"attached to sensual pleasures and existences." 111. And which person is unattached to sensual pleasures, but attached to existences? A Non-returner – this person is called "unattached to sensual pleasures, but attached to existences." 112. And which person is unattached to sensual pleasures and existences? An Arahant – this person is called "unattached to sensual pleasures and existences." 113. And which person is like a rock-inscription? Here, a certain person often gets angry. And that anger of his lingers for a long, long time. Just as an inscription on a rock is not quickly erased by wind or by water, it endures for a long time; even so, a certain person often gets angry. And that anger of his lingers for a long, long time – this person is called "like a rock-inscription." 114. And which person is like an earth-inscription? Here, a certain person often gets angry. And that anger of his does not linger for a long, long time. Just as an inscription on the earth is quickly erased by wind or by water, it does not endure for a long time; even so, a certain person often gets angry. And that anger of his does not linger for a long, long time – this person is called "like an earth-inscription." 115. And which person is like a water-inscription? Here, a certain person, even when spoken to harshly, even when spoken to roughly, even when spoken to disagreeably, still comes together, still unites, still rejoices. Just as an inscription on water is quickly erased, it does not endure for a long time; even so, a certain person, even when spoken to harshly, even when spoken to roughly, even when spoken to disagreeably, still comes together, still unites, still rejoices – this person is called "like a water-inscription." 116. Which three persons here are like rags? There are three rags: A new rag is ugly, unpleasant to touch, and of little value. A middle-aged rag is ugly, unpleasant to touch, and of little value. An old rag is ugly, unpleasant to touch, and of little value. An old rag is used to wipe a cooking pot, or they throw it on a rubbish heap. Just so, these three persons like rags exist, are found among bhikkhus. Which three? Even if a bhikkhu is new, if he is immoral, of evil nature, this is his ugliness. Just as that rag is ugly, so is this person. Those who associate with him, resort to him, attend upon him, follow his example, for them that is for long-term harm, for suffering. This is his unpleasantness to touch. Just as that rag is unpleasant to touch, so is this person. Those from whom he accepts robes, almsfood, lodging, medicines for the sick, for them that is not of great fruit, not of great benefit. This is his little value. Just as that rag is of little value, so is this person. Even if a bhikkhu is middle-aged… Even if a bhikkhu is an elder, if he is immoral, of evil nature, this is his ugliness. Just as that rag is ugly, so is this person. Those who associate with him, resort to him, attend upon him, follow his example, for them that is for long-term harm, for suffering. This is his unpleasantness to touch. Just as that rag is unpleasant to touch, so is this person. Those from whom he accepts robes, almsfood, lodging, medicines for the sick, for them that is not of great fruit, not of great benefit. This is his little value. Just as that rag is of little value, so is this person. If such an elder bhikkhu is in the midst of the Saṅgha… he speaks. The monks said to him thus: "What indeed is there in your speaking, foolish and unskilled one? Do you too think that you should speak?" He, angered and displeased, utters such a speech that by such a speech the Saṅgha expels him, like a rag from a rubbish heap. These three rag-like persons exist, are found among the monks. 117. Among these, which are the three persons like Benares cloth? There are three kinds of Benares cloth – even new Benares cloth is beautiful, pleasant to touch, and valuable, even middle-aged Benares cloth is beautiful, pleasant to touch, and valuable, even old Benares cloth is beautiful, pleasant to touch, and valuable. Even old Benares cloth, they use it to wrap jewels or place it in perfume boxes. Just so, these three persons like Benares cloth exist, are found among the monks. Which three? Even if a monk is new, if he is virtuous and of good character, this is his beauty. Just as that Benares cloth is beautiful, so is this person. Those who associate with him, frequent him, attend upon him, and follow his views, for them it is for long-term welfare and happiness. This is his pleasantness to touch. Just as that Benares cloth is pleasant to touch, so is this person. Those from whom he accepts robes, alms-food, lodgings, and requisites for the sick, such as medicines, for them it is of great fruit and great benefit. This is his value. Just as that Benares cloth is valuable, so is this person. Even if a monk is of middle standing... Even if a monk is an elder, if he is virtuous and of good character, this is his beauty. Just as that Benares cloth is beautiful, so is this person. Those who... And those who associate with him, who frequent him, who attend upon him, who follow his view, for them that is for long-term welfare and happiness. This is because of his pleasant touch. Just as a Benares cloth is pleasant to the touch, so is this person. And for those from whom he accepts robes, almsfood, lodging, and requisites for the sick, such as medicine, for them that is of great fruit, of great benefit. This is because of his great value. Just as a Benares cloth is of great value, so is this person. If such an elder monk speaks in the midst of the Sangha, the monks say to him: "Be quiet, venerable sirs, the elder monk is speaking on the Dhamma and Vinaya." His words are worthy of being taken to heart, like a Benares cloth in a perfume box. These three persons, likened to Benares cloth, exist and are found among monks. 118. And what person is easily measured? Here, a certain person is arrogant, haughty, fickle, talkative, scatter-brained, forgetful, unaware, unconcentrated, with a wandering mind, with exposed faculties. This person is called "easily measured." 119. And what person is difficult to measure? Here, a certain person is not arrogant, not haughty, not fickle, not talkative, not scatter-brained, with established mindfulness, aware, concentrated, with a unified mind, with restrained faculties. This person is called "difficult to measure." 120. And what person is immeasurable? Here, a certain person, through the destruction of the taints, enters and dwells in the taintless liberation of mind, and liberation by wisdom, having realized it for himself with direct knowledge in this very life. This person is called "immeasurable." 121. And what person should not be associated with, not frequented, not attended upon? Here, a certain person is inferior in virtue, in concentration, and in wisdom. Such a person should not be associated with, not frequented, not attended upon, except out of compassion, except out of sympathy. 122. And what person should be associated with, frequented, attended upon...? Here, some person is similar in virtue, in concentration, in wisdom. Such a person should be associated with, should be frequented, should be served. For what reason? For those who have attained similarity in virtue, there will be talk of virtue for us, and that will be comfortable for us, and that will be conducive to progress for us; for those who have attained similarity in concentration, there will be talk of concentration for us, and that will be comfortable for us, and that will be conducive to progress for us; for those who have attained similarity in wisdom, there will be talk of wisdom for us, and that will be comfortable for us, and that will be conducive to progress for us. Therefore, such a person should be associated with, should be frequented, should be served. 123. And what kind of person should be associated with, should be frequented, should be served, with respect and reverence? Here, some person is superior in virtue, in concentration, in wisdom. Such a person should be associated with, should be frequented, should be served, with respect and reverence. For what reason? "I will complete my unfulfilled aggregate of virtue, or I will assist my fulfilled aggregate of virtue with wisdom here and there; I will complete my unfulfilled aggregate of concentration, or I will assist my fulfilled aggregate of concentration with wisdom here and there; I will complete my unfulfilled aggregate of wisdom, or I will assist my fulfilled aggregate of wisdom with wisdom here and there." Therefore, such a person should be associated with, should be frequented, should be served, with respect and reverence. 124. And what kind of person should be shunned, should not be associated with, should not be frequented, should not be served? Here, some person is immoral, of evil nature, impure, of doubtful conduct, of hidden deeds, not a recluse, but claiming to be a recluse, not a celibate, but claiming to be a celibate, inwardly rotten, leaky, born of refuse. Such a person should be shunned, should not be associated with, should not be frequented, should not be served. For what reason? Even if such a person... does not follow his views, but a bad reputation arises for him – "He is a person with bad friends, a bad companion, associated with bad people." Just as a snake in a cesspit, even if it does not bite, it smears one; even so, even if one does not follow the views of such a person, a bad reputation arises for him – "He is a person with bad friends, a bad companion, associated with bad people!" Therefore, such a person should be shunned, not associated with, not frequented, not attended upon. 125. And what kind of person should be overlooked, not associated with, not frequented, not attended upon? Here, some person is angry and full of vexation. Even if spoken to a little, he becomes enraged, gets angry, becomes hostile,
