is not possible. But those terms here that indicate a part of form, unmixed with the immaterial, and a part of consciousness, unmixed with another, are designated here. But these should be understood in terms of the ten bases excluding the mind-base and the dhamma-base, the seventeen elements excluding the dhamma-element, and the seven form-faculties, not in terms of the aggregate of form, etc. Therefore, in the text: "Ten bases, seventeen elements, seven faculties, the non-percipient existence, the one-constituent existence; Lamentation, that which is visible and resistant, the invisible, again, the resistant, grasping," Thus, the summary verse is stated. For by the aggregate of form, only the aggregate of form is included, thus also by the aggregate of feeling, etc., only the aggregate of feeling, etc. And since there is no such thing as these being not included by any bases or elements whatsoever, because of the absence of inclusion and non-inclusion in them, the meaning-determination here occurs only in terms of the bases as stated. This is the characteristic here: that which Being included by the term "aggregate," but not included by the terms "sense-sphere" and "element," or being included by the terms "aggregate" and "sense-sphere," but not included by the term "element," this is called non-inclusion by aggregates, sense-spheres, and elements. How so? By the eye sense-sphere, those things included by inclusion in aggregates, but not included by inclusion in sense-spheres, nor by inclusion in elements, by how many aggregates, sense-spheres, elements are those things not included? Those things are not included by four aggregates, by two sense-spheres, by eight elements. Thus, in the case of the form sense-sphere, etc., in the sense-sphere elements that are objects of sense, and in the sense-sphere elements that are sense faculties, etc., the method of application should be understood. Herein is the method: By the eye sense-sphere, those form-things included by inclusion in aggregates as the form aggregate, but not included by inclusion in sense-spheres and elements by the eye sense-sphere, nor included by the eye element, because the eye sense-sphere and eye element are included in the respective sense-sphere and element of this one eye, all those form-things devoid of the eye sense-sphere are not included by four immaterial aggregates, by two sense-spheres, the eye sense-sphere and the mind sense-sphere, by eight elements, the eye element and the seven consciousness elements. The same method applies above in the case of the form sense-sphere, etc. In this instance, because the eye sense-sphere is included by its own three inclusions in aggregates, sense-spheres, and elements, there is no non-inclusion, and because the non-inclusion by aggregates, etc., is spoken of with "by how many aggregates, etc.?" only of what is distinguished by the three distinguishing features of inclusion and non-inclusion, namely, "included by inclusion in aggregates, not included by inclusion in sense-spheres, not included by inclusion in elements," therefore, its being external along with the immaterial aggregates should be understood. Just as here, the inclusion and non-inclusion is only of the form-things indicated by the eye sense-sphere, not of the eye sense-sphere itself, so too above, in the case of what is indicated by the form sense-sphere, etc., it should be understood as appropriate. But in the remaining cases, by the eye-consciousness element, those things included by inclusion in aggregates, included by inclusion in sense-spheres, included by inclusion in elements, Those things not included, those things are not included by the four aggregates, the eleven sense spheres, the twelve elements. Thus also with the remaining consciousness elements. Among the links of dependent origination, those things due to the state of being without perception… …those things are not included by the four aggregates, the ten sense spheres, the sixteen elements. Those things due to clinging-related phenomena… …those things are not included by the four aggregates, the eleven sense spheres, the seventeen elements. These four instances are unique in sequence, yet the same in essence. There, in the case of eye-consciousness, "by the twelve" means excluding the six consciousness elements, the remaining elements are included by the aggregates and sense spheres, but not included by the element inclusion. Not included by the remaining twelve elements. This method applies also to the remaining consciousness elements. In the second, "by the three sense spheres" means by the sense sphere of form, the sense sphere of phenomena, and the sense sphere of mind. For in the realm of beings without perception, two sense spheres, as the sense sphere of form and the sense sphere of phenomena, are mentioned in the text as the mode of rebirth, but those are included by the aggregates, not included by the sense spheres and elements. The remaining nine sense spheres of form, those are said to be not included by those three, and by the two, the sense sphere of mind and the sense sphere of phenomena. "By the nine elements" means by the element of form, the element of phenomena, together with the seven consciousness elements. In the third, "by the ten" means excluding the sense sphere of form and the sense sphere of phenomena. "By the sixteen" means excluding the element of form and the element of phenomena. The nine gross sense spheres, which are non-manifesting and resistant, those are included by the aggregate inclusion, but not included by the sense sphere and element inclusions, both the sense sphere of form and the sense sphere of phenomena are said to be not included by the remaining sense spheres and elements. In the fourth, "by the eleven" means excluding the sense sphere of touch, because the sense sphere of touch is not included among the sense spheres etc. by clinging-related phenomena. The rest is easily understood. This is the method in the included-by-the-included position. Explanation of the meaning of the not-included-by-the-included position In the not-included-by-the-included position, however, those terms that are by consciousness or by gross form Only a portion of the realm of Dhamma is revealed, Not all of it. Only those are specified. But those are the three aggregates of feeling, etc., The three truths excluding the truth of suffering, The sixteen faculties excluding pleasure and mind, And the fourteen causal conditions In terms of ignorance, formations, contact, feeling, craving, clinging, karma-process, birth, aging, death, sorrow, suffering, grief, and despair. These should be understood, Not the aggregates of form, etc. Therefore, in the commentary: "Three aggregates and so the truths, And sixteen faculties; Fourteen conditions in causal process, Fourteen more above. Thirty-four terms there are, In ten groups; Two are minor intermediate pairs, Eight are major intermediate ones." (Dhātu. aṭṭha. 179) Thus, the summary verse is stated. Here is its characteristic: That which is unincluded by the term "aggregate," But included by the terms "sense-sphere" and "element," The inclusion of that very thing, Distinguished by three qualifiers, With aggregates, etc., is called. How? By the aggregate of feeling, Those things unincluded by aggregate-inclusion, But included by sense-sphere and element-inclusions, By how many aggregates, Sense-spheres, Elements are those things included? Those things, Excluding the unconditioned from the aggregate, Are included by three aggregates, One sense-sphere, One element. Here is the method: By the aggregate of feeling, Nibbāna, Subtle form, Perception and formations, Being unincluded by aggregate-inclusion, Are included by Dhamma sense-sphere and Dhamma element-inclusion. Among them, Nibbāna does not enter aggregate-inclusion, The remaining three enter inclusion by the aggregates of form, perception, and formations. Here, the sense-spheres and elements Should be understood everywhere Only in terms of the Dhamma sense-sphere and Dhamma element, Since the others are impossible. And in these, even Nibbāna enters inclusion. Therefore, it was said, "Excluding the unconditioned from the aggregate." Its meaning is this: Only in aggregate-inclusion, Excluding the unconditioned, Not in the other inclusions. Thus, the application should be understood Also in the aggregates of perception, etc. But this is the distinction: The phenomena associated with the life faculty…pe… are included by two aggregates: feeling and perception. The life faculty of the form and formless realms, and the aggregates of nibbāna, feeling, perception, and consciousness are not included by the aggregate inclusion. And among these, nibbāna, feeling, and perception are included by the element and base inclusion. The rest is easily understood. This is the method for the not-included-by-the-included category. Explanation of the Meaning of the Included-by-the-Not-Included Category In the included-by-the-not-included category, only those terms are specified that indicate a portion of the formations aggregate unmixed with anything else, or a portion of the feeling aggregate, or subtle form, or a portion of sound. Terms that take even one part of the aggregates, bases, and elements in their entirety do not fit. However, these should be understood in terms of the two truths of arising and the path, the fifteen faculties, and the eleven dependent origination factors, and so on. Here is the characteristic: that which is included by the aggregates, etc., that are themselves included in terms of aggregates, etc., the inclusion of that same initially extracted term by the aggregates, etc., is stated again. Here is the method in the initial term: the phenomena associated with the truth of arising are included by the three inclusions of aggregates, etc., by which phenomena the phenomena included by the three aggregates, etc.,
