English

By non-presence, three. In non-presence and non-disappearance, five"—the enumeration of the answer series is stated; this is the single-root method. By this same method, in the two-root and so on, the method should be applied as appropriate, but in the Pāli, "by the non-root condition, non-object, one," and so on, only the enumeration of the answer series is shown; this is the condition-negative method. According to what has been said in this way, "conditioned by the wholesome phenomenon, the indeterminate phenomenon arises by the root condition, non-object condition," and so on, in the forward-negative method, "conditioned by the unwholesome phenomenon, the unwholesome phenomenon arises by the non-root condition, object condition," and so on. The method of question and answer in the forward and reverse order, beginning with the origin, should be understood. In this text, only the enumeration of the rounds of answers is shown, so this is the dependent origination method in the wholesome triad of forward and reverse order. In the six rounds beginning with the co-nascent round, the method should be applied everywhere according to what has been said in the dependent origination round. However, any special texts and special meanings found there should be taken in their entirety from the Paṭṭhāna commentary. Here, even though all of them are shown in a condensed way, they are not shown because they would make the book too heavy. In those rounds, the textual pattern should be understood in the first five rounds, beginning with "A wholesome phenomenon arises through a co-nascent wholesome phenomenon, due to the root condition. A wholesome phenomenon through a condition... A wholesome phenomenon relying on... A wholesome phenomenon associated with... A wholesome phenomenon conjoined with a wholesome phenomenon arises due to the root condition." And in those, dependent origination and co-nascent are synonymous, condition and reliance are synonymous, association and conjunction are synonymous. There, in "A wholesome phenomenon through co-nascent," etc., the meaning should be understood appropriately as "A wholesome phenomenon, having depended on it, being co-nascent with it," etc. But in the last round of questions, "A wholesome phenomenon is a condition for a wholesome phenomenon by way of the root condition. Wholesome roots are a condition for conjoined aggregates by way of the root condition. A wholesome phenomenon for an indeterminate... A wholesome phenomenon for both a wholesome and an indeterminate... Wholesome roots for conjoined aggregates and mind-produced phenomena..." etc., in the root condition, "A wholesome phenomenon is a condition for a wholesome phenomenon by way of the object condition. Having given alms, having undertaken morality, having performed the Uposatha observance, one reflects on it. Previously well-done deeds... Having arisen from absorption, absorption... Trainees reflect on the change-of-lineage, purification, and path. Trainees or ordinary people contemplate the wholesome as impermanent, as suffering, as not-self. With telepathic knowledge, they know the mind of one endowed with a wholesome mind. The wholesome of the sphere of infinite space, the wholesome of the sphere of infinite consciousness..." Lust is a condition due to object-condition. The wholesome state of the realm of nothingness is a condition for the wholesome state of the realm of neither perception nor non-perception... Wholesome aggregates are a condition due to object-condition for the knowledge of psychic power, the knowledge of penetration of others' minds, the knowledge of previous existences, and the knowledge of beings passing on according to their deeds. What is wholesome is a condition for what is unwholesome... having given alms... having done something... one savors and rejoices in it. Based on that, lust arises. Wrong view, doubt, restlessness, and displeasure arise. One savors previously performed good deeds... displeasure arises. Having arisen from jhāna, one savors the jhāna... restlessness arises. When jhāna declines, displeasure arises from remorse. What is wholesome is a condition for what is indeterminate... An arahant reviews the path. Previously performed good deeds... wholesome... one sees... the result and subsequent consciousness arise. The wholesome state of the realm of infinite space is a condition for the result of the realm of infinite consciousness... and for the functional. The realm of nothingness... for the result and the functional. Wholesome aggregates are a condition for the knowledge of penetration of others' minds... and for the directing of attention to the knowledge of the future. What is unwholesome is a condition for what is unwholesome... One savors lust... restlessness arises. What is unwholesome is a condition for what is wholesome... A learner reflects on the abandoned defilements... for the knowledge of the future. What is unwholesome is a condition for what is indeterminate... An arahant reflects on the abandoned defilements... for the directing of attention. What is indeterminate is a condition for what is indeterminate... An arahant reviews the fruition. Nibbāna, the eye... tangible objects are seen. With the divine eye, one sees forms... the functional state of the realm of nothingness... for the functional. The form element is a condition for eye-consciousness... for the directing of attention. What is indeterminate is a condition for what is wholesome... A learner reflects on the fruition... for the knowledge of the future. What is indeterminate is a condition for what is unwholesome... one savors the eye... and so on, in the object-condition, "What is wholesome is a condition for what is wholesome due to the condition of dominance. Dominance as object, dominance as co-nascence. Dominance as object – having given alms," and so on, in the condition of dominance, "What is wholesome is a condition for what is wholesome due to the condition of contiguity," and so on, extensively, in the conditions of contiguity, immediate contiguity, co-nascence, and reciprocity. And in dependence conditions, "The wholesome is a condition for the wholesome by way of dependence. Object-dependence, proximity-dependence, natural-dependence. Object-dependence: Having given a gift," as said in the way described for object-condition, "Proximity-dependence: The preceding wholesome aggregates for the succeeding," as said in the way described for proximity-condition, "Natural-dependence: Relying on faith... he performs the Uposatha observance. He produces absorption, insight, the path, direct knowledge, attainment. Relying on virtue, learning, generosity, wisdom... the preliminary work for the first absorption is a condition for the first absorption by way of dependence... the realm of nothingness for the realm of neither-perception-nor-non-perception... the knowledge of conformity to karma for the knowledge of the future... the preliminary work for the first path... the third path for the fourth. The path for the trainees is a condition for the meaning-discrimination... for skill in what is possible and impossible. The wholesome is a condition for the unwholesome... object-dependence. Natural-de... Natural-dependence: Relying on faith, he inflates conceit. He grasps a view... faith, virtue, learning, generosity, wisdom for lust, hatred, delusion, conceit, view. Natural-dependence: Relying on lust, he kills a living being... he utters frivolous talk... he splits the Sangha. Relying on hatred, delusion, conceit, view, craving... he splits the Sangha... killing a living being for killing a living being... for the act of splitting the Sangha... is a condition. The unwholesome is a condition for the wholesome... Natural-dependence: Relying on lust, he gives a gift... he produces the path. Causes...and produces...attainments. Lust...and desires. Reliance on faith, on morality...on wisdom. By killing a being, giving alms for its expiation," and so on, in the condition of reliance, "The indeterminate is a condition for the indeterminate by way of the prenascent condition...the prenascent object—an arahant beholds the eye...and tactile objects, perceives the base...sees form with the divine eye...the form-base is a condition for eye-consciousness...the prenascent base—the eye-base is a condition for eye-consciousness...the base for the indeterminate result," and so on, in the prenascent condition, "The wholesome is a condition for the indeterminate...the postnascent wholesome aggregates for this prenascent body," and so on, in the postnascent condition, "The wholesome is a condition for the wholesome...the preceding wholesome aggregates," and so on, in the repetition condition, "The co-nascent are non-momentary, the co-nascent wholesome volition...for the associated aggregates and the mind-produced material phenomena. The non-momentary for the resultant aggregates and the materiality due to karma," and so on, in the karma condition, "The indeterminate is a condition for the indeterminate...one aggregate for three," and so on, in the result condition, "The wholesome is a condition for the wholesome," and so on, in the nutriment condition and others, "the wholesome is a condition for the indeterminate, co-nascent, postnascent, co-nascent for mind-produced material phenomena.
