What then is the precept of abstinence from killing living beings? When a wholesome consciousness of the sense-sphere has arisen, accompanied by joy, associated with knowledge, with prompting; and similarly for all eight types of sense-sphere wholesome consciousness (with joy or equanimity, associated or dissociated with knowledge, prompted or unprompted); inferior, medium, superior; dominated by desire, by energy, by consciousness; or dominated by desire, inferior, medium, superior; or dominated by energy, inferior, medium, superior; or dominated by consciousness, inferior, medium, superior – for one who is abstaining from killing living beings, that cessation, abstinence, complete refraining, abstention from killing living beings, non-doing, non-action, non-transgression, non-overstepping of the boundary, breaking of the bridge at that time – this is called "the precept of abstinence from killing living beings." When one develops the path to rebirth in the form realm... develops the path to rebirth in the formless realm... develops supramundane jhāna, leading to liberation, leading to the fading away (of defilements), for the abandonment of wrong views, for the attainment of the first stage, quite secluded from sensual pleasures... enters and dwells in the first jhāna, with painful practice and slow insight, at that time there is contact... there is non-distraction. They are not to be abandoned by insight nor by development, they are not whose roots are to be abandoned by insight nor by development, they lead to accumulation, they are neither trainees nor perfected ones, they are limited, they have limited objects, they are middling, they are undetermined, it cannot be said that they are objects of the path, nor causes of the path, nor dominant factors of the path. They may be arisen, they may be unarisen, it cannot be said that they are arising. They may be past, they may be future, they may be present, they have present objects. They may be internal, they may be external, they may be internal and external, they have external objects. They are invisible and unresisting. 2. Dyad. 717. They are not roots, but rooted, associated with roots. It cannot be said: "They are both roots and rooted," but they are rooted and not roots. It cannot be said: "They are both roots and associated with roots," but they are associated with roots and not roots. They are not roots, but rooted, with conditions, conditioned, invisible, unresisting, formless, mundane, knowable by some, unknowable by some. They are not taints, but tainted, disassociated from taints. It cannot be said: "They are both taints and tainted," but they are tainted and not taints. It cannot be said: "They are both taints and associated with taints," nor "They are associated with taints and not taints." Disassociated from taints, they are tainted, not fetters… Not...etc... Not fetters...etc... Not floods...etc... Not yokes...etc... Not hindrances...etc... Not clingings...etc... With object, Not consciousness, Mental concomitants, Associated with consciousness, Conjoined with consciousness, Arisen from consciousness, Co-existent with consciousness, Following consciousness, Conjoined with and arisen from consciousness, Conjoined with, arisen from, and co-existent with consciousness, Conjoined with, arisen from, and following consciousness, External, Not clinging, Not clung to, Not clingings...etc... Not defilements.
