But the sense-sphere wholesome associated with knowledge is an immediately proximate condition for the three collections: the form-sphere wholesome, the formless-sphere wholesome, and the supramundane wholesome. And the sense-sphere wholesome is an immediately proximate condition for these four collections: the sense-sphere resultant, the form-sphere and formless-sphere resultant, and the supramundane resultant associated with knowledge. The form-sphere wholesome is an immediately proximate condition for these three collections: the form-sphere wholesome, the sense-sphere resultant associated with knowledge, and the form-sphere resultant. The formless-sphere wholesome is an immediately proximate condition for these four collections without distinction: those two resultants, and its own wholesome's resultant. Here, especially, the wholesome of the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception is an immediately proximate condition even for the supramundane resultant known as the fruit of non-returner. The supramundane wholesome is an immediately proximate condition only for the supramundane resultant. The unwholesome, without distinction, is for the unwholesome itself, and for the wholesome, unwholesome, and resultant. Here, especially, the unwholesome associated with pleasant or neutral feeling is an immediately proximate condition for these four collections: the form-sphere and formless-sphere resultant. The sense-sphere resultant, whether associated with knowledge or dissociated from knowledge, is an immediately proximate condition for the sense-sphere functional advertence. Here, the resultant associated with knowledge, arising as rebirth, is an immediately proximate condition for these four collections: the form-sphere and formless-sphere resultant. The form-sphere resultant is an immediately proximate condition for the sense-sphere resultant with causes and the form- It is an immediately proximate condition for the resultant of the sensuous sphere, the resultant of the fine-material sphere, the resultant of the immaterial sphere, and the exclusion of the functional of the sensuous sphere, these four groups. The resultant of the immaterial sphere is an immediately proximate condition for the resultant of the sensuous sphere with three roots, the resultant of the immaterial sphere, and the exclusion of the functional of the sensuous sphere, these three groups. The supramundane resultant is an immediately proximate condition for the resultant of the sensuous sphere with three roots, the resultant of the fine-material sphere, the resultant of the immaterial sphere, and the supramundane resultant, these four groups. The functional of the sensuous sphere is an immediately proximate condition for the wholesome and unwholesome of the sensuous sphere, the resultant of the four planes, and the functional of the three planes, these nine groups. The functional of the fine-material sphere is an immediately proximate condition for the resultant of the sensuous sphere with three roots, the resultant of the fine-material sphere, and the functional of the fine-material sphere, these three groups. The functional of the immaterial sphere is an immediately proximate condition for the resultant of the sensuous sphere with three roots, the resultant of the fine-material sphere, the resultant of the immaterial sphere, the supramundane resultant, and the functional of the immaterial sphere, these five groups. Thus here, the conditioned should also be understood by way of ascertainment. Explanation of the exposition of the immediately proximate condition. 5. Explanation of the exposition of the condition of co-nascence 5. The exposition of the condition of contiguity is also of similar nature to this. But these two conditions are very extensive, therefore, having examined them in terms of all occurrences of consciousness, the expansion should be understood. Explanation of the exposition of the condition of contiguity. 6. Explanation of the exposition of the condition of co-nascence 6. In the condition of co-nascence, "mutually" means one to another. By this, it indicates both the state of being a condition and the state of being conditioned of these phenomena in one moment. "Moment of descent" means the moment of rebirth in the five-aggregate existence. For in that moment, name and form arise as if descending, as if rushing, as if coming and entering this world from another world, therefore that moment is called "moment of descent." And here, "form" is intended to mean only the heart-base. For that affects name, and name affects that, in the sense of the condition of co-nascence mutually. "Consciousness and mental factors" means the flow... Four aggregates are immaterial. In "by the condition of co-nascence," the mind-originated materiality does not pervade the conditionality of mind and mental factors, therefore "mutually" is not stated. Likewise, derived materiality is for the primary elements. Material phenomena are for immaterial phenomena, that is, the heart-base is for the four aggregates. "At any time" means at some time. "By the condition of co-nascence" is stated with reference to rebirth. "Not by the condition of co-nascence" is stated with reference to the course of existence. Now, this is established by six sections: 'Four immaterial aggregates are mutually condition for each other by the condition of co-nascence.' There, three sections are stated in terms of mutual conditionality, three are not in terms of mutual conditionality. There, in the first section, only the immaterial is both condition and conditionally arisen; in the second, only the material; in the third, name and form; in the fourth, the condition is immaterial, the conditionally arisen is material; in the fifth, both condition and conditionally arisen are material; in the sixth, the condition is material, the conditionally arisen is immaterial. This is the explanation of the text here. Now, this co-nascence condition is divided into five kinds by way of nature: wholesome, unwholesome, resultant, functional, and material. There, the wholesome is fourfold in the planes; the unwholesome is only onefold; the resultant is fourfold; that which is called functional is threefold; the material is onefold, only in the sense-sphere. Thus, the determination here should be understood by way of various distinctions. Even though thus distinguished, the wholesome in the four planes, in the five-aggregate existence, is a co-nascence condition for its associated phenomena and for mind-originated materiality, and so is the unwholesome. Whatever arises here in the immaterial, that is a co-nascence condition only for immaterial phenomena. The sense-sphere and form-sphere resultant is a co-nascence condition for mind-originated materiality and for associated phenomena. Whatever materiality here does not originate, that is only for associated phenomena. Whatever arises at rebirth, that is a co-nascence condition also for materiality produced by action. The immaterial-sphere resultant is for associated phenomena. Just that. Supramundane resultants, in the five-aggregate existence, to associated states and mind-originated matter; in the four-aggregate existence, just to immaterial states. Volitional activities of the Sensuous Sphere and Immaterial Sphere, in the five-aggregate existence, to associated states and mind-originated matter, are co-nascence condition; in the four-aggregate existence, just to immaterial states. Volitional activities of the Form Sphere, to associated states and mind-originated matter, are exclusively co-nascence condition. Of matter arisen from all four causes, in matter arisen from kamma, one great element to three, three to one, two to two great elements; the great elements to derived matter, are condition by way of co-nascence condition. At the moment of rebirth in the Sensuous and Form Spheres, the base-matter to the resultant aggregates is condition by way of co-nascence condition. But in those arisen from temperature, mind, and nutriment, the great elements to each other and to derived matter are condition by way of co-nascence condition; thus here, the arising of conditions and conditioned states should be understood, according to the determination. Explanation of the exposition of co-nascence condition. 7. Explanation of the exposition of reciprocal condition 7. In the exposition of reciprocal condition, the text has come in terms of the first three sections of the exposition of co-nascence condition. Its explanation is just like what was said there, and so is not repeated. And this reciprocal condition too, by way of nature, is fivefold: wholesome, unwholesome, resultant, functional, and matter. Therein, wholesome is fourfold by ground. Everything is just like before; thus here, the determination should be understood according to the variety of distinctions. Herein, however distinguished, all wholesome of the four planes, to its associated states, is condition by way of reciprocal condition. Likewise, unwholesome. But in resultants, resultants of the Sensuous and Form Spheres, at rebirth, to the base-matter; in the course of existence, just to associated states. Supramundane resultants of the Immaterial Sphere, just to its associated states, are condition by way of reciprocal condition. All functional states, just to associated states, are condition by way of reciprocal condition. Of matter arisen from all four causes, in that arisen from kamma, one One great element to three, Three to one, Two to two great elements, A condition through mutual support. In rebirth in the realm of desire and form, Material form is a condition to resultant aggregates, Through mutual support. In the arising from temperature, mind, and nutriment, The great elements are a condition to the great elements, Through mutual support; Thus here, the ascertainment should be understood, As to both condition and arising.
