensive mindfulness. "Here is the holy life" means the existence of the holy life, which consists of fulfilling the three trainings, right here. "In customary laws" means in the customs of the world. "Dhataraṭṭha" means King Dhataraṭṭha. Similarly in "Virūḷhaka" and so on. "Dwelling in fragrant trees" means residing in fragrant trees. "Kumbhaṇḍas" means the earth is called "ku". The analysis is: those whose treasures of jewels have gone into the earth. "Dānavarakkhasas" means rākṣasas named Dānava by the meaning of being descendants of the divine daughter named Danu. "They obstruct" means they cause hindrance, thus "obstructors". "Of faded form" means of deteriorated complexion. "Having done base deeds" means having come after doing base, evil deeds. The connection is that some are born as Gandhappiyas. The connection is that Gandhappiyas are also called Yoginīs, and also called Juṇhās. "On well-marked nights" means on well-known nights. It means on Uposatha nights. "At the time of being intent on pasture" means at the time of wandering for pasture. "By the meaning of radiance" means by the meaning of shining. "Vasundharā" means holding wealth and riches. The analysis is: they are Vasundharā, and devas, and yakkhas. "They are called Nāgas" means the intention is that in the Pāli, they are included among Nāgas. "Which" means which b Earth-deity-yakṣa beings. "By which" means by which earth-deity-yakṣa beings. "By way of being devoted to play" means by way of increasing the proclamation and play-activity at the time of the wondrous arising of the Dhamma of Bodhisattas and Buddhas. "And the mantra-words of which" means the mantra-words that are uttered for the purpose of suppression, support, worship, and so on, of which (beings). "Among them" means among those four who are restrained. "By way of being addicted to play" means by way of being a rogue in play. "By way of being addicted to food" means by way of being a rogue in eating and consuming. Soṇa is called a dog. "Beings" means those in hell or hungry ghosts. "And it may be" means "although it may be" is the meaning. "Opportunity for binding" means opportunity for constant connection. "Among those who have come together" means among those who have come in succession. "In the abodes of the king of devas" means in this cosmos, in the Tāvatiṃsa realm, in the abodes of the king of devas, is the intention. "Only in the Pāḷi" means only in the Pāḷi text of the Janavasabha Sutta of the Dīgha Nikāya. They restrain, they control in this place, therefore it is Yāma. "They control" means they cease from quarrels, disputes, and so on, rooted in mutual envy and jealousy, is the meaning. "Because of being associated with that" means because of constantly existing together with that family of powerful devas named Yāma. "They make it subject to their will" means "they fulfill their wish" is what is said. "In front" means in the place facing. That place, however, is called a high place, therefore it says "in a high place." In phrases like "Sahassa Brahmā," it is intended in the commentary that he is named Sahassa (a thousand) because he pervades a thousand cosmos-worlds with the radiance of his own body. Family deities are deities worshipped through family tradition. "They attend" means having made divine objects and divine garlands in appropriate places, going there from time to time, they worship with perfumes, garlands, and so on, they bow, they praise, they pray for boons, is the meaning. "They become mere attendants" means they become mere attendants, is the intention. "Of someone" means of someone lower. "There" means in those Brahma realms. Again, "there" means on that second level. "Radiance" means of the body. They emerge, they come forth from the limbs and minor limbs. "Immovably established" means it is not shaken like the second plane. Rather, it is immovably established. "Of those" is in the reading "of those speakers." "Brahmapārisajjā" and so on are names not established, thus the connection. "By those of a moving nature" means by those of a trembling nature. "There is fruit of merit from the trembling of the lower planes," this is the connection. "By that of an unmoving nature" means by the jhāna of equanimity, of an unmoving nature, for the fourth planes that arise. "By any obstacle" means by an obstacle like the conflagration of fire. "Even here" means even in this fourth plane. "Due to the variety of life spans" means due to the diversity of the measure of life. "Gross" is said due to the naturally gross nature. Not due to the existence of subtle ones. There is no vexation for these, thus "Avihā" (non-vexing). What is vexation? He says, "The non-spreading of attainment in the works of calm and insight." It means that there is no non-spreading of the mind. "By the eyes of faith, divine, Dhamma, and wisdom" means by the eye of faith, divine eye, Dhamma eye, and wisdom eye. Among these, the eye of faith is here also called the divine eye. "Dhamma eye" is the knowledge of the lower path. "Wisdom eye" is all remaining knowledge together with insight knowledge and review knowledge. "Of beings with form" means of beings having a body of form. "Junior state" means a lesser state. "The rejection of even the Anāgāmi path-attainer" means that the Anāgāmi path arises only for one who cultivates while established in the state of Sakadāgāmī. Not otherwise, thus he says, "by the rejection of Sakadāgāmīs," and so on. The four planes are completed. 144. They enter into another existence by this, thus "okkanti" (entering) is used. "Devoid of a stream" means devoid of the stream of faith. Similarly in the rest. "By the state of āsittaka and so on" means by the state of āsittaka, paṇḍaka, and so on. "By two marks" means by two signs. "Of confused speech" means of mistaken speech. "Of one whose basis is mistaken" here "vatthu" means the basis. The eye is called the base. Because of its defectiveness from the very beginning, the person endowed with it is called one with a defective base. "Of that, of that" means, in the sense of the eye, of such a one. "At the very birth" means, at the time of delivery. "Of the state of wisdom's skillfulness" here, the state of being skillful is skillfulness. "Of the skillful one" means, of a person with penetrating knowledge. The analysis is: "He has skillfulness, which is called wisdom." "It is not possible to determine even for those with two or three roots" —this is the connection.
