Exists as unskillful, should be understood in terms of the twelve unskillful consciousnesses. Exists as indeterminate, should be understood in terms of the three mind-elements, the three rootless mind-consciousness-elements, the eight great resultant consciousnesses, and the ten volitional consciousnesses of the desire realm, in terms of these twenty-four consciousnesses. There, the eight skillful and twelve unskillful are obtained through the process of impulsion. The volitional mind-element is obtained through adverting. The two resultant mind-elements are obtained through receiving, the three resultant mind-consciousness-elements through investigating and registering, the volitional rootless mind-consciousness-element through determining, the eight great resultant consciousnesses through registering, the nine volitional consciousnesses are obtained through the process of impulsion. The same method applies at the ear, nose, tongue, and body doors. But at the mind-door, exists as skillful is spoken of in terms of the skillful of the four planes, exists as unskillful in terms of the twelve unskillful. Exists as indeterminate is spoken of in terms of the eleven resultant consciousnesses of the desire realm, the ten volitional, the nine volitional of the form and formless realms, and the four fruits of recluseship, in terms of these thirty-four consciousness-moments. There, the skillful and unskillful of the four planes are obtained through the process of impulsion. Of the volitional, the rootless mind-consciousness-element is obtained through adverting, the eleven resultant consciousnesses through registering, the volitional of the three planes and the fruits of recluseship are obtained through the process of impulsion. They are fit to be spoken of, standing in any of the seven modes, but being shown standing in the thirty modes, they become easy to show, so they showed them standing in the thirty modes. Indeed, all these consciousnesses are obtained at the eye-door in three ways: by way of the condition of dependence, by way of overcoming, and by way of cultivation. Likewise, at the ear-door and mind-door. But at the nose, tongue, and body doors, they should be understood as being obtained in only two ways: by way of overcoming, and by way of cultivation. How? Here, a bhikkhu in a monastery Wandering about, seeing a kasina circle, asking, "What is this?" and being told, "A kasina circle," then asking again, "What do they do with this?" Then they explain to him, "By developing it in this way, they generate jhānas, develop vipassanā based on the attainments, and attain arahantship." The young man, endowed with aspiration, not considering it too much, thinking, "This quality should be produced by me as well; it is not possible to produce it lying down and sleeping; from the beginning, effort must be made, morality must be purified," he purifies morality. Then, established in morality, cutting off the ten fetters, content with contentment with the three robes, having performed the duties to teachers and preceptors, having learned the meditation subject, having performed the preliminary work on the kasina, having generated the attainments, having developed vipassanā based on the attainments, he attains arahantship. There, all the preliminary work feeling is sense-sphere, the eight attainments feeling is form-sphere and formless-sphere, the path and fruition feeling is supramundane, thus visual consciousness is a strong condition for the production of feeling in the four planes, thus feeling due to eye-contact is called having four planes. Thus, these are obtained "by way of decisive support." But when a form comes into the range of the eye-door, a young man, standing in perception, knowing the arising of his own defilements, "In this desirable object, attachment has arisen in me, in the undesirable, aversion, through lack of consideration, delusion, but in the bound, pride has arisen in me, in the grasped, wrong view, in the scattered, restlessness, in the undecided, doubt, in the strong, latent tendency has arisen," thinking, "These defilements of mine, growing, will lead to misfortune and ruin, come, let me restrain them," thinking, "It is not possible to restrain defilements lying down and sleeping; from the beginning, effort must be made, morality must be purified," following the method stated earlier, he attains arahantship. There, all the preliminary work Sensations of sense-desire sphere through abandonment, Sensations of eight attainments, form and formless spheres, Sensations of path and fruit, supramundane. Thus, having gone beyond defilements arisen in a form object, This four-level sensation is born of eye-contact. Thus, it is obtained through "transcendence". But at the eye-door, when a form comes into range, one establishes a preliminary grasp thus: "What is this form based on?" Then, knowing it is "based on elements," One grasps the four great elements and derived form as form, And the phenomena based on that as formless. Then, grasping conditioned name-and-form, Imposing the three characteristics, Reflecting on formations in the order of insight, One attains arahantship. There, all preliminary work sensations are of the sense-desire sphere, Sensations of the eight attainments, form and formless spheres, Sensations of path and fruit, supramundane. Thus, having produced it by reflecting on a form object, This sensation is born of eye-contact. Thus, it is obtained through "development". Another monk hears, "Having done kasiṇa preliminary work, Having produced attainments, Having developed insight based on the attainment, They attain arahantship." A clansman with inclination, Not considering it too much, "This quality should be produced by me also," Following the same method, Attains arahantship. There, all preliminary work sensations are of the sense-desire sphere, Sensations of the eight attainments, form and formless spheres, Sensations of path and fruit, supramundane. Thus, the ear-consciousness is a strong condition for the arising of four-level sensations, This four-level sensation is born of ear-contact. Thus, it is obtained through "dependence". But at the ear-door, when a sound comes into range, Everything should be understood in the same way as described for the eye-door. Thus, having gone beyond defilements arisen in a sound object, This four-level sensation is born of ear-contact. Thus, it is obtained through "transcendence". are obtained. But when a sound reaches the ear-door, one establishes a perception thus: "What is this sound dependent on?" Everything should be understood in the same way as described for the eye-door. Thus, having discerned the sound-object and brought it about, this feeling is said to be born of ear-contact. Thus, they are obtained 'through cultivation'. But at the nose, tongue, and body-doors, when odor-objects, etc., reach the path, one thinks, "Desire has arisen in me for this pleasing object." Everything should be understood in the same way as described for the eye-door. Thus, having overcome the defilements that arose in odor-objects, etc., this four-planed feeling is said to be born of nose, tongue, and body-contact. Thus, in these three doors, they are obtained 'through overcoming'. But at the nose-door, etc., when odors, etc., reach the path, one establishes a perception thus: "This odor, this taste, this tangible object, what are they dependent on?" Everything should be understood in the same way as described for the eye-door. Thus, having discerned the odor-objects, etc., and brought them about, this feeling is said to be born of nose, tongue, and body-contact. Thus, they are obtained 'through cultivation'. But at the mind-door, they are obtained in three ways. For one sees birth as fearful, sees old age, sickness, and death as fearful, and having seen them as fearful, thinks, "It is fitting to be freed from birth, old age, sickness, and death. But it is not possible to be freed from birth, etc., by lying down and sleeping. From the very beginning, it is fitting to make effort and purify one's virtue." And having proceeded in the same way as described for the eye-door, one attains arahantship. There, all preliminary feeling is sense-sphere, the eight attainments' feeling is form-sphere and formless-sphere, the path and fruition feeling is supramundane. Thus, birth, old age, sickness, and death are a strong condition for the arising of four-planed feeling. This four-planed feeling is said to be born of mind-contact. Thus, they are obtained 'through dependence'. But at the mind-door, when an object of mind reaches the path, everything should be understood in the same way as described for the eye-door. Thus, having overcome the defilement arisen in the object of Dhamma, it is said to have gone beyond. This four-level feeling is born of mental contact. Thus, it is obtained 'by way of overcoming.' But at the mind-door, when a Dhamma object comes into the range, one establishes a preliminary grasp thus: 'What is this Dhamma object based on?' 'It is based on a base.' 'What is the base based on?' 'It is based on the great elements.' He grasps the four great elements and derived matter as form, and the Dhamma that is its object he grasps as formless. Then, having grasped conditioned name and form, having imposed the three characteristics, having contemplated formations in the order of insight, he attains Arahatship. There, all preliminary work feeling is sense-sphere, the eight attainments feeling is form-sphere and formless-sphere, the path and fruition feeling is supramundane. Thus, having contemplated the Dhamma object, it is produced. This feeling is said to be born of mental contact. Thus, it is obtained 'by way of cultivation.' But these six feelings each, said to be born of eye-contact...pe...born of mind-contact, at the end of all the twenty-four kinds of turns, etc., are said to be stated by way of associated condition.
