One who is pleased by appearance. One who judges by sound. One who is pleased by sound. (23) One who judges by harshness. One who is pleased by harshness. One who judges by Dhamma. dha not pleased. (24) There is one person who practices for his own good, not for the good of others; there is one person who practices for the good of others, not for his own good; there is one person who practices for his own good and for the good of others; there is one person who practices neither for his own good nor for the good of others. (25) There is one person who torments himself, devoted to the practice of self-torment; there is one person who torments others, devoted to the practice of tormenting others; there is one person who torments himself, devoted to the practice of self-torment, and torments others, devoted to the practice of tormenting others; there is one person who neither torments himself nor is devoted to the practice of self-torment, nor torments others nor is devoted to the practice of tormenting others. He, not tormenting himself, not tormenting others, in this very life is cooled, extinguished, become cool, experiencing happiness, he dwells with a mind become divine. (26) With passion, with hatred, with delusion, with conceit. (27) There is one person who is a recipient of internal mental tranquility, but not a recipient of insight into higher wisdom; there is one person who is a recipient of insight into higher wisdom, but not a recipient of internal mental tranquility; there is one person who is a recipient of internal mental tranquility and a recipient of insight into higher wisdom; there is one person who is neither a recipient of internal mental tranquility nor a recipient of insight into higher wisdom. (28) The person who goes with the stream, the person who goes against the stream, the person who stands firm, the one who has crossed, gone to the far shore, stands on dry land, the brahmin. (29) Of little learning, not endowed with learning; of little learning, endowed with learning; of much learning, not endowed with learning; of much learning, endowed with learning. (30) The unshakeable recluse, the lotus-like recluse, the white lotus-like recluse, the delicate recluse among recluses. The Group of Fours. 5. The Exposition of Fives 11. (10) Five who dwell at the foot of a tree. (11) Five who dwell in the open air. (12) Five who practice the sitting posture. (13) Five who accept any bed or seat. (14) Five who dwell in charnel grounds. The Chapter of Fives. 6. The Exposition of Sixes 12. Six individuals – (1) Some individual himself fully awakens to the truths in teachings unheard before, and there attains omniscience and mastery in the powers. Some individual himself fully awakens to the truths in teachings unheard before, but does not attain omniscience there, nor mastery in the powers... The lion-like state. Some individual, in teachings unheard before, does not himself fully comprehend the truths, and in this very life becomes an ender of suffering, and attains the perfection of a disciple. Some individual, in teachings unheard before, does not himself fully comprehend the truths, and does not in this very life become an ender of suffering, is a Non-returner, not returning to this state. The Sixes. 7. The Section on Sevens 13. Seven individuals – (1) Seven individuals like water. One plunged once remains plunged. One emerges and plunges. One emerges and stands. One emerges and sees and looks around. One emerges and swims across. One emerges and reaches the firm ground. One emerges, is crossed over, gone to the far shore, stands on dry land, a brahmin. (2) Liberated in both ways, liberated by wisdom, body-witness, attained to view, liberated by faith, follower of the Dhamma, follower of faith. The Sevens. 8. The Section on Eights 14. Nine individuals – (1) A Perfectly Self-Awakened One, a Solitary Awakened One, liberated in both ways, liberated by wisdom, body-witness, attained to view, liberated by faith, follower of the Dhamma, follower of faith.
