And how does a person emerge and cross over? Here, a certain person emerges, thinking: "Good is faith in wholesome states, good is shame in wholesome states, good is fear of wrongdoing in wholesome states, good is energy in wholesome states, good is wisdom in wholesome states." He, with the destruction of the three fetters, with the attenuation of lust, hatred, and delusion, becomes a once-returner, having come to this world just once more, he makes an end of suffering. Thus, a person emerges and crosses over. And how does a person emerge and reach firm ground? Here, a certain person emerges, thinking: "Good is faith in wholesome states, good is shame in wholesome states, good is fear of wrongdoing in wholesome states, good is energy in wholesome states, good is wisdom in wholesome states." He, with the destruction of the five lower fetters, becomes an apparitional rebirth, attaining final Nibbāna there, not returning from that world. Thus, a person emerges and reaches firm ground. And how does a person emerge and cross over, gone to the far shore, standing on dry land, a brahmin? Here, a certain person emerges, thinking: "Good is faith in wholesome states, good is shame in wholesome states, good is fear of wrongdoing in wholesome states, good is energy in wholesome states, good is wisdom in wholesome states." He, with the destruction of the taints, having realized for himself with direct knowledge the taintless liberation of mind, liberation by wisdom, and having attained it, he dwells therein. Thus, a person emerges and crosses over, gone to the far shore, standing on dry land, a brahmin. 204. And what kind of person is liberated in both ways? Here, a certain person dwells having touched the eight liberations with the body, and having seen with wisdom, his taints are destroyed. This person is called one liberated in both ways. 205. And what kind of person is liberated by wisdom… …a body-witness… …one attained to view… …liberated by faith… …a Dhamma-follower… 206. And what kind of person is a faith-follower? For whom, a person entered upon the realization of the fruit of stream-entry, the faculty of faith is dominant, he develops the Noble Path, flowing with faith, preceded by faith. This person is called a faith-follower. A person entered upon the realization of the fruit of stream-entry is a faith-follower, one established in the fruit is liberated by faith. The Section of Seven. 8. Designation of Eight Persons 207. Among them, who are the four persons endowed with the path, the four persons endowed with the fruit? The stream-enterer, one entered upon the realization of the fruit of stream-entry; the once-returner, one entered upon the realization of the fruit of once-returning; the non-returner, one entered upon the realization of the fruit of non-returning; the Arahant, one entered upon the realization of the fruit of Arahantship; these are the four persons endowed with the path, these are the four persons endowed with the fruit. The Section of Eight. 9. Designation of Nine Persons 208. And what kind of person is a Perfectly Self-Enlightened One? Here, a certain person, in doctrines unheard before, himself fully awakens to the truths, and there attains omniscience and mastery over the powers. This person is called a Perfectly Self-Enlightened One. And what kind of person is a Private Buddha? Here, a certain person, in doctrines unheard before, himself fully awakens to the truths, but does not attain omniscience there, nor mastery over the powers. This person is called a Private Buddha. And what kind of person is one liberated in both ways? Here, a certain person dwells having touched the eight liberations with the body, and having seen with wisdom, his defilements are destroyed. This person is called one liberated in both ways. And what kind of person is one liberated by wisdom? Here, a certain person does not dwell having touched the eight liberations with the body, but having seen with wisdom, his defilements are destroyed. This person is called one liberated by wisdom. And what person is a body-witness? Here, a certain person dwells having touched the eight liberations with the body, and having seen with wisdom, some of their defilements are destroyed. This person is called a body-witness. And what person has attained to view? Here, a certain person understands "this is suffering" as it really is, ...understands "this is the path leading to the cessation of suffering" as it really is. And the teachings proclaimed by the Tathāgata are well-seen and well-investigated by their wisdom. And having seen with wisdom, some of their defilements are destroyed. This person is called one who has attained to view. And what person is liberated by faith? Here, a certain person understands "this is suffering" as it really is, ...understands "this is the path leading to the cessation of suffering" as it really is. And the teachings proclaimed by the Tathāgata are well-seen and well-investigated by their wisdom. And having seen with wisdom, some of their defilements are destroyed, but not as in the case of one who has attained to view. This person is called one liberated by faith. And what person is a Dhamma-follower? For whom, being on the path to the realization of the fruit of stream-entry, the faculty of wisdom is excessive. They cultivate the noble path led by wisdom, flowing with wisdom. This person is called a Dhamma-follower. A person on the path to the realization of the fruit of stream-entry is a Dhamma-follower; one established in the fruit is one who has attained to view. And what person is a faith-follower? For whom, being on the path to the realization of the fruit of stream-entry, the faculty of faith is excessive. They cultivate the noble path led by faith, flowing with faith. The exposition of nines. 10. Designation of Persons in Tens 209. For which five is there a conclusion here? For one who is a seven-times-more, a family-to-family, a one-seeder, a once-returner, and one who And an Arahant in this very life – for these five, here is the completion. For which five is the completion after leaving here? One who attains Nibbāna in the interval, one who attains Nibbāna after reducing, one who attains Nibbāna without exertion, one who attains Nibbāna with exertion, one who goes upstream to the Akaniṭṭha realm – for these five, after leaving here is the completion.
