English

And because in the pairs and triplets, the answer is similar for the truth of the path as for the truth of the origin, therefore it is stated immediately after the origin. 50. In the Designation of Faculties - the life faculty is included by two aggregates: the physical life faculty by the aggregate of form, and the immaterial life faculty by the aggregate of mental formations. The rest should be understood according to the method already stated. The textual arrangement here is similar to the designation of elements and elements. 6. Explanation of Dependent Origination 61. In the Designation of Dependent Origination - without starting the question "by how many aggregates is ignorance," only the answer "ignorance is by one aggregate" is shown. There, "conditioned by mental formations, consciousness" refers to all resultant consciousness arising at rebirth. Therefore, it is said: "included by seven elements." Name and form should also be understood in terms of rebirth and continuity. Therefore, here, including the element of sound, inclusion by eleven elements is shown. The distinction of aggregates in contact, etc., should be understood. Contact is included by one aggregate, feeling by another, but craving, clinging, and kamma-becoming are included by the aggregate of mental formations alone. Becoming Here the section is divided into eleven parts, based on things like kamma-bhava. Of these, kamma-bhava is shown together with phassa and the rest, because they are similar and different. Upapatti-bhava, kāma-bhava, saññā-bhava, and pañcavokāra-bhava are shown together, because they are similar and different from each other. And because these are conditioned phenomena, it is said, "With eleven supports, with seventeen elements." For the sound support is unconditioned, and it is not included here. 68. In the explanation of rūpa-bhava – with five supports means with the eye, ear, mind, form, and dhamma supports. With eight elements means with the eye, ear, eye-consciousness, ear-consciousness, form, dhamma, mind-element, and mind-consciousness element. The three, arūpa-bhava and the rest, are also shown together because they are similar and different. Likewise, asaññā-bhava and ekavokāra-bhava. There, with two supports means with the form and dhamma supports. The same method applies to the elements. For in the case of the long-lived Brahma gods, the form support is extracted there, because of the existence of the eye and its object. 71. Birth, with two aggregates, means rūpa-birth with the rūpa aggregate, and arūpa-birth with the sankhāra aggregate. The same method applies to old age and death. Also in the case of sorrow and the rest, with one aggregate, means sorrow, suffering, and displeasure are with the vedanā aggregate, lamentation is with the rūpa aggregate, and distress and the rest are included in the sankhāra aggregate; thus, the distinction of aggregates should be understood. 73. The bases of psychic power, with two, means with the sankhāra and viññāṇa aggregates, the mind support and dhamma support, and the dhamma element and mind-consciousness element. Jhāna, with two, means with the vedanā aggregate and sankhāra aggregate. The illimitables and the rest are not specified separately because they are similar and different. But the mind, although placed immediately after intention, is taken up later because it is dissimilar and different. There, in the case of the illimitables and the rest, with one aggregate, means vedanā is included in the vedanā aggregate, saññā in the saññā aggregate, and the rest are included in the sankhāra aggregate; thus, the distinction of aggregates should be understood. 7. Explanation of the Triad Section 77. Having shown the inclusion in the internal matrix, now to show the inclusion in the external matrix. The beginning is "kusalā dhammā," etc. There, in the triad of feeling, by three elements: body-consciousness, mind-consciousness, and the element of mind-objects. By seven elements: the elements of eye, ear, nose, tongue consciousness, the mind-element, the mind-object element, and the mind-consciousness element. In the triad of result, by eight elements: those same elements along with the element of body-consciousness. But result-mind-objects, along with defiled defilements, are taken together because of similar distribution. Just as these, so in all triads and dyads, whatever term has a similar distribution with whatever term, that is taken and distributed with that in the same order. There, the method of inclusion and non-inclusion should be understood according to what has been said. Explanation of terms of inclusion and non-inclusion. 2. Second method: Explanation of terms not included by what is included. 171. Now, to divide the term not included by what is included, the beginning is "by the eye-base," etc. Here is the characteristic: In this instance, what is included by a aggregate term but not included by base or element terms, or included by aggregate and base terms but not included by an element term, the non-inclusion by aggregates, etc., is asked and answered. But that is not fitting for the form aggregate, etc. For the form aggregate is included only by the form aggregate. And there is no such thing as it not being included by eleven and a half bases and elements. And the feeling aggregate is included only by the feeling aggregate. And there is no such thing as it not being included by the mind-object base and the mind-object element. Thus, because of the absence of non-inclusion, these and other similar terms, such as the mind-base and mind-object base, are not taken in this instance. But those terms that indicate a part of form unmixed with the formless, and a part of consciousness unmixed with another, those are taken here. And at the end: "Ten bases and seventeen elements, Seven faculties, the non-percipient existence, the one-constituent existence; Lamentation, the visible and resistant, The invisible, again, the resistant, clinging." Thus. are shown in the summary verses. Therefore, the inclusion and exclusion should be understood according to their nature. In this section, by way of questions, in the similar explanation by way of elements and sense bases, twenty things are combined into one question, seven consciousness elements are combined into one, seven faculties are combined into one, two existences are combined into one, and with lamentation, one with visible and resistant objects, one with invisible and resistant objects, one with visible objects, and one with resistant and clinging phenomena, thus eight questions are made. Among them, the division of aggregates and so on should be understood thus: In the first question, by four aggregates means by the immaterial aggregates, by two sense bases means with each of the eye sense base etc., together with the mind sense base, by eight elements means with each of the eye element etc., together with the seven consciousness elements. Here is the method: By the inclusion of aggregates, the form aggregate is included by the eye sense base. When that form aggregate is included, only the eye sense base is included by the inclusion of sense bases. The remaining ten sense bases are not included. Also by the inclusion of elements, only the eye element is included by it. The remaining ten elements are not included. Thus, those ten sense bases that are not included by it, are not included by the two, the eye sense base and the mind sense base. Also, those ten elements that are not included by it, are not included by the eye element and the seven consciousness elements. The same method applies to the form sense base and so on. 172. In the second question, since there is no consciousness aggregate that is included by any consciousness element whatsoever and not included by the mind sense base, therefore it is said to be included by the inclusion of sense bases. Here, by four aggregates means by the four, form etc. By eleven sense bases means by those except the mind sense base. By twelve elements means by the twelve remaining after removing the six consciousness elements according to their suitability. For by the eye-consciousness element, only the eye-consciousness element is included, the others are not included. The same method applies to the ear-consciousness element and so on. 173. In the third question – the explanation of the eye faculty etc. is just like the explanation of the eye base etc. But in the case of the female and male faculties, two bases along with the mind-object base, and eight elements along with the mind-object element, should be understood. 174. In the fourth question – by three bases, namely, the form base, the mind-object base, and the mind base. For in those existences, only two bases are included, namely, the form base and the mind-object base. The remaining nine form bases are said to be not included by those two, and by the mind base, thus by three. By nine elements, namely, the form element, the mind-object element, along with the seven consciousness elements. 175. In the fifth question – by two bases, referring to the first phrase, namely, the sound base and the mind base. Referring to the second phrase, namely, the form base and the mind base. And the elements, along with each of those, seven consciousness elements should be understood. 176. In the sixth question – by ten bases, namely, excluding the form base and the mind-object base. By sixteen elements, namely, excluding the form element and the mind-object element. How? For the nine coarse bases are called non-manifesting resistant mind-objects. In the aggregate of form, included by the aggregate of aggregates, only those nine bases are included by the inclusion of bases. The form base and the mind-object base are not included. By the inclusion of elements also, only those nine elements are included. The form element and the mind-object element are not included.
