6. The Sixth Chapter (53) 1. Discourse on the Fixed Order 445. Is the Fixed Order unconditioned? Yes. Is Nibbāna a refuge, a shelter, a protection, a final goal, immutable, deathless? It should not be said thus... and so on. Is the Fixed Order unconditioned, and Nibbāna unconditioned? Yes. Are there two unconditioned things? It should not be said thus... and so on. Are there two unconditioned things? Yes. Are there two refuges, two shelters, two protections, two final goals, two immutables, two deathless states, two Nibbānas? It should not be said thus... and so on. Are there two Nibbānas? Yes. Is there a higher or lower state, an inferior or superior state, an excellence or deficiency, a boundary, a distinction, a line, or an interval between two Nibbānas? It should not be said thus... and so on. Is the Fixed Order unconditioned? Yes. Do some enter, attain, produce, generate, arouse, bring forth, bring into being, cause to arise, create, or cause to be created the Fixed Order? Yes. Do some enter, attain, produce, generate, arouse, bring forth, bring into being, cause to arise, create, or cause to be created the unconditioned? It should not be said thus... and so on. 446. Is the Fixed Order unconditioned? Yes. Is the Path unconditioned? It should not be said thus... and so on. Is the Path conditioned? Yes. Is the Fixed Order conditioned? It should not be said thus... and so on. Is the Fixed Order of Stream-entry unconditioned? Yes. Is the Path of Stream-entry unconditioned? It should not be said thus... and so on. Is the Path of Stream-entry conditioned? Yes. Is the Fixed Order of Stream-entry conditioned? It should not be said thus... and so on. Is the Fixed Order of Once-returning... and so on... the Fixed Order of Non-returning... and so on... the Fixed Order of Arahantship unconditioned? Yes. Is the Path of Arahantship unconditioned? It should not be said thus... and so on. Is the Path of Arahantship conditioned? Yes. Is the Fixed Order of Arahantship conditioned? It should not be said thus... and so on. Is the Fixed Order of Stream-entry unconditioned... and so on... the Fixed Order of Arahantship unconditioned, and Nibbāna unconditioned? Yes. Are there five unconditioned things? It should not be said thus... and so on. Are there five unconditioned things? Yes. Are there five refuges... and so on... an interval? is it? It should not be said thus (and so on). Is the fixed order unconditioned? Yes. Is the fixed order of wrongness unconditioned? It should not be said thus (and so on). Is the fixed order of wrongness conditioned? Yes. Is the fixed order of rightness conditioned? It should not be said thus (and so on). 447. Should it not be said: "The fixed order is unconditioned"? Yes. When the fixed order arises and ceases, does it become unfixed? It should not be said thus (and so on). Then the fixed order is unconditioned. When the fixed order of wrongness arises and ceases, does it become unfixed? It should not be said thus (and so on). Then the fixed order of wrongness is unconditioned. The discourse on the Fixed Order is concluded. 6. The Sixth Chapter (54) 2. The Discourse on Dependent Origination 448. Is Dependent Origination unconditioned? Yes. Is Nibbāna a refuge, a shelter, a protection, a final goal, the unshakeable, the deathless? It should not be said thus (and so on). Is Dependent Origination unconditioned, and Nibbāna unconditioned? Yes. Are there two unconditioned things? It should not be said thus (and so on). Are there two unconditioned things? Yes. Are there two refuges, two shelters, two protections, two final goals, two unshakeables, two deathless states, two Nibbānas? It should not be said thus (and so on). Are there two Nibbānas? Yes. Is there, for two Nibbānas, highness or lowness, inferiority or superiority, elevation or degradation, a boundary, or a distinction, or a line, or an interval? It should not be said thus (and so on). 449. Is Dependent Origination unconditioned? Yes. Is Ignorance unconditioned? It should not be said thus (and so on). Is Ignorance conditioned? Yes. Is Dependent Origination conditioned? It should not be said thus (and so on). Is Dependent Origination unconditioned? Yes. Are formations conditioned by ignorance unconditioned? It should not be said thus (and so on). Are formations conditioned by ignorance conditioned? Yes. Is Dependent Origination conditioned? It should not be said thus (and so on). Is Dependent Origination unconditioned? Yes. Is consciousness conditioned by formations unconditioned? It should not be said thus (and so on). Is consciousness conditioned by formations conditioned? Yes. Is Dependent Origination conditioned? It should not be said thus (and so on). Dependent Origination Is it unconditioned? Yes. Is name-and-form unconditioned, conditioned by consciousness? It should not be said thus (etc.) Is name-and-form conditioned, conditioned by consciousness? Yes. Is dependent origination conditioned? It should not be said thus (etc.) Is dependent origination unconditioned? Yes. Is old age and death unconditioned, conditioned by birth? It should not be said thus (etc.) Is old age and death conditioned, conditioned by birth? Yes. Is dependent origination conditioned? It should not be said thus (etc.) 450. Should it not be said: "Dependent origination is unconditioned"? Yes. Has it not been said by the Blessed One: "Conditioned by birth, monks, is old age and death. Whether Tathāgatas arise or do not arise, that element remains, the stability of the Dhamma, the fixedness of the Dhamma, the specific conditionality. This the Tathāgata fully awakens to, fully comprehends. Having fully awakened to it, having fully comprehended it, he declares it, teaches it, makes it known, establishes it, reveals it, explains it, clarifies it. And he says: 'See, monks, conditioned by birth is old age and death.' Conditioned by existence, monks, is birth... (etc.) ...conditioned by ignorance, monks, are volitional formations. Whether Tathāgatas arise or do not arise, that element remains... (etc.) ...and he says: 'See, monks, conditioned by ignorance are volitional formations.' Thus, monks, that suchness, un-otherwise-ness, un-different-ness, specific conditionality therein – this, monks, is called dependent origination." Is there such a discourse? Yes. Therefore, dependent origination is unconditioned. 451. That stability of the Dhamma, fixedness of the Dhamma, which is unconditioned in "conditioned by ignorance are volitional formations," is Nibbāna unconditioned? Yes. Are there two unconditioned things? It should not be said thus (etc.) Are there two unconditioned things? Yes. Are there two protections... (etc.) ...or is there an interval? It should not be said thus (etc.) That stability of the Dhamma, fixedness of the Dhamma, which is unconditioned in "conditioned by ignorance are volitional formations," that stability of the Dhamma, fixedness of the Dhamma, which is unconditioned in "conditioned by volitional formations is consciousness." , is Nibbāna unconditioned? Yes. Are there three unconditioned things? It should not be said so… (etc.)… Are there three unconditioned things? Yes. Are there three refuges… (etc.)… or an interval? It should not be said so… (etc.)…. Is the stability of phenomena, the regularity of phenomena, which is there due to ignorance, unconditioned? Yes. Is there a high and low, inferior and superior, excellence and inferiority, boundary or distinction, line or interval among the four Nibbānas? It should not be said so… (etc.)…. Is the Truth of Suffering unconditioned? Yes. Is suffering unconditioned? It should not be said so… (etc.)… Is the Truth of Suffering unconditioned? Yes. Are bodily suffering, mental suffering, sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair unconditioned? It should not be said so… (etc.)… Is the Truth of the Origin unconditioned? Yes. Is the origin unconditioned? It should not be said so… (etc.)… Is the Truth of the Origin unconditioned? Yes. Are craving for sensual pleasures, craving for existence, and craving for non-existence unconditioned? It should not be said so… (etc.)… Is the Truth of the Path unconditioned? Yes. Is the path unconditioned? It should not be said so… (etc.)… Is the Truth of the Path unconditioned? Yes. Is Right View… (etc.)… Right Concentration unconditioned? It should not be said so… (etc.)….
