Is the truth of cessation unconditioned? Is cessation unconditioned? Yes. Is the truth of suffering unconditioned? Is suffering unconditioned? It should not be said thus. Is the truth of origin unconditioned, but origin conditioned? Yes. Is the truth of cessation unconditioned, but cessation conditioned? It should not be said thus. Is the truth of the path unconditioned, but the path conditioned? Yes. Is the truth of cessation unconditioned, but cessation conditioned? It should not be said thus. 454. Should it not be said: "The four truths are unconditioned"? Yes. But has it not been said by the Blessed One: "These four, monks, are real, not unreal, not otherwise! Which four? 'This is suffering,' monks, this is real, this is not unreal, this is not otherwise... 'This is the origin of suffering,'... 'This is the cessation of suffering,'... 'This is the path leading to the cessation of suffering...'" "the path" - this is true, this is not otherwise, this is not different. "These, monks, are the four truths, not otherwise, not different." Is there a Suttanta? Yes. Then the four truths are unconditioned? The discussion on truths is finished. 6. The Sixth Chapter (56) 4. It should not be said thus (etc.) Are there two unconditioned things? Yes. Are there two refuges (etc.) or an intermediate state? It should not be said thus (etc.) Is the sphere of infinite space unconditioned? Yes. Is the sphere of infinite space existence, a destination, an abode for beings, transmigration, a womb, a station for consciousness, the acquisition of selfhood? Yes. Is the unconditioned existence, a destination, an abode for beings, transmigration, a womb, a station for consciousness, the acquisition of selfhood? It should not be said thus (etc.) Is there kamma leading to the sphere of infinite space? Yes. Is there kamma leading to the unconditioned? It should not be said thus (etc.) Are there beings who attain the sphere of infinite space? Yes. Are there beings who attain the unconditioned? It should not be said thus (etc.) Do beings in the sphere of infinite space get born, age, die, pass away, and reappear? Yes. Do beings in the unconditioned get born, age, die, pass away, and reappear? It should not be said thus (etc.) Are there feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness in the sphere of infinite space? Yes. Are there feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness in the unconditioned? It should not be said thus (etc.) Is the sphere of infinite space a four-constituent existence? Yes. Is the unconditioned a four-constituent existence? It should not be said thus (etc.) 456. Should it not be said: "The four formless attainments are unconditioned"? Yes. Indeed, were not the four formless attainments declared by the Blessed One to be imperturbable? Yes. If indeed the four formless attainments were declared by the Blessed One to be imperturbable, then surely it should be said: "The four formless attainments... is unconditioned." The discourse on formless attainments is concluded. 6. The Sixth Chapter (57) 5. Discourse on the Attainment of Cessation 457. Is the attainment of cessation unconditioned? Yes. Is Nibbāna a refuge, a shelter, a protection, a resort, the immutable, the deathless? It should not be said thus... (etc.) Is the attainment of cessation unconditioned, and Nibbāna unconditioned? Yes. Are there two unconditioned things? It should not be said thus... (etc.) Are there two unconditioned things? Yes. Are there two refuges... (etc.) or an interval? It should not be said thus... (etc.) Is the attainment of cessation unconditioned? Yes. Do some attain cessation, acquire it, produce it, bring it forth, establish it, make it arise, generate it, bring it into being, create it, bring it about? Yes. Do some attain the unconditioned, acquire it, produce it, bring it forth, establish it, make it arise, generate it, bring it into being, create it, bring it about? It should not be said thus... (etc.) 458. Is purification and emergence discerned from cessation? Yes. Is purification and emergence discerned from the unconditioned? It should not be said thus... (etc.) For one attaining cessation, does the verbal formation cease first, then the bodily formation, then the mental formation? Yes. For one attaining the unconditioned, does the verbal formation cease first, then the bodily formation, then the mental formation? It should not be said thus... (etc.) For one emerging from cessation, does the mental formation arise first, then the bodily formation, then the verbal formation? Yes. For one emerging from the unconditioned, does the mental formation arise first, then the bodily formation, then the verbal formation? It should not be said thus... (etc.) For one emerged from cessation, do three contacts touch – the contact of emptiness, the contact of signlessness, the contact of desirelessness? Yes. (etc.) For one emerged from cessation, the mind inclines to seclusion, to Is it inclined towards seclusion, tending towards seclusion? Yes. Should it not be said that "the attainment of cessation is unconditioned"? Yes. Is it conditioned? It should not be said so... Therefore, the attainment of cessation is unconditioned. Is Nibbāna a refuge, a shelter, a protection, a final goal, immutable, deathless? It should not be said so... Is space unconditioned, is Nibbāna unconditioned? Yes. Are there two unconditioned things? It should not be said so... Are there two unconditioned things? Yes. Are there two refuges...? Or an intermediate space? It should not be said so... Is space unconditioned? Yes. Do some make non-space into space? Yes. Do some make the conditioned into the unconditioned? It should not be said so... Do some make space into non-space? Yes. Do some make the unconditioned into the conditioned? It should not be said so... Do birds go in space, do the moon and sun go, do star-forms go, do they perform psychic powers, do they move their arms, do they move their hands, do they throw clods, do they throw sticks, do they throw psychic power, do they throw arrows? Yes. Do birds go in the unconditioned, do the moon and sun go, do star-forms go, do they perform psychic powers, do they move their arms, do they move their hands, do they throw clods, do they throw sticks, do they throw psychic power, do they throw arrows? It should not be said so... 461. Do they make houses surrounding space, do they make granaries? Yes. Do they make houses surrounding the unconditioned, do they make granaries? It should not be said so... When a well is dug, does non-space become space? Yes. Does the conditioned become the unconditioned? It should not be said so... When an empty well is filled, the empty one... When [something] is filled, when an empty pot is being filled, does space disappear? Yes. Does the unconditioned disappear? It should not be said thus... 462. Should it not be said – "space is unconditioned"? Yes. Is space conditioned? It should not be said thus... Therefore, space is unconditioned. The discourse on space is concluded. 6. Sixth Chapter (59) 7. Discourse on whether space is visible 463. Is space visible? Yes. Is form, the sphere of form, the element of form, blue, yellow, red, white, cognizable by the eye, striking the eye, coming within the range of the eye? It should not be said thus... Is space visible? Yes. Dependent on the eye and space, does eye-consciousness arise? It should not be said thus... Dependent on the eye and space, does eye-consciousness arise? Yes. Is there a Sutta that says – "Dependent on the eye and space, eye-consciousness arises"? No. Is there a Sutta that says – "Dependent on the eye and forms, eye-consciousness arises"? Yes. If there is a Sutta that says – "Dependent on the eye and forms, eye-consciousness arises", then it should not be said – "Dependent on the eye and space, eye-consciousness arises". 464. Should it not be said – "space is visible"? Yes. Does one not see the space between two trees, the space between two pillars, a keyhole, a window opening? Yes. If one sees the space between two trees, the space between two pillars, a keyhole, a window opening, then it should be said – "space is visible". The discourse on whether space is visible is concluded. 6. Sixth Chapter (60) 8. Discourse on whether the earth element is visible, and so on 465. Is the earth element visible? Yes. Form, the sphere of form, the element of form, blue, yellow, red, white, cognizable by the eye, and Is it that it strikes the eye when it comes into the range of the eye?
